The Changeling of Westminster: Intro to Dr.Jekyll/Mr.Hyde
Age: 58
Species: Human
Pronouns: He/Him
Description: Jekyll is tall, wears glasses, with dark thinning sideburns, and wide hands. Hyde is short, with long dark brown hair, acid green eyes, bulldog faced, snub nosed, with an underbite. Has long teeth, course, hairy hands, and spindly sharp nailed fingers. Everyone finds him deeply off putting and hates him on sight.
Backstory:
Dr.Henry Jekyll was from a well to do, good Christian upper class medical family. At Oxford he met Ian Griffin, including Hastie Lanyon, Gabriel Utterson, Abraham Van Helsing, Moreau, and Robur. Away from his restrictive home, Jekyll became known for practicing dark magic, heavy drinking, fighting, and beginning a relationship with Ian. On an expedition to the arctic Jekyll and Ian met Victor Frankenstein’s homunculus. Afterwards Jekyll went on the straight an narrow, cutting out his "bad associations", and becoming a respected member of the community. After years of no contact Ian blackmailed him into helping him hide the changeling, Henry, left in place of his nephew. At twelve Henry became Jekyll's apprentice. By then Jekyll had begun cracking under the pressure society and projected his issues onto Henry. Around this time he created the serum that turned him into his alter ego, Edward Hyde. Hyde has no inhibitions, is aggressive, violent, emotionally volatile, opinionated, brutally honest, promiscuous, openly gay, and practices outlawed magic. Jekyll uses Hyde as an excuse to not take responsibility for his actions. As the plot unfolds he turns into Hyde to stalk Henry's activity across London.
On the sliding scale of The Glass Scientists to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, my version of Jekyll and Hyde is somewhere in the middle. He's not a toothless Tumblr sexyman, but he doesn't go as far the Alan Moore version. His repressed traits are a mix of genuinely awful and only evil by Victorian standards. If anything he's more comparable to Clay Puppington from Moral Orel, a repressed, hypocritical and kind of pathetic patriarch who psychologically fucks up the wide eyed hero who idolizes him.

I just read “The Master of the World” partly because of THIS post and I didn’t see any mention of my man Nemo. ☹️ Where was he mentioned? Did I miss something?
However, my personal headcannon is that the unidentified submersible in the ocean was actually The Nautilus rather than The Terror. 😏
I love so much when Monsieur Verne mentions his books in his other books. Captain Hatteras in the Fur Country, Captain Nemo in the Master of the World. This makes me very happy ♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎

I'm trying to get back into Robur the Conqueror (finally) while I’m drawing. Because I've always started it and never finished it. Like so many other things since I became a mum. Well… Sorry Jules, but I feel like I'm reading 20,000 leagues under the sea, but the aliexpress version 😂 I knew it had the very same construction but there isn’t any interesting character for now. Plus it's more than embarrassingly racist 🫠.
I found that Nab, from Mysterious Island, or the Papua naturals from 20,000 Leagues were much more « « « respectfully » » » approached than in Robur. It was the 19th century etc, so admittedly we could have done 10000x better today (ahem…) , but in Robur I … er … anyway. We'll try to finish for general culture but it's boring 🤨

I always see people comparing Robur the Conqueror to Captain Nemo and you know? I can definitely see it premise-wise, but as soon as you look beyond that it makes zero sense whatsoever because their personalities are so drastically different. Because Nemo, at least, has a desire to do good and to help people, (which may or may not be in the most appealing way, but anything works) while Robur, who does have the capacity for good, is more or less defined as a self-destructive, raging narcissist. Critics can scream “Captain Nemo ripoff!” all they want, but it doesn’t change the fact that one of these people would avenge me if I were wronged while the other would say “lmao don’t care” before shoving me off a 7 story building in a fit of rage
#yeah Robur COULD be a genuinely good dude if we weren't so self-absorbed#like dude#if you walk into the meeting of a specific group to blaspheme their ideas and then get mad they become upset#maybe you should consider that YOU are the problem#and the kidnapping was definitely an extreme you should not have gone to#at least Nemo had a valid reason to hold Aronnax & co.#it would be absolutely HILARIOUS if Robur and Nemo were to meet though#oh the comedic potential#robur the conqueror#captain nemo#20000 leagues under the sea#master of the world#jules verne#books#literature#classic lit
