The Dothraki: or why Daenerys must thank the gods for her dragons
Hello Tumblr friends because for the moment it seems that sleep does not want my company I decided to write a little about the Dothraki and in a minor way even on the armies of Essos and why they really make so much shit than any other militire force in the world of GOT and also in real life and why Dany without his dragons would really be in the bitter cocks, as they say in my part.
The Dothraki apparently are a remarkable force: a vast swift cavalry skillful in the struggle, a warlike society that rewards physical strength and an absurd moral in combat. And it is here that we stop because the Dothraki in fact are a military force only apparently remarkable, G.R.R. Martin our favorite shinigami was vaguely inspired by the  Mongols when he created the Dothraki, or at least the popular conception of them.
Tumblr media
Genghis is is disgusted by how you dared to compare his armies with that cluster of idiots.
The dothraki lack the slightest military tactics in addition to frontloading the enemy and hope to kill him, the conception that we have of Dothraki as eldritch abomination derives mainly from their reputation as rapists and slaughterers of unarmed civilians, as I said before the preferred tactics ... that I say the only tactic used by the Dothraki is the frontal charge, for a person passionate about Film would also seem a good idea just think of the charge of the Rohirrim to the fields of Pelenor (okay that Rohirrin are technically heavy cavalry)
Tumblr media
( SOOOOOO COOOOOOL).
or in many others film where the cavalry is sovereign of the battle, in the RL the light cavalry (the type of cavalry that are the  Dothraki) was used to hit the sides of the enemy and / or to chase the forces of the enemy in retreat. This comes from 2 things.
the first is that if you charge a row of spears (spears not even of pikes) with light cavalry you have an excellent chance that the horse will die before you have broken through and/or if you broke throug the leg of your horse will break on the second line of ypur enemy.
the second is that once you get in touch with the enemy you have a bunch of non-cohesive knights who can not maneuver and who will be torn to pieces by the infantry or skirmishers (just think that in the battle of  Gaugamela the Peltasti of Alexander massacred the Persian cavalry with little fatigue).
Right then you will ask me "Luca my adorable calf head, then why are they so feared by everyone in Essos and why the free cities payd them?". The answer is both very simple and very strange, the Dothraki popped out during the hundred years of blood that followed the collapse of Valirya, the people of Essos had by now resigned for centuries that the dragons win stop , and let their military tradition go gradually away, when the dragons disappeared there was hardly anyone who understood something of tactics and the Dothraki could happily rape their way to victory.
In fact, their first defeat arrives in the battle of Qohor by the Unsellied, in this clash we can admire 2 things: first the tenacity of the Unsellied that even though they are hoplites they know how to do their job and keep the line and second it confirms taht  the Dothraki are more stupid of a fly , attacking unsuccessfully  a row of Hoplites until death (literally).
The Free cities pay for the simple fact that a tribute to Dothraki is cheaper than waging war (and for the fact that if you make war there is the possibility that your neighbors invade you as a part of Bravoso and Pentos all the other cities are in a semi-permanent situation of war).
"But then why Robert was afraid if they do shit?" You rightly ask, the answer is simple Robert knows that if 50,000 dothraki disembark they will do one thing  looting and pillagin, this would force the forces loyal to Robert to go behind them while Pro-Targaryen forces of Westeros could gather and strike.
So to finish the Dothraki suck and Dany and also Jon have to thank all the existing Gods that the undead can not create a line of pikes.Jon my friend, a dispassionate council convince Dany to get those idiots off the horses and teach them to fight in line or you will only send troops to the night king.
I will write another piece on the Unsellied and on the "armies" of Essos trying to explain why G.R.R. Martin  must take a military tactical book in hand if he wants to make his world a little more credible (or even a fairly recent game in the Total War series would be an improvement).
Now I try to sleep that it is 5:30 am if you have any questions ask, I'm not a historian but only a fan (obsessed).

appendix blog part last
“listen to ghoul get angry about linguistic diversity”
So the next appendix is E: WRITING AND SPELLING, and idk how much I am going to care about this. I kept accidentally reading the part saying that ‘Bolger’ has a soft G in it, so my instinct is to not read any of this. I NEVER use J sounds if I can help it, even going so far as to mispronounce proper names by reading it as either Y or H. Therefore, I’m not reading this section. But I really do appreciate the subheading ‘S T R E S S’
A sort of interesting thing about Tengwar is that it’s supposed to be not so much an alphabet as a set of signs you can map to whatever sounds you are feeling. They wanted it to be really widely applicable, although it seems like this would be really confusing if the language just, didn’t work at all like Quenya. Also there are 24 letters  arranged as a matrix of 4 series vs 6 grades. Series are where the sound is (labial, dental, et c) and grades are what you are doing (aspirating, stopping, et c). Extremely tidy, just as I would expect of a language system made by Feanaro Finwion. However, also as you would expect of, well, Quendi in general, every single letter has a dumb fanciful name that probably has some deep metaphorical significance.
