[...] Tom almost didn’t catch the dark-haired, green-eyed man sitting in the passenger seat of the car outside. He only saw him for a moment, but he was gorgeous. Beautiful enough to die for. “Lucius,” he said, breathless. “I think I’m in love.” “Oh no,” Lucius replied. “Not again.”

Three of Trump's rivals for the GOP nomination say they would pardon Trump for his crimes if they get elected president.
The leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination faces 91 criminal charges, nearly half of which are at the federal level. And yet his two main GOP rivals have said they would pardon him if they’re elected. [ ... ] While campaigning in the days leading up to the first votes of 2024’s Republican primary elections, Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley have both signalled they would grant clemency to the former president because it would be in the nation’s “interest” to do so. [ ... ] Republican officials and Mr Trump’s GOP rivals for the 2024 nomination have largely rushed to his defence after his indictments. Vivek Ramaswamy pledged to pardon Mr Trump shortly after he was federally indicted in the Mar-a-Lago case. [ ... ] Pardoning him would merely prove that the US does have “two systems of justice,” GOP rival Chris Christie told supporters in New Hampshire last week. But not the kind that Mr Trump believes. “One for all of us and one for the most powerful,” Mr Christie said. “If we allow that to happen as a country, we would be no better – no better – than a lot of these tin-pot democracies around the world who treat the privileged different than they treat everyday citizens.”
Asa Hutchinson, who is technically still in the race, reasserted that he would not pardon Trump.
Republican Asa Hutchinson won't pardon Trump if he's convicted
So here's the GOP Trump pardon scoreboard...
Tumblr media
It's worth noting that President Gerald Ford gave a full pardon to Richard Nixon a month after he succeeded the disgraced Nixon. The pardon was highly unpopular and was likely a factor in Ford's narrow defeat by Democrat Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election.
Pardons for Trump might play well with the MAGA base but would be much less popular with the broader public.

Remembering Roger Corman 1926-2024
This one hurts! One of the giants of indie film Roger Corman has died at 98. While he might have been known for B movies, his influence is immeasurable to all movies (A-Z).
If there was some sort of an It's a Wonderful Life scenario where we could see what life would be like if Corman hadn't been born, the entire history of film would look very different. As a producer / director / writer, he discovered and gave early career breaks to Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Joe Dante, Ron Howard, Alan Arkush, John Sayles, James Cameron, Gale Ann Hurd and countless others. In 2010 when Corman received an honorary Academy Award, Quentin Tarantino did the tribute. Afterwards QT posed for a photo with many of Corman's proteges and made reference to feeling like he was an honorary member of the Corman Film School!

Demme directing Corman in Silence of the Lambs. The student became the master!
But most notably for me is that he discovered one of my favorite filmmakers of all time Jonathan Demme. Early Corman-produced films that Demme worked on included Angels Hard as They Come, and The Hot Box. Then the first three features Demme directed were for Corman's New World Pictures: Caged Heat, Crazy Mama, and Fighting Mad. Once he moved on to bigger films, Demme never forgot Corman as he cast him in small roles in Swing Shift, The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, The Manchurian Candidate, and Rachel Getting Married. One of the things Demme talked about quite often that Corman taught him was that you need to keep the eye engaged in a film, because if the eye gets bored, the brain (and the viewer) will too, and also that the picture will only be as strong as the hero and antagonist. In 2010 when Demme received an award from Coolidge Corner Theatre, Corman was in attendance and spoke as well. My friend Jake Mulligan taught a class about Corman at the Coolidge a few years ago and had a section about Demme and Corman as well.

Bucket of Blood movie poster
In all of this praise about Corman as a producer and the "Corman Film School" of directors he gave early opportunities to, it's easy to overlook his own directing. My favorite of his own films are the underrated A Bucket of Blood (having a lot to say about beatniks and the art world) and The Little Shop of Horrors (featuring Jack Nicholson in an early role as an eager patient).
In my own directing class in college, my professor would often make reference to Corman, not just the themes and ideas in his films but his approach to low-budget filmmaking. If you've ever seen Corman in an interview you can't help but absorb his bits of wisdom.
I'd highly recommend checking out the 2011 documentary Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel for more about the man himself. I included it in my Best Documentaries of the 2010s list.

Cindy Williams first became interested in acting during high school, where she actually performed with Sally Field. After graduation, she attended L.A. City College where she majored in Theater Arts. After college, she landed her first television roles on Room 222, Nanny and the Professor and Love, American Style. She would go on to co-star with Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss and Harrison Ford in American Graffiti directed by George Lucas, a low-budget film that went on to become a box office smash and film classic.
Cynthia Jane Williams died January 25, 2023 at the age of 75.

Tribute to Roger Corman
Roger Corman passed away recently, at 98. He was a powerhouse of cinema. His own movies, of which he directed more than 50, were all cheap B-movies. The films he produced (nearly 400) were much of the same. Yet, he used his position to give new players a chance to get some experience. Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Peter Bogdanovich, Sylvester Stallone, Robert DeNiro, David Carradine, Peter Fonda, Sandra Bullock, Tommy Lee Jones, Dennis Hopper, Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, Joe Dante, James Cameron and dozens upon dozens of more people got their start with Corman. He also handled distribution for a lot of foreign films that other companies passed on, including work by Kurosawa, Truffeau, Fellini and Ingmar Bergman. It's not a stretch at all to say that the face of cinema would be completely different without him; the last 50 years of movies owes a huge debt to Roger Corman.
If you are going to watch one of his films I'd suggest:
Masque of the Red Death
The Little Shop of Horrors
X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes
A Bucket of Blood
These are all low budget films but they've got fun ideas and are easy to watch. Just a lot of fun.
RIP to a real one.
