Still alive

The odd thing about Radio Disney is that it was one of several attempts at launching a kid-orientated radio station in America and the most successful one around, but one that lasted longer elsewhere and most especially in Latin America. There are still Radio Disney branded stations in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil as far as I know about those, one of them got me into things like Felix Jaehn and Regard in a way.

But it's also the place to relive those awkward teenage years of mine like Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Rasmus and Linkin Park, I never got around to listen to the US version of Radio Disney. The one that got other RD branded stations into being, but I suppose it too lead people into discovering certain musicians and bands to their likings. From my listening experience, it's the place where I first listened to the likes of Lizzo, Maneskin and Olivia Rodrigo.

Funny enough, both Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo are the two most recent musicians that I know of to get their start on the Disney Channel, but since their songs get played on Radio Disney that Disney's practically inescapable. Same goes for alumni like Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus. I don't listen to it as much as I did early on last year, that's been occupied by things like Radio Maria, Hope FM, Citi FM and Energy FM.

One of them got me into listening to radio sermons a lot, as well as trying out other radio stations when it doesn't broadcast those. But it was the first radio station that I listened to often whenever RJFM signs off every 2 in the morning, that station got me addicted to the radio a lot. But with it signing off every 2 AM is a blessing in disguise because I can finally listen to other stations. So it's quite a ride going back to listening to other stations, well gradually after listening to RJFM almost exclusively throughout much of 2022.

Ang Parokya ni Edgar ay isang bandang Pilipino na binuo noong 1993 ng isang grupo ng mga mag-aaral sa kolehiyo. Ang banda ay sikat at pinakapinipuri sa mga orihinal nitong rock novelty na kanta at kadalasang satirical cover ng mga sikat na kanta. Ang banda ay nalampasan na ang mga genre ng musika, iba't ibang istilo mula sa isang kanta patungo sa isa pa - alternatibong rock hanggang pop rock, funk hanggang rapcore, at iba pa - habang nagbibigay ng kaluwagan sa komiks sa kanilang mga tagapakinig. Sa kabila ng pagkakaroon ng "Edgar" sa pangalan ng banda, wala sa mga miyembro ang pumunta dito. Pinangalanan ang kanilang sarili bilang Comic Relief, ang banda ay orihinal na binubuo ng tatlong bokalista - sina Chito Miranda, Jeric Estaco, at Vinci Montaner, at dalawang gitarista - sina Miko Yap at Gab Chee Kee. Regular silang naglalaro sa mga sesyon ng jam pagkatapos ng klase, bago magsagawa ng opening number para sa isang Eraserheads concert. Ito ang nagsilbing break nila sa local music scene at nag-udyok sa kanila na magdagdag ng drummer at bassist – sina Dindin Moreno at Buwi Meneses, ayon sa pagkakabanggit. Ang parehong pagganap ay minarkahan din ang pagpapalit ng pangalan ng banda sa Parokya ni Edgar ang ama ng fictional hero ni Jose Rizal na si Crisostomo Ibarra (sa nobelang Noli Me Tangere).

Ang Silent Sanctuary ay nabuo noong 2001 kasama ang tatlong founding member na sina Norman Dellosa (ang vocalist at gitarista), Paolo Legaspi (bass guitarist at backing vocals), at Allen Calixto (drummer). Habang lumalaki sila bilang isang banda, sinimulan nilang paghaluin ang kanilang musika sa mga klasikal na instrumento upang makagawa ng kakaibang tunog, idinagdag ang kanilang pang-apat na miyembro, si Anjo Inacay (isang cellist) sa kanilang banda. Noong 2002 sila ay hiniling na mag-guest sa isang palabas sa TV kung saan ang isang lalaki na tinatawag na Jett Ramirez ay hiniling na gumawa ng mga string arrangement para sa banda. Pagkatapos noon ay hiniling na sumali sa banda sina Jett at Chino David (parehong violinist). This band Ang Band na ito ay isang indie pop rock band na nakabase sa Las Piñas, Pilipinas. Kilala sila sa kanilang sleeper hit single na "Kahit Ayaw Mo Na." Ang opisyal na music video para sa kanta ay umabot sa 22 milyong view, at ang opisyal na lyric video ay umabot sa 6.5 milyong view.