Can I just say, it’s frankly astonishing that you all wanted to read me blogging about this.
APPENDIX F: LANGUAGES AND PEOPLES
Westron has become the native language of nearly everyone who lives in Arnor/Gondor. Okay, why though? Is it just because Numenoreans Were Here First? They weren’t, there were even plenty of Edain during the second age. Numenoreans just declared themselves rulers and everyone was like “yeah you have good technology and seem to be pretty good at murders” I guess. I dunno it just seems like Tolkien is sacrificing linguistic diversity for convenience within the story and his own weird elitism.
...No, wait a minute, it might be because the total population of Gondorians and former Arnorians is just way bigger than every other population. Not the Rohirrim, who still do have their own native language, but I get the sense that everyone in the north used to be subjects of Arnor and had to learn Westron. Even elves learned it, possibly because Numenoreans were the only humans they cared enough about to talk to. Now it’s a trade language.
The Elves far back in the Elder Days became divided into two main branches: the West-elves (Eldar) and the East-elves. Of the latter kind were most of the elven-folk of Mirkwood and Lórien; but their languages do not appear in this history, in which all the Elvish names and words are of Eldarin form.
Fuck you. No um I’m sure he just had too many languages on his plate already. But!! I hate this weird thing where languages Tolkien personally thinks are superior end up dominating populations, even when it doesn’t make much sense for them to do so! Same thing with Dunedain deciding Sindarin is better than their native language because they are gay for the abstract concept of elves. Nobody does that!! Tolkien paints it as tragic that Gondorians lose Sindarin as a native language! He does not value linguistic diversity for its own sake what kind of linguist is he!!!
Hobbits historically have had the tendency to adopt whatever language the humans nearby are speaking, which is curious given their reputation for being extremely hard for humans to find. Why would they need to use human languages  if they are hiding from humans? I think there ought to be hobbit languages is all. Anyway apparently the last language they used before coming to Arnor was Rohirrin(?)-adjacent; their name, hobbit, comes from the same root as holbytla, hole-builder. Cute!
Says here the ents are so long-winded even Eldar didn’t bother to try to write anything in entish or learn it. Ents talked freely, secure in the knowledge that Eru’s children just didn’t have the patience to snoop. Whereas ents love learning other languages, so they get to snoop on everyone.
The strange words and names that the Hobbits record as used by Treebeard and other Ents are thus Elvish, or fragments of Elf-speech strung together in Ent-fashion. Some are Quenya: as Taurelilómëa-tumbalemorna Tumbaletaerëa Lómëanor, which may be rendered 'Forestmanyshadowed-deepvalleyblack Deepvalleyforested Gloomyland', and by which Treebeard meant, more or less: 'there is a black shadow in the deep dales of the forest'.
This is a fascinating insight into entish grammar. I love the idea of a language whose grammar is “mash some concepts together to create a Feeling about what you are trying to say.” That’s very me. That is how I talk sometimes when I am not very verbal.
The word uruk of the Black Speech was applied as a rule only to the great soldier-orcs that at this time issued from Mordor and Isengard. The lesser kinds were called, especially by the Uruk-hai, snaga 'slave'.
Oh shit I thought Snaga was his name. I feel terrible for him now. Or, like, it was his name and it was the worst name ever.
Next is a note on translation. The best part of the whole appendices is the bit where it says Pippin was addressing Denethor as “thee” the whole time so everyone thought he had a rank equal to the Steward. This is especially silly because presumably he noticed that humans use formal pronouns but just didn’t bother to try to fit in--this implies that he didn’t understand the significance of “you” and just thought it was more or less a direct synonym. I wish Tolkien had written the hobbits using “thou” in the book, although it wouldn’t have had the same connotations to modern audiences I suppose.
The more learned and able among the Hobbits had some knowledge of 'book-language', as it was termed in the Shire; and they were quick to note and adopt the style of those whom they met. It was in any case natural for much-travelled folk to speak more or less after the manner of those among whom they found themselves...
Oho! It’s because he doesn’t study enough and is incautious and carefree. What a lad. Talks then about the Anglicization of Adunaic names to give a feeling of Englishness--archaic English usages, different name endings being masculine of feminine, et c.
