A rare English language version of the sit-in arcade game SEGA Sonic Cosmo Fighter has been dumped and released to the public. It's not currently playable, but fans can download the ROM in anticipation of the game being operable on the MAME emulator when it is next updated.

The ROM dump was provided by Twitter user "IAMAMAZING100" (which is, actually, an amazing name), who has reportedly been in possession of a legitimate SEGA Sonic Cosmo Fighter arcade cabinet since June 2021.

While there is currently no way to play the ROM once downloaded, eager Sonic fans have taken to run the file through audio software regardless to see what happens... and surprisingly enough you can hear the voices of Sonic and Eggman as the game runs.

SEGA Sonic Cosmo Fighter was already an incredibly rare piece of Sonic (and arcade) history, due to its extremely limited Japan-only run in the early 90s, but the fact that a legitimate English language version exists has been something of a legendary find. The fact that we have a dump that may soon be playable will go a long way for arcade game preservation efforts.

I don’t post much about my hobby projects bc I don’t think most of my followers would be all that interested in them, but never the less, a ROM hacking project I started late last year hit an important milestone today!

It doesn’t look like much (bc I purposely limited the output) but I’ve reached the point where I can start extracting the game’s script directly from the ROM file, for an eventual translation!

Let me tell you, identifying a little over 700 separate Kanji as a non-Japanese speaker was a trip 😵‍💫

I've been playing Pokemon Stadium on Switch lately, and like people don't like that you can't import Pokemon from gen 1 or 2 but I've been having a lot of fun regardless.

Like growing up, I never had the link cables and I didn't have friends with game boys or Nintendo 64 or whatever, and I feel like a lot of people probably didn't have the equipment to transfer Pokemon to and from Stadium. So I feel a bit better about just engaging with the mechanics as they're presented.

And like that being said - I would LOVE for gen 1 and 2 to come to NSO. Like are you kidding. I can always go for a Yellow or a Crystal playthrough, and the added functionality with the Stadium games would be appreciated. But I still feel that if I was in the position to play Pokemon Stadium as a kid, I wouldn't have all the accessories to transfer shit from Gameboy to N64, and this would probably be the raw gameplay experience I would have.

So that helps a little, even if the NSO experience is flawed. And like I'm just happy to be battling big 3D Pokemon. And Stadium 2 has fuckin JOHTO Pokemon????? I'm really looking forward to playing that when I'm done with the first game.

hey are any of you guys into technology/electronics or software hacking/rom hacking and stuff?

my friend and i are gonna start a project this summer where we are basically disassembling and modifying the code of a tamagotchi and then making a custom shell for it and while so far it seems fairly straightforward. neither of us have much knowledge or experience so if anyone out there would be willing to help answer any questions we have please let me know 👍