Ang Eraserheads ay nabuo noong 1989 ng apat na estudyante mula sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Diliman, na kinuha ang pangalan nito pagkatapos ng pelikulang David Lynch na Eraserhead. Ang orihinal na lineup ay binubuo ng ely buendia sa vocals at rhythm guitar, Raimund Marasigan sa drums, Marcus Adoro sa lead guitar at Buddy Zabala sa bass. Regular na gumanap ang grupo sa mga campus gig at sa Club Dredd sa Timog Avenue, Quezon City, Metro Manila, isang hindi na gumaganang club na sikat noong dekada '90 na nagsilbing breeding ground para sa maraming Filipino Alternative Rock acts. Ang grupo ay nagsumite ng isang demo sa RJFM, ngunit agad na tinanggihan dahil ang kanilang musika ay hindi akma sa klasikong pop-rock na format ng istasyon. Buti na lang at inagaw sila ng BMG Records-Pilipinas at inilabas ang kanilang debut affort na "ultraelectromagneticpop" sa ilalim ng kanilang bagong nabuong label na "Musiko". Ang kanilang debut album ay pangunahing binubuo ng ska-tinged pop hooks na inilatag sa isang tradisyonal na pundasyon ng guitar-bass-drums. Ang kaakit-akit na melodies at witty ni Buendia, kung minsan, ang mapang-uyam na lyrics ay nakatulong sa pagpapasigla ng tagumpay ng album.

Ang Callalily ay isang pop rock band mula sa Pilipinas na nabuo noong 2005. Ang banda ay kasalukuyang binubuo nina Kean Cipriano, Aaron Ricafrente, Lem Belaro, Nathan Reyes, at Brylle Balbuena. Kabilang sa mga kilalang dating miyembro sina Tatsi Jamnague at Alden Acosta.

1043 FM2 at 2: Celebrating Two Years of Mega Manila's Hitback Music Nation

It's been two years since Philippine Broadcasting Service launched FM2 at 104.3 MHz the Number 1 upscale FM Station in Mega Manila. Here's how FM2 Started.

Beginnings

On July 2016, Bong Aportadera known as "Sonny B" resigned from Tiger22 Media Corporation, including his station 99.5 Play FM along with Carlo Villo known as "Carlo Jose". Then, PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar appointed Aportadera as Director General of Philippine Broadcasting Service.

A month later on August 2016, Carlo Jose reunites with former Play FM DJ Aportadera as the Deputy Director and the head of the PBS FM Division. Aside of this, he also serves as the program director of 104.3 FM and 87.5 FM.

In late-2016, PBS announced that Business Radio will have its name change. First announced as "Radio 2", it was later changed to FM2 to avoid confusion with BBC Radio 2 in the United Kingdom, with the launch date set on February 2, 2017.

On January 15, 2017, Business Radio quietly signed off for the last time without any formal sign off and it was off the air for more than a week due to technical adjustments.

On January 24, 2017, the station went on air for test broadcast playing the ‘80s and ‘90s music, a 3-song minimix along with pre-recorded teasers carrying the "New Republic" tagline. Sonny B, Carlo José and George Boone had their warm-up 3 days after its test broadcast.

FM2 is Born

On February 2, 2017 past 5:30 AM during Sign On time, It aired a 90s Version of Lupang Hinirang (by Koro Pilipino) then, an updated Sign On-notice by Sonny B replacing Bon Vibar during Business Radio era.

George Boone started the inaugural broadcast at 6am with Huey Lewis & The News’ Do You Believe In Love. He has a great music selection, with songs heard on RT & Kiss before. He used to host Fresh during Weekday mornings. Fresh played a mix of retro music and hot hits, which is similar to Kool 106. Every 55th minute of every hour in the morning, Grace (newscaster of Zoo 101.9) brings the latest news through Live @ 55. Aside of Grace, It added more newscasters Shay, Claudine & Anjanette.

At 9am, Bob Novales went on air, using his old name The Bug. According to him, he’s known and unknown as the insect on our ear. He used to host Perk Avenue during Weekday afternoons.

Jun Sta. Ana took over this high noon. He used to host Morning Grooves during Weekday mornings. Some of the songs played that morning were played again in his program. Unlike the other DJs, Jun didn’t talk that much.

Since 3pm, FM2 played only automated music for the rest of  the day. Sonny B. supposedly to go on board but he was in Baguio with the PCOO officials. The BR mainstays reigned FM2’s 1st day of broadcast.

The following day, Monica went on air come 4pm. She was supposed to board an hour earlier. She didn’t talk that much, just like Jun Sta. Ana. Since then, Monica can be heard from 3-6 PM.

Sonny B. went on air, this time calling himself Sonny. He was the only DJ on board at that day. Unlike during the time FM2 was on test broadcast, his voice was now deeper, probably like the time during his stint with K-Lite.

Yesterday was the day all the 6 DJs went on board. And come 9am, Carlo Jose went on board. His playlist is similar to Friday Madness of Magic 89.9, with him boarding on this day.

Also two more DJ from the defunct 99.5 RT joined the FM2 roster between February and April 2017, North Andrew and Jeremiah Junior with their shows, The North Andrew Show and Jeremiah Junior Plays, respectively.

There three FM2 music segments every hour namely, Double Play, Super Sweep and OPM Push. Double Play plays two songs from one artists, Super Sweep plays three songs in a mix and OPM Push, It plays two OPM songs from various artists.

