Shark fishing is illegal in the state as of January 1st. The State of Hawaii’s Division of Aquatic Resources has announced that shark fishing is officially banned, thanks to a bill passed in 2021 by the State legislature. Act 51 makes it illegal to contain, entangle, or kill all shark species in state marine waters. In 2010, Hawaii became the first U.S. state to ban the possession, sale, trade, and distribution of shark fins. A shout out to @senatordonovandelacruz who led the initiative and @govhawaii David Ige who signed the new law into effect. This bill will help protect all sharks from being fished and finned in state marine waters. This law is aimed to protect young shark species at risk of being overfished. The Division of Aquatic Resources Administrator, Brian Neilson, said in a statement, “Our Department is well aware of how important sharks are to maintain healthy marine ecosystems. And we recognize their importance for native Hawaiian cultural practices and beliefs.” To help integrate this new law, the DNLR may implement specific regulations such as “ensuring that the incidental capture and release of sharks while targeting other species is not a violation; preventing the wanton waste of sharks; and limiting gear such as gill nets, in areas identified as shark nursery habitats.” Anyone caught breaking the law will be subject to a misdemeanour accompanied by a hefty fine. Shark squalene, found in the livers of sharks, can be replaced with vegetable alternatives. Shark numbers are already at risk, and our planet would not be able to sustain the demand to vaccinate the world. We need enough sharks to vaccinate 7 billion people on the planet, with 2 doses each. A limited number of sharks means limited vaccinations, which will most likely leave out people in low-income communities, often people of color. Please sign the petition to replace shark squalene with vegetable alternates through the test stages. We need to be able to vaccinate and eradicate this terrible virus across the world, not just for those who can afford it. The sharks that are targeted are already vulnerable; some are even on the endangered species lists. DAKUWAQA PROJECT

During his too-short life, filmmaker Rob Stewart (1979–2017) dedicated himself and his art to waking up humans to the environment beneath the waves and the risks of our exploitation of sharks. In addition to his award-winning full-length documentaries Stewart founded two organizations, United Conservationists and Fin Free. Ocean conservation organization @PangeaSeed Foundation launched its @SeaWalls_ program to harness the power of art and since 2014 has created 350 murals. In 2018 it created the @Dakuwaqa.Project to carry on Rob Stewart’s legacy and one year after Stewart’s death street art icon Tristan Eaton signed on to paint the first of at least five murals planned for the year. Venice, California’s @GjelinaRestaurant at Abbot Kinney and Milwood Ave, happily provided the canvas for this tribute.  @tristaneaton/

#Repost from our shark conservationist friends at @hongkongsharkfoundation @download.ins --- Colombian President Ivan Duque Marquez announced a ban on shark fishing in the country’s waters. Although the official legislation has not been passed, this is a huge development in the shark fin trade. Until recently, the country only protected sharks from finning. “Today we have made a government decision, supported and sustained, and that is that any form of shark fishing is prohibited in Colombia, be it industrial or artisanal. And as we know that this has effects on some artisanal fishing sectors, with the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture we will establish compensation measures through a decree to serve this sector, ” said President Marquez. The main driving force behind this ban has been the INVEMAR (Institute for Marine and Coastal Research), with help from @fmalpelo, Biodiversity Conservation Colombia, and the NGO community in Colombia. Colombia is considered one of the most biodiverse countries in the world and is home to 76 shark species out of the 500 identified worldwide. In an effort to help reduce the killing of sharks the Colombian government is trying to curb their part in the international shark fin trade. Minister of the Environment, Carlos Eduardo Correa understands how important sharks are for our ecosystem and biodiversity said “It is a very important decision for the country, because it means taking care of natural resources and our ecosystem.” The president also announced that people in the Caribbean and Colombian Pacific who are affected by the ban will be able to replace their income sourced from shark fishing. They will be entitled to receive payments for environmental services so that they do not lose their means of income. Although the shark fin trade continues across the world, successes like these make a difference.
