Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (JPCP). Jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP) contain enough joints to control the location of all the expected natural cracks. All necessary cracking occurs at joints and not elsewhere in the slabs. JPCP does not contain any steel reinforcement. However, there may be load transfer devices (e.g., dowel bars) at transverse joints and deformed steel bars (e.g., tiebars) at longitudinal joints. The spacing between transverse joints is typically between 12 (3.7) and 15 ft (4.5 m) for slabs 7-12 in. (175-300 mm) thick. What is the difference between tie bars and dowel bars in concrete carriageway? Tie bars are deformed rebars or connectors used for holding faces of rigid slabs in contact to maintain aggregate interlock. Tie bars are not load transferring device. For instance, tie bars are used in longitudinal joints in concrete pavement. Dowel bars are smooth round bars which mainly serve as load transfer device across concrete joints. They are placed across transverse joints of concrete pavement to allow movement to take place. Where movement is purposely designed for longitudinal joints, dowel bars can be adopted. Octávio Frias de Oliveira Bridge The Octavio Frias de Oliveira bridge, commonly known as "Ponte Estaiada", is a cable-stayed bridge in São Paulo, Brazil over the Pinheiros River, opened in May 2008. Slauerhoff Bridge. The Slauerhoffbrug (English: Slauerhoff Bridge) is a fully automatic bascule bridge (aka tail bridge) in the city of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. The bridge uses two arms to swing a section of road in and out of place. The deck is 15 m by 15 m. It is painted in yellow and blue, representative of Leeuwarden's flag and seal. This movable bridge is also known as the “Slauerhoffbrug ‘Flying’ Drawbridge”. One of the main designers is Emile Asari. A tail bridge can quickly and efficiently be raised and lowered from one pylon (instead of hinges). This quickly allows water traffic to pass while only briefly blocking road traffic.
