How do you tell if a cat is a bengal or a regular tabby?
Rosettes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bengal modifier gene turns the spotted tabby pattern, demonstrated by a Savannah in the top image, into rosettes as demonstrated by the Bengal in the bottom picture.
Bengals are the only rosetted breed.
Tumblr media
You can also find Bengal’s with similar single spotting to other breeds but it isn’t very common because the rosettes are more desirable.
Tumblr media
A Bengsl from Liberty Bengals sporting a single spotted pattern. You can see that the facial structure is still very distinct, though.
Black Rosetted Tabby is by far the most popular color and pattern in the Bengal breed, but it isn’t the only color. You can find self/solid Bengal’s referred to as “melanistic,” but the underlying rosetted pattern is usually still pretty noticeable.
Tumblr media
As demonstrated by this Bengal from Benlaria.
Bengal’s also come in a marbled pattern, which is classic tabby wity the bengal modifier gene.
Tumblr media
Most often the classic tabby patterns forms what is called a “bulls eye,” referring to the blotch in the center surrounded by the thick striping rippling outwards. Demonstrated here on a Kurilian Bobtail.
This is not desireable in the Bengal breed. Although it may occur it is not a trait that breeders try to preserve and is actively being bred away from in the breed.
Tumblr media
Bengal cats also come in point, mink and sepia all referred to as “snow” and charcoal. In snow Bengal’s you can still pretty reliably use the pattern as a guide, it usually shows through pretty distinctly even starting from a young age.
Tumblr media
This Wildrose snow lynx Bengal sports itty bitty baby rosettes.
Charcoal only naturally occurs in the Bengal breed… but has been introduced into other breeds through outcross programs, such as the British Shorthair and Oriental Shorthair. These breeds have wildly different conformation than the Bengal so mistaken identity isn’t likely to be an issue.
Charcoal-like patterns have been documented as naturally occuring in random-bred cats but few and far between and without knowing if it’s actually the same gene responsible or something else is going on.
Tumblr media
And charcoal will still be paired with a tabby pattern so you can still lean on that, as seen on this silver charcoal from Carbon Cat.
Bengal’s only come in black and blue. A small sample of breeders work with chocolate and cinnamon in the breed (as well as their dilutes) and a selection of breeders have begun to introduce red and tortoiseshell into the breed…
But these are rare enough that if you have a cat in one of those colors that doesn’t have a known lineage relating to one of these breeders cats I’m generally pretty comfortable saying you’re not looking at a Bengal.
Bengal Colors and Patterns
Colours and Patterns of the Bengal Cat
Obviously there is more to the breed standard that just coat color and patterns but they have such distinct, unique markings and coloration that for the layperson this is going to be the easiest way to distinguish a Bengal compared to an ordinary type instead of trying to look at facial conformation and such.

Suddenly, I came up with an idea for a new ss au...
Star Spire!
An au based on the stars, of course, and space, but still with candies and sweets... Which made out of stars
And here's some designs for this au!
Pizzelle, Rosette and Marble. Pizzelle came to the star spire to collect stars and candies, and Rosette with Marble are here to help. These three can fly... Just a little bit
Tumblr media
Pizzano and Stinky. Pizzano is here just to mess with Pizzelle and Stinky has no other choice but to follow his boss. These two can't fly, but Stinky made jet boots to solve this problem
Tumblr media
The G and his bouncer rat. Nothing really changed about them, still guarding the boss gates until Pizzelle gives the G money... They also can't fly, but they don't really need that anyway
Tumblr media
Gumbob and Sheriff. How did they get in the spire? Anyway, they're gonna support Pizzelle on her way to the top of the spire. Moral support counts, right? Sheriff can fly a little bit and Gumbob uses jet boots
Tumblr media
The Painter(sorry, he came out not that good, I drew him for the second time...). Just like in the original sugary spire, he's Pizzelle's ally... What does he do to help anyway? I guess he's just here to paint some space landscapes. He can fly a little bit
Tumblr media
Coneboy and Confecti. They're all made out of stars just like all other sweets. These little guys also can fly
Tumblr media
And finally. Berry/Conehead and Coneball(Starcream?). The main antagonists and bosses of the star spire. And it's obvious that they can fly
Tumblr media
And that's kinda all for now. Probably gonna draw and post more about this au sometime later...

