Why have I not heard more about Undone?
Undone is a rotascoped animation series that's both sci-fi and a family drama about secrets and rejection and generational trauma. Following a car crash, Alma begins seeing visions of her dead father, a physicist who was researching the manipulation of time, and he believes she has the ability to go back and change his fate. But if you're changing one thing, can you change another and another? Can you create a perfect world, or is there a downside to any change you make?
Only one of the main cast is white, and that's Bob Odenkirk :-) The protagonist was profoundly deaf as a child before she got a cochlear implant. It's inclusive, it's clever and weird, but the sci-fi plot is never more important than the characters and their relationships. So I'm going to tell you that it's cool and amazing, and why aren't more people watching it?
It's on Amazon Prime, two seasons so far with another coming.

Abstract designs challenge traditional notions of representation, inviting viewers to appreciate art in a more imaginative and non-literal manner. Abstract designs are artistic compositions that prioritize the use of shapes, lines, colors, and forms divorced from their representational or real-world references. Abstract art is a diverse and innovative artistic movement that prioritizes non-representational and non-figurative forms. Art allows you to explore and express their creativity beyond the constraints of depicting recognizable objects or scenes.
Was shown 3 different animations and told to work out what type of animation they use.
Robot chicken animation of simpsons
youtube
simple. stop motion, uses actual moddels and moving them very slowly and then taking pictures and flowing them all together. Have seen some of robot chickens other stuff, only the starwars stuff though.

Im not entirely sure what this is.I think this one is cell as its all on one back ground so seams feasable and there are no cuts. I think there is some rotascoping in some areas. hard to tell.
vimeo
This is the other one, cell doesnt feel right. the back ground moves too much so i think this one is tradional. colours are fun. is an interesting limitation to only work with three colours. has a cool effect.
I tried to use a quite complicated with this character dancing - the motion was taken rotascoping but it was quite hard and would have needed 43 times the character drawing to get this to work. Rotascoping is helpful when you want to get fluid movement but boring and I would use it if and when needed rather than for the whole piece. Some people use rotascoping for dance animations and people instantly think it is cheating and tracing - you would have to make someone aware of the video beneath or make you own. Some animation is too human because of the constant fluid frame rate. Sometimes you want a little glitch.
In this workshop we were tutored by Yvonne Sweeney in DRAW/REDRAW which is a way of creating animation alternatively to what we are normally exposed to through popular methods.
Yvonne showed us a variety of Animations
Experimental Animation
Glass Painting animation
Rotascope
Flipbook
I enjoyed this workshop a lot more than I would have expected, by creating animation using sand or sugar we created these movements by working with the medium. Through Yvonne and this workshop I was also introduced to other practices of photography and camera setup, light boxes and layering to create effects and duality of lighting/shade/drama/size/exposure. I called this animation ' NewgrangeSun'.
Yvonne gave us many recommendations for research purposes. I have been able to implement a lot of Yvonnes advice and her workshop tools to help further my work on my temporary project.
On Monday we were given the task of recording a 6 second video of someone dancing to then draw for rotascoping. I did my drawings today, 60 in total, and we are going to be scanning them in next week. I left my drawings as very simple, as this is all new it me and I didn’t want to complicate it too much for myself! I hired a light box to use so I could work in the DM room quietly on my own.
I managed to get the important part of the rotascoping done in a single session, that being the legs. The result was phantom legs walking on their own. overall the movement came out quite well though had some shifting issues. During the process of drawing did have issues following some lines as they got lost in the shadows.
I then added some small details to the shoes so that they looked more like shoes and then proceeded to add a duck on top of the legs and stuck it together. Was quite fun to do, would spend more time on it. I did also forget to add a background. I should do that next time
simple examples of how detailed or not detailed using the rotascoping technique can be when creating animation; tracing over film or photography would mean the restriction of my illustration skills wouldn’t hold it back but i’d have to make sure that each frame is traced with equal detail otherwise the whole thing will look off
Something i did a while back, i still love it #siemese #siemesefightingfish #tropicalfish #tropicalfishtank #fish #aquatics #animation #rotascope #art #artofinstagram #digitalart #digital