Along the early months (February-June 2017) of FM2, There were three stations when it faced competition with Retro 105.9 DCG FM, which the latter claimed to be "Mega Manila's First and Only Real Retro Station", 100.3 RJFM and 103.5 K-Lite which played 90s during Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Weekends and Past Forward during Wednesdays.

On July 2017, FM2 gets a fourth competitor when Aliw Broadcasting Corporation's 97.9 Home Radio - "The Home of The Millennials" became 979 Home Radio - "It Feels Good to be Home" as a retro-leaning Easy Listening Station with "Emotions in Motion", Plays the 80s and 90s love songs and Sunday All Day Classics plays the 70s to 80s Love Songs. Also George Boone resigned from the station.

In late 2017, FM2 gets another DJ from the already declining Retro 1059, Joey Pizza he can now be heard during Saturdays 3-6PM. Also, for the first time in the history of government radio, 1043 FM2 was ranked by Nielsen as the #1 station in the Niche (A, B, and upper C) market displacing Retro 1059 which continued to this day.

On December 2017, PBS retired its old callsign DWBR in favor of DWFT as it appeared on its website and now being used on sign-on and sign-off notices. The said callsign change is made to reflect the new branding, serving as complement to the newly launched sister station 875 FM1.

During the first months of 2017, Sonny B and Carlo Jose were the voiceovers of FM2. But since December 2017, Carlo Jose is now the official main voiceover of FM2.

Claudine, one of the initial lineup of newscasters became a DJ and was replaced by Carissa from Play FM. Also George joined the FM2 DJ lineup after leaving 103.5 K-Lite.

During Fridays, FM2 has two special shows namely, Friday 24K and Dance Republic. Friday 24K plays 80s-only playlist from 6 AM to 6PM then Dance Republic plays 80s to 90s Dance Mixes from 6 PM to sign off at Midnight.

During Sundays, FM2 airs Nicest of the 90s, which plays music from the 90s. It’s named after the slogan of Magic’s defunct all-90s program Saturday Slam.

There are three soft music specials heard on FM2:

Rhythm N' Booze - premiered in 2018, plays soul, R&B, funk & jazz facing competition with 105.1 Crossover

Sunday Suave - which airs easy listening music from the 70s to the 90s. Which will face competition with 979 Home Radio and 96.3 Easy Rock (formerly WRocK Manila)

Decompression Session - aired during Weeknights 9 PM to Sign off at Midnight, plays easy listening songs without DJs. Like Sunday Suave, It will also face competition with 979 Home Radio and 96.3 Easy Rock (formerly WRocK Manila)

In Boracay, FM2 can be heard on 106.1 MHz.

Although FM2 is Manila-only station, FM2 can be expanded throughout the Philippines just like FM1 did to Davao. PBS should utilize unified programming of FM2 Nationwide will be from Manila similar to ABS-CBN's My Only Radio Nationwide.

Most people opted not to use cellular data to avoid higher cellphone bills. So, Mr. Aportadera should open the FM2 and FM1 textline to text requesting a song and shoutouts.

In some areas, PBS/BBS needs to relocate the main transmitter site from Visayas Ave., Quezon City to Antipolo, Rizal to strengthen the radio signal and add relay transmitters along Pangasinan, La Union, Pampanga, CALABARZON, Bicol Region and other areas in the Philippines in order to reach the oldies music to the Philippines.

Depending on the funding from the General Appropriations Act (Annual National Budget) and sales from blocktimers and advertisers, FM2 can air 24/7 signing off on Monday Midnight. In order for FM2 to become the #1 FM Station in the Philippines dethroning ABS-CBN's MOR, MBC's Love Radio, RMN's iFM and Bombo Radyo's Star FM.

Mega Manila FM Stations in 2020

Last August 2, 2019, when PBS replaced Friday 24K with Friday Y2K on 104.3 FM2 (read as 1043 FM2) to cater younger audience. This move was done by Bong Aportadera and Carlo Jose. The days after, 2000′s songs were heard on FM2 on a more frequent basis. But it may seem strange when their Sunday counterpart on FM1 continued its tradition of playing 2000′s hits.

So the radio stations deserve a comeback and reformat the current ones.

1.) 99.5 RT

From 1976-2006 and again from 2008-2012, 99.5 RT was the music authority with an innovative playlist of 24K Friday where they played the gold standards of music of the 70s to 90s played by the best DJs.

If Trans-Radio Broadcasting Corporation (owner of DZIQ Radyo Inquirer) buys back DWRT 99.5 FM from the Vera's Tiger22, it will revert to 99.5 RT as a classic hits station to preserve its 70s to 90s playlist.

