Spoilers for River and the Sky Excerpt! (Which can be found here)
It makes literally no sense to me why Squirrelflight, Sparkpelt, and Finchflight disapprove so adamantly of Nightheart changing his name when it was BRAMBLESTAR who CHOSE THE NAME. Yes, Flamepaw asked to have a more fitting name than Flameheart, but it was Bramblestar who let it happen. Nightheart didn’t even suggest the night prefix. Shouldn’t at least some of the ridicule who named him? This book is ridiculous.
And let’s talk about how ridiculous this ridicule is in the first place! I do not remember what Sparkpelt was like in her previous appearances, but in this arc, she has clearly been established with the motivation of trying to develop a good relationship with her son. Considering this, It makes no sense for Sparkpelt to be outraged with Nightheart’s supposed disrespect of his family if what she wants is to become closer with him! Does she not see how backwards of an approach that is?
The only thing I think this could be implying is that Sparkpelt cares more about upholding Firestar’s legacy than her own son, which I just don’t believe, no matter how much of a angsty teenager he is. She even calls him stupid in front of the whole Clan. She didn’t seem like the kind of parent to punish him like this.
Tumblr media
It doesn’t make sense for Squirrelflight to be mad either. Her entire portrayal in A Starless Clan has felt sort of off to me. When was she such a hard ass? Check this out.
Tumblr media
This passage just reeks of an irrational, emotional woman having to be put in her place by her husband. Her husband being BRAMBLESTAR by the way. One of the most emotional and irrational cats of all time. I know Flamepaw understands why she’s angry, but she’s still in the wrong.
And it makes even less sense for Finchflight considering she SUPPORTED Nightheart’s decision to have a different name. No reason is given for her change in opinion.
Tumblr media
I know we are supposed to sympathize with Nightheart, but if the only way the writers can think to make him sympathetic is to make other cats unreasonably illogical, then that is just bad writing. You have a plot beat you need to hit, okay, but could you come up with a better way?
Sorry for the long post, I have a lot of feelings.

How exactly is moving a really heavy branch supposed to show that Fringewhisker will be a good ShadowClan warrior? I guess it shows that she’ll be a strong warrior, but how do they know she’ll be loyal, determined, brave….
Flamepaw’s idea about cats who switch Clans being temporarily demoted to apprentice rank is actually a good idea.
After all these years of it being forbidden to take a mate in another Clan - it’s the first rule in the warrior code - it seems too easy, now.

So I was looking through the Minor Characters of River, and....
Tumblr media
This is the spirit that promises Mistystar is safe. Presumably the spirit that came to pick her up.
Tumblr media
I started wondering who this was, since it seems like we will never know. I looked through cats close to Mistystar to see if anyone had green eyes. I looked through all her relatives, even her mentor and 2 dead apprentices, no one had bright green eyes.
Perchkit has either blue or green eyes, but they aren't described as bright. Crookedstar has green eyes as well, but again, not bright.
You know whose are bright green?

I have a really bad feeling that Moonpaw is the kid of Night and Sun. There are no pregnant she cats rn and the name would align the sky theme of their names. Not to mention the ENTIRE CHAPTER where Sun and Night just talked about having babies before Breezey-P told them to cut it out.
I don't really enjoy NightSun, but it's not something that I hate either. So I wouldn't mind if they had kits at some point. I'd prefer they didn't since Nightheart is so young and the Clan is SO bloated, but... meh.
Plus, Sun and Night having a kid named Moon is, admittedly, super cute lmao. I will be charitable if an idea makes me smile.
What would bug me more is that we're stuck in ThunderClan again. I'm so very tired of being forced to split the POV between the plot and ThunderClan's Contractually Obligated Screentime.
I know we already got our lucky break with an all female POV cast (so it seems) but MAYBE we can double up with our first arc without a ThunderClan perspective too.

The bit about Frostpaw receiving a vision to save WindClan's nursery is actually one of the best plot points in the book. That's solid and has some really nice character moments.
Frostpaw getting this vision solidifies WindClan's support of her. Good way to move the plot along and an actually good move on StarClan's part.
The unlikeliness of the one nearby tree falling adds to that. I was iffy when I first heard the idea, but it was executed well!
Whistlepaw in general. Her bond to Frostpaw is fantastic, the characterization of her being so self-sacrificing she got injured to save her sister is amazing
"It was nothing." "IT WAS EVERYTHING!" is going to be a breakout line from this book and it deserves it.
I liked how the Clan admits to not believing the vision at first... until the thunder started rolling in. THEN they were like "well uh. C. Couldnt hurt to take preemptive measures" Lmao
Frostpaw getting a glimpse of RiverClan territory across the border is delicious. I like her being homesick-- tho I am still wary that she'll forgive the people too quickly.
One thing I'd change; I'd have Harestar muse "why did Kestrelflight not receive the vision..." and Kestrelflight stand up, bravely, and answer, "I had a lesson to learn. The branch, the storm, and Frostpaw herself were an omen meant for me-- that I must trust her."
Like, really drive home his devotion to StarClan and make his faith look so solid it's almost self-punishing. Let them be a little afraid of StarClan's wrath, even if it isn't actually because the ancestors are furious, y'know?

it was certainly a choice for warrior cats to put a fan's cat in the book and then have his backstory be that his owners put him in a bag and threw him in the river as a kitten

A starless clan Antags, Splashtail, Curlfeather, and Berryfart. I tried my best to make Berry and Curl look like their daughters without changing their canon colors. I did what I wanted with Splashtail though.
