I stuffed yesterday’s wet clothes in my backpack, taped up my blisters, spread Vaseline all over my feet in anticipation of heavy rain, and headed out.
By the end of my walk it has rained for about 20 minutes and I stopped at a café for the heaviest part of it. The Camino delivered. The heaviest of the rain started 30 minutes after arriving at my hostel and continued throughout the evening.
I walked through the Bairrada region, well known for its sparkling wines and dating back to the 10th century. It found a nice restaurant in Águeda, O Tipico, which served Bairrada wines and enjoyed a nice meal with the wine.
I walked with Tina (Slovenia) today. She was walking because she was at a point in her career where she was unsure of her future and what she wanted to do next. The Camino gave her time to think about what mattered to her, in life and at work. We talked a lot about the wars in Yugoslavia, the impact on her family, and why it happened. In her opinion there were unresolved ethnic issues, largely related to religious differences. I couldn’t help but wonder why there are such differences in people's thoughts on: loving others, forgiving others, not being hypocritical, and peace. Thinking about it, it seems that the more we believe in something, the less objective we become, and in turn, less tolerant. I concluded that people should consider travel fanaticism over religious fanaticism (I may be struck by lightning for that statement). The more I spend time with people from around the world, the more we understand each other. Preconceptions and misconceptions are replaced with facts. I’ve continue to see that we all want the same thing: a better life for ourselves, family, and friends. We just need to get to know each other. More tolerance and less bigotry would go a long way.
Before dinner I stopped at a local bar/restaurant, Arco Velho Restaurante. It was full of locals, talking loudly/yelling at each other (something that I have been accused of, on occasion). Prices were reasonable. Wine was served from bottles without labels - a glass, 60 cents.
I stayed at the Residencial Hilario last night. It was clean and basic. The room had about 14 beds. It had cotton sheets and pillow cover but no towels. I asked for breakfast and the host made me a nice to-go breakfast bag with apple juice, two bananas, and a ham & cheese croissant - 3 euros. Perfectly acceptable.