In some old families such as the Tooks and the Bolgers, it was the custom to give high-sounding first-names. Since most of these seem to have been drawn from legends of the past, and many while now meaningless to Hobbits closely resembled the names of Men in the Vale of Anduin, or in Dale, or in the Mark, I have turned them into those old names, largely of Frankish and Gothic origin, that are still used by us or are met in our histories. I have thus at any rate preserved the often comic contrast between the first-names and surnames, of which the Hobbits themselves were well aware.
As VV pointed out... It’s Good. I like to imagine Bolgers trying to come up with the sillest given name that just doesn’t go with Bolger at all. Isengrim would have been a good one, I can’t remember what family he was from.
Meriadoc was chosen to fit the fact that this character's shortened name. Kali, meant in the Westron 'jolly, gay', though it was actually an abbreviation of the now unmeaning Buckland name Kalimac.
Yes!! I’m so glad I finally hear what Kali means. I wonder if Tolkien came up with the English name or the Adunaic name first? I’m guessing English, that seems like how he rolls in this series. Aww Sam’s name means “he’s kinda dumb,” in archaic Adunaic. Leave him alone.
Last, here’s the explanation of ‘Brandywine,’ which I like very much in its complicated series of interwoven puns.
The hobbit-names of this river were alterations of the Elvish Baranduin, derived from baran 'golden brown' and duin '(large) river'. Brandywine seemed a natural corruption in modern times. Actually the older hobbit-name was Branda-nîn 'border-water', which would have been more closely rendered by Marchbourn; but by a jest that had become habitual, referring again to its colour, at this time the river was usually called Bralda-hîm 'heady ale'.

So something people need to know about me is that I love HP and Lord of the rings, THEREFEORE, AU + kurtty 15. Love LOTR so much books wise and movies.
Kitty: Who was born into Rohan and trained diligently since age five in an effort to get herself a horse of her own to ride into battle before the coming wars that were on the horizon for the One Ring. Who was separated from her family on the edge of Mirkwood during an especially awful Orc attack when she was thirteen and ran aground Kurt while he was hunting rabbit and elk with the freshly made arrows that seemed out of place because of the double sword set he was also carrying. Who found herself given the strange gift of a freshly trained dragon by the dark-furred southern elves of Mirkwood, once it became obvious to them in her seven year friendship with one of their only real swordsmen, that the rare female Rohirrin was quite special in her ways and would benefit a mount that could take her anywhere–an ally. Who was brave and courageous in the sky when the fight at Helm’s Deep called her into action–and she was pleased to be called once she heard that the elves were called to arms and were helping the Fellowship as best they could; and she was even more fierce during the Battle of Pelennor Fields where she engaged the Nazgul with the assistance of Kurt–taking shots and steady hits to them, but not being able to truly defeat them when that could only be done by the hobbit’s completion of the destruction of the One Ring. Who returned to Mirkwood at Kurt’s behest as the snow began to fall; where she lived at the rest of her days as his wife, and mother to his children; Lockheed, her dragon, carrying their children just as proudly as he did their mother and Kurt making sure that the Rohirrim always knew about their dragon rider.
Kurt: Who was one of the few elves that chose to remain in Mirkwood forests at the onset of the strife that the ring business brought about; able to survive the fierce fights that always came knocking at the door, the risk of being captured and tortured to breed with those hideous Uruk-Hai in an attempt by Saruman to create even more deadly and retched species, the risk of being forgotten altogether. Who, while as accurate and deadly with a bow as any other of the elf-kind, was especially gifted with a set of swords he had found washed up on the riverbank in his youth that he trained with relentlessly, simply because the swords themselves were beautiful and deserved respect. Who met Kitty in a moment of mistaking her for an elk, and immediately decided that this was to be a woman he would likely spend the rest of his (her; she was a human, he had to keep reminding himself) life with, simply based on the fact that she scolded him for, “Confusing a beautiful, powerful young maiden for a future meal! Honestly!” Who fought the entire battle at Helm’s Deep and, when things were at their dreariest and most downtrodden, rain sodden and bleak as his spirits when he had to step over his fallen comrades; he heard Lockheed on the wind before he looked up and saw the most beautiful woman in the world coming down from the peek of the mountain like an avenging god; his spirit soaring and restored in an instant. Who did not, honestly, expect Kitty to return to Mirkwood with him–he was under no illusions that as one of the rarest of rare Rohirrim woman and a war hero to boot, the chances were actually in the negative that his letter would actually get to her without being burnt by some Rohan man that hoped to keep her for continuing a line of strong men–but offered her his warmest coat, his richest meat, his finest wine when she knocked on his door with snow clinging to her windswept hair and rosy cheeks to highlight the smile she returned to him when he practically hauled her into his home.
