Shark fishing is illegal in the state as of January 1st. The State of Hawaii’s Division of Aquatic Resources has announced that shark fishing is officially banned, thanks to a bill passed in 2021 by the State legislature. Act 51 makes it illegal to contain, entangle, or kill all shark species in state marine waters. In 2010, Hawaii became the first U.S. state to ban the possession, sale, trade, and distribution of shark fins. A shout out to @senatordonovandelacruz who led the initiative and @govhawaii David Ige who signed the new law into effect. This bill will help protect all sharks from being fished and finned in state marine waters. This law is aimed to protect young shark species at risk of being overfished. The Division of Aquatic Resources Administrator, Brian Neilson, said in a statement, “Our Department is well aware of how important sharks are to maintain healthy marine ecosystems. And we recognize their importance for native Hawaiian cultural practices and beliefs.” To help integrate this new law, the DNLR may implement specific regulations such as “ensuring that the incidental capture and release of sharks while targeting other species is not a violation; preventing the wanton waste of sharks; and limiting gear such as gill nets, in areas identified as shark nursery habitats.” Anyone caught breaking the law will be subject to a misdemeanour accompanied by a hefty fine. I have been speaking with people about sharks ending up in makeup and a high percentage of them thought that sharks for Squalane/Squalene were taken from bycatch, but this is a false assumption. Three million deep sea sharks are targetted and killed just for their livers each year. These are threatened species and if somehow the livers were taken from sharks in bycatch...it would be better but even then, there's nothing sustainable about killing sharks. · · ❎ Did you know that it takes 6 000 sharks to create one ton of Squalene/Squalane? The global demand for this oil is 1 000 - 2 000 tons per year! Don't be fooled into thinking Squalane is sustainable and plant derived because it is created by using shark liver oil(Squalene). If the sourcing of the Squalane is not revealed then it is shark-derived. Please speak up for sharks!! ❎ · · 33 % of open-water sharks are facing extinction and if we dont change the way we life our life, we could destroy the very existence of an animal we cannot afford to lose. Although the targeted shark fishing remains illegal, the presidential decree from 2007 allows free trade of sharks from accidental by-catch and exportation of shark fins and the comercialitation of the meat. Most of the shark species fished in Ecuadorean waters (tresher shark, hammerhead shark, blue shark and blacktip sharks). Reproducing infrequently (only one pup per year) and reaching maturity slowly (up to fifteen years), it makes very difficult for the shark population to recover from uncontrolled overfishing.