tried clangen for the first time and subsequently lost seven hours of my day. here were my starter leader deputy medcat trio! info/lore below the cut if you're interested about them :3
cw for domestic abuse
Icystar: silver rosette tom with bright green eyes, he/him, leader, playful, smooth-talking
Lavendersplash/star: black and silver marble tabby tom with amber eyes, he/him, deputy and then leader, grumpy with a heart of gold, experienced
Ghostlily: dark gray and silver tabby tom with silver eyes, he/him, medicine cat, cunning, observant
Icystar was the first leader of CoralClan, establishing his territory near the ocean with a small but loyal band of cats. His second-in-command was Lavendersplash, with whom he had pursued an on-again off-again will-they-won't-they relationship with since Lavendersplash was a young adult. Lavendersplash always loved Icystar but put his duties to the Clan above all else, and Icystar never seemed willing to commit to anything more anyways.
Ghostkit was one of the first kits born in CoralClan and from a very young age displayed an intense connection with StarClan. Snapcrash, the medicine cat at the time, was initially hesitant to ask him to be her apprentice because of how cold he could be, often tricking his denmates into giving him the best bits of prey or getting out of tick duty. He trained as a warrior apprentice for only a few moons before it became apparent his destiny laid elsewhere and he requested to become Snapcrush's apprentice. Under her careful guidance, Ghostpaw learned to put his wits to good use and grew warmer to his Clan, quickly earning his full medicine cat name, Ghostlily.
Meanwhile, Icystar returned to camp one day with a mysterious kit of his own whom he named Frogkit. He did not name any mother, and while Lavendersplash was initially shocked and bitter, he softened when Icystar explained that he brought this kit to be theirs if Lavendersplash would allow it, and that there was no other cat with whom he would rather raise a child. Lavendersplash fell harder than ever, and finally gave into Icystar's years of endless flirting, becoming his husband and helping him raise little Frogkit, who he loved fast and fiercely.
However this is where things started to change. Instead of trying to raise Frogkit with Lavendersplash, Icystar seemed content to let his husband raise their daughter by himself, refusing to take on nursery duties even when he had a break in his "busy leader schedule." He barely visited his daughter, and Frogkit started to wonder if her father even loved her. Lavendersplash's heart broke for her and he angrily confronted Icystar about his neglect of their child. Icystar immediately blew up, furiously ranting at Lavendersplash for being upset with him when he doesn't even know what he's going through because he's been spending all his time in the nursery, not with his husband, and how dare he accuse him of neglecting their daughter when she's the one he's doing all this work for, etc etc. Lavendersplash is shocked and apologetic, and promises to think more carefully before he accuses Icystar of something next time. Icystar calms down right away and purrs winningly, telling Lavendersplash how much he loves him, and thanks him for understanding, and he'll do better.
But things don't change. Even as Frogkit starts to grow older and is able to keep up with her dads around camp and leave the nursery more, Icystar still maintains his distance, and Lavendersplash begins to feel like he's just being used as a nanny for Icystar's half-clan kit rather than Icystar's husband. In addition, Icystar has been doing little to ease the growing tensions with the neighboring CherryClan, adding further doubt in Lavendersplash's mind to his capabilities as a leader. By the time Frogpaw is an apprentice, there's a full scale war between the two clans that Lavendersplash knows Icystar practically instigated. Every time he tries to bring it up with him, he's met with the same defensive tirade and guilt-trips that make him stumble every time without fail.
Finally, it all comes to a head during green-leaf when a drought has everyone's tempers flaring up. A series of recent losses makes Lavendersplash publicly confront Icystar, snapping that he's failing CoralClan and that he isn't acting with the strength a leader should. In retaliation, Icystar attacks Lavendersplash, who is too startled to defend himself, and maims his hind leg for questioning him. CoralClan is shocked and horrified but can do nothing, too scared of this new side of Icystar, who promises that anybody who doubts him will get something even worse than Lavendersplash, whom he claims he went easy on because he loves him. Snapcrush and Ghostlily drag Lavendersplash's bloodied body to the medicine den.
Lavendersplash's leg heals fine, but his spirit is so deeply damaged that he spends the whole leaf-fall in the medicine cat den. He struggles with himself, wondering how he could have pushed his husband so far to deserve a wound like this. Snapcrush councils him, urging him to understand that it wasn't his fault and that Icystar needs to be held responsible for his actions. Lavendersplash finally returns to his duties in leaf-bare and quietly ends his relationship with his leader. He attempts to continue working with Icystar, but the leader continuously torments him for his decision, refusing to cooperate on Clan matters and acting childishly towards him even in public places like Gatherings.
At long last, a series of losses during leaf-bare gives Lavendersplash the courage to stand up to Icystar and challenge him for leadership, claiming that his unfit to serve his clan. They fight, and Lavendersplash wins. He promptly exiles Icystar, and none of the Clan cats see him ever again. Lavendersplash receives his nine lives and becomes Lavendarstar.
