#57 - 1974/4: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom

The sleeve: there are two different covers for the album, both taking inspiration from the literal meaning of the title (showing underwater/bottom of the sea scenes). The original is a pencil drawing in a style I'm not a big fan of. The later version is bit more interesting. Good fonts on both.

Had I heard this before: I was unaware of its very existence.

Unsurprisingly, this album consisting of 6 six-and-a-half-minute freeform jazzy prog rock explorations, put together by Wyatt with Mike Oldfield and with the drummer of Pink Floyd producing, fails to do much for me. I find listening to it a frustrating experience, simultaneously tedious and annoying. Worst offender is probably "Alifib", with its continued refrain of "Alifi my larder" (occasionally preceded by such insightful thoughts as "Hellyplop and finger hole / Not a wossit buddy, see", and similar imitations of Lewis Carroll poems by a not very intelligent child). By far the most engaging track is closer "Little Red Robin Hood Hit the Road" - especially the second half, where Ivor Cutler plays some nice baritone concertina and speak-sings in a way that splits the difference between reciting Scottish poetry and Jamaican toasting.