The current Play FM will move to 89.9 HD2 while Magic 89.9 will be on 89.9 HD1

2.) 96.3 WRocK

From 1988 to 2009, WRocK claims to be "The Philippines Original Lite Rock Radio" (Which Mellow Touch is the true original easy listening radio) It competed with Mellow Touch 94.7, 979 Home Radio and 102.7 WSM The Gentle Wind (now 102.7 Star FM) until 1994.

Due to the unsatisfactory performance of 96.3 Easy Rock due to ads promoted by ACS Manufacturing Corporation and adding pop songs, listeners switched to Home Radio while WRocK fans listened to WRocK Cebu.

If Exodus Broadcasting Company buys 96.3 FM from Elizalde's Manila Broadcasting Company, it will revert back from Easy Rock to WRocK and return it's lost glory when it was still owned by ACWS-UBN of the Hodreal family and its playlists will play easy listening hits from the 80s to 90s with Friday Classics playing the 70s.

Easy Rock might end up 101.1 FM currently occupied by Yes! The Best (which may move to 90.7 HD2) which may compete with 96.3 WRocK.

3.) 979 Home Radio

Known as the easy listening authority following the demise of Mellow Touch 94.7 and 96.3 WRocK Manila, Home Radio still "Feels Good to be Home" despite its provincial stations added DWIZ-related programs like Karambola, Pangga Ruth Abao, etc.

When WRocK and Mellow Touch returns to Manila airwaves, Home Radio needs a reformat playing 2000s and 2010s easy listening songs. Whil Sunday All-Day Classics will play 80s to 90s songs. While its provincial stations will integrate with Manila station in terms of the playlists removing DWIZ programs.

4.) 105.9 FM

The music format was in trouble during Like FM which lasted for a year under Bright Star Broadcasting Corporation.

The station may be either sold to or partnered with Viva Live, Inc. and reformat it to OPM as Halo-Halo Radio 105.9 Manila competing with Pinas FM 95.5 (which is majority owned by INC members and is under the church’ for profit broadcast network Eagle Broadcasting Corporation) and Wish 1075 (affiliated with INC’s archrival Members Church of God International).

5.) MemoRieS FM 91.5

If the Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) acquired Primax Broadcasting Network, Inc. then the frequency 91.5 FM from Mabuhay Broadcasting System, Inc., will be the flagship station of IBC since the demise of 89 DMZ in 2001.

The station will play classic hits but with a wider range from 60s to 2000s Music but will go head to head with 100.3 RJFM.

6.) 103.5 K-Lite

K-Lite's current iteration stayed for 6 years playing "The Hits of the 90s and 2K, Today" however due to the impending return of 99.5 RT, possible launch of MemoRieS FM Manila and FM2's reformat, K-Lite might play 2000s to 2010s Hits, while Past Forward will play only 90s songs every Wednesdays.

The Story of RJ100′s Christmas Special

In the early 2000's, RJ100 (fresh from its reinstatement in the classic hits format) launched 48 Hours of Christmas, which is a 2-day Christmas special on Dec. 24-25. It also has segments including 'Christmas Around the World' and 'The Story of Christmas' on top of the Christmas songs then and now. As feedbacks from listeners poured in each year and even requesting for a longer special.

On December 21, 2013 (during the Golden anniversary of DZRJ), RJ100 FM relaunched as 100.3 Hours of Christmas, which is by far the longest Christmas special on Philippine FM Radio history (it even beat Radio High 105.9's 105.9 Hours of Christmas which lasted from 2011-2013; prior to RJ100's Christmas special relaunch in 2013).

The special begins on Dec. 21 at 7:42pm until 11:59pm of Dec. 25. Each year, RJ100 never signed off once a year for the special prior to the weekly maintenance sign-off every Monday from 12:01am to 4:55am, except in 2015 when the special began on Monday of Dec. 21, and in 2016 when the special ended Christmas Day Sunday just before the station maintenance sign-off early morning of Monday the 26th of December.

The segments in the special were: (those two below were lifted from ‘48 Hours of Christmas’ which carried over to the present special) -Christmas Around the World, featuring various Christmas traditions in each country -The Story of Christmas, a featurette on the Christmas origins -Christmas Song feature by Nadine (formerly Kaila) tackling a Christmas song and its story, versions, and the song's background.

(This year’s 100.3 Hours of Christmas airs this Friday, Dec. 21 at 7:42pm until 11:59pm of Tuesday, Christmas Day. It will be the 5th year to air this one-of-a-kind special. This special is presented by: New Zealand Creamery, Inc. and Columbia International Food products, Inc.) 

This special airs yearly on 10 RJFM Stations Nationwide: 100.3 in Mega Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao; 96.5 Tuguegarao; 91.1 Baguio; 91.1 in Puerto Princesa, Palawan; 99.9 Bacolod; 98.3 Iloilo; 88.5 Cagayan De Oro; and 88.7 Iligan. Also heard globally via eradioportal.com.
