The name “Strath” means land hollowed out by a river, and it came from my great-great grandmother’s maiden name, Strathdee (land hollowed out by the River Dee, which is in the Highlands in Scotland, west of Aberdeen and Dunnottar Castle).
I could not resist taking my Zorki 4 when i went for a trip to Langollen with a friends a few months ago. I could go back with any number of cameras and be inspired. It is a truly beautiful part of the world.
Left for Edinburg today, stopping at the pretty Potarch Bridge (over River Dee, completed 1813) for photos. The bridge is famous for strongman Donald Dinnie who carried the 332 kg Dinnie Stones across. After that we made our way to Roslyn Chapel for a visit. It is an amazing 15th century building with many intricate carvings, carved pillars and stone roof. The Victorians renovated the Chapel after it was abandoned for centuries, but we thought the two styles together was a bit jarring. Dan Brown’s “The DaVinci Code” generated a huge popularity for the Chapel that’s still seen today. We then drove to Lasswade, checked into the Laird and Dog Inn and had a final pub dinner there- haddock, scampi, chips and cask ale, of course!
