I’m a little obsessed with Tempest and Rockhoof bonding during that journey they went on together, and with the idea that Sunburst’s type is Big ‘n; Bold, and with the idea that Rockhoof and Tempest both like sweet dorky types, and that through a series of wacky romantic comedy tropes, the three wind up together.

They eventually have one child, Homesteader, a sweet and shy boy whose special talent lies in animal handling--unfortunately, most animals terrify him.

iv recently come to like sunburst and rockhoof! sunburst who is this nerd who insist he was the court wizard of the crystal empire and refuses to admit he was a glorified baby sitter. and rockhoof this GIANT GIANT motherfucker whos a relic who loves to tell stories and all that. sunburst thinks rockhood is giant and handsome and lOVE LOVES LOVES to hear all about his stories, they go to museams and rockhoof tells sunbursts all he knows while they both try not to clusmily knock shit over. rockhoof just seeing sunburst and being like ‘mmm i love this lil wizard man’

Continuing my exploration of the world of egg cookery I set myself the challenge of making both meringue and mayonnaise. The thinking was that two would nicely balance each other out by using the white/yolk and producing something savoury and something sweet. Well that was thinking. The reality was that I attempted mayonnaise 3 times, and failed 3 times. I tried following Delia to the letter (mustard powder, salt, pepper, etc.). I tried taking it back to basics (just yolks and oil). I tried processing a myriad of differing opinions (whisking yolks on their own first, adding salt, holding off on adding the acid) on what should be really quite a simple process, but no matter what I tried I ended up scraping a sticky, sloppy mess into the bin. I am however, not done. Mayonnaise, consider yourself warned – I will conquer you!

What did go rather more successfully was my meringue, although, in full transparency, what you see here is my second attempt. I failed to whip the first batch to the appropriate level (peaks not stiff enough) and added the sugar a little too early (based on advice I might add). The result was a little runny and grainy. I just knew it wasn’t worth the clogging up my oven with it, especially given the all-important cooling (drying) time inherent with meringue making. Second time around however the peaks stood up, the grain of the sugar was much more integrated and the mixture was surprisingly easy to mold and shape onto the baking sheet. Which is probably a good juncture to discuss the shape of my meringue – it’s not good is it? I mean I think I did a pretty good job of photographing it to bring out the best in it, but let’s face it it’s a little pedestrian and the dip is the middle is way too deep. I think I can tame that sticky, foamy goodness and produce something a little more artistic. Next time.

Meringue cooling in the oven turned my attention to a filling, experimenting with Delia’s vanilla mascarpone mix vs. the standard whipped cream; it had merit, but there will be some personal tweaks made if I do it again. For fruit I chose the seasonally sensible pomegranate rather than rely on frozen fruit and created a syrup from pomegranate juice and honey; not bad, could have been reduced a little more and perhaps next time I’ll just use sugar for a cleaner flavour. Then, to top the whole thing off, add some contrasting colour and a little extra crunch, I made some honey salted pistachios, which definitely be being produced again at some point soon.

Finally it came to serving and being the rock ‘n’ roll chef that I am (yeah, right) I packed up all the requite parts of my dessert, boarded the Q train and went in search of a grimy gig venue if Brooklyn. The reason you ask? My friends’ band (Shinobi Ninja) was playing the Knitting Factory to celebrate the release of their new album and the idea of serving it to musicians and hangers on alike seemed much better than sitting at home alone on a Saturday night eating an entire pavlova by myself. I also quite like the juxtaposition of such an effete dessert with the grungy setting. It was all very ‘Let it Bleed’ which seemed appropriate given my mixed culinary performance that day: “You can’t always get what you want …”
