Anna Atkins| Artist research
was introduced to us in Tus during the cyanotype workshop with Tutor Gemma Dardis. Anna is a pioneer as she created the first Photograph book of cyanotypes.
Tumblr media
Anna Atkins was an English botanist and photographer. She is often considered the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images. Some sources say that she was the first woman to create a photograph.---WIKI

Sometimes as I take photographic images of my own work I often relate to it as a continual documentation of my progress aiding my own collection of work and being able to use it as a document for future reference and development of my ideas. I relate more to the visual documentation of a process rather than a written documentation of events.

Workshop Mondays - Plaster Processes
Today, I attended the plaster processes workshop with Sarah. I found this workshop so fun, and messy and overall really eye opening to a type of medium I have never worked with before.
Tumblr media
There were loads of examples on the walls of the plaster studio that were super impressive - from draping fabrics to plaster casts and molds.
Tumblr media
I wanted to use something associated with my project, but the only thing I had that I thought would be suitable was a air dry clay heart I made a while ago when I visited the clay studio, so I just decided to use that.
To create a mold to out the plaster in, our tutor showed us a machine where you could melt, or vacuum plastic on to the object to create a 3D old to pour plaster straight into.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had never seen anything done like this before so it was really exciting to even just see that this machine was an option if I happened to have any ideas in the future.
Along with this, we were shown how to mix plaster and water together, and how to prepare alginate to create a mold. We were also shown different methods of dipping things like fabrics into the plaster and hanging them to dry.
Tumblr media
I was really happy with my finished piece from this workshop. I know it is just a mold of something I made before, but I love the appearance of the different textures from the plaster vs the clay.
Although I enjoyed this workshop, I think I am understanding now that I'm not really enjoying the sculpture side of things.

I choose this image as the viewer can use it as a window while seeing the fragility and brokenness of the wing structure maintained by threads as I imagine how the Mayfly's wing may look after it has descended into the water at the end of its own lifecycle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I continued to experiment and play with my fragile wing after it dissolved in the river.
As the weather here is at -3 it was a perfect opportunity to get an array of images as it froze in the cold misty air.

A little gif while it is caught in the movement of a frozen plant.

Ideas I didn't get to explore from my Temporary project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to explore the ideas of CIRCLES and CYCLES more as a part of my concept for this project. This is a concept I will revisit. I made a quick collage of some of the circular images I had began to build.

Experimenting with plastic fabric and using some of my Mayfly wing images where I spent some time in photoshop placing them in circle's. I printed some and used them in my sketchbook to work with plastic material from a timber net bag and cardboard.

Life cycles through circles as the Moon
AS part of my Temporary project I'm figuring out how to incorporate the circular /cyclical nature of LIFECYCLES through Circular representation.
In these cropped images I have turned some of mayfly wing photographs into circles to represent the lunar moon cycles in our daily lives.

A life cycle of anything is never going to be a perfect circle of experience, when life breaks down, situations occur that interrupt the events of the day. Within the Mayflys 24 hour cycle of existence many occurrences may inevitably happen to him despite his instinctual drive that compels him to procreate as soon as he is born.
The same is true for us as we are driven in our existence to go about the activities that spur us into action wherein we discover many unexpected , unplanned event can arise which causes our path /cycle to be not so linear or straightforward in itself.
Hence I see this reflected in my images of these broken ceramic pieces. I aim to bring these pieces back together again to reflect that cycles will imperfect even break but in nature they strive ultimately to continue on and will find a way to maintain a cycle of continuation amongst degradation and brokenness and imperfection.

The next stage as my temporary project develops is the continuation of lifecycles within the influence of the MOON CYCLES. This is a subject that interests me. The manner of which a direct affect the moon has on nature, time, the ocean, peoples moods, female reproductive cycle, how we in reality have a 13 month calendar not a 12 month calendar.
The Moon has a 28 day cycle.

This is some of my sketched workbook study on the Moon as I research its patterns and movements through the various types of Moon lunation's that occur throughout the year.

Typography
Seminars Pat 1 /2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CRAIG WARD.
My first thoughts about Typography were how linked it is to Print. It is a entirely modernised way to express ourselves and has the power to leave quite an impression on us.
TYPE has evolved into an art form of its own. It has become influential as part of our every day experience of art and design within modern culture.
When I think of Typography and its prominence in our everyday lives I imagine how advertising and marketing has perfected the use of successful type in branding.

composition seminar part 1&2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Normally I don't think of composition inasmuch depth as it was presented here in this seminar. As Des says in this seminar it is an intuitive response to what we find ourselves viewing in any given moment of time.
Our brains are phenomenal equipped to organize massive amounts of detail mostly unconsciously. We may find it difficult to write all the components of composition yet we are processing the values of composition every single second.
One example of composition by design used by painters.

3D Studies Seminar part 1/2 by Elaine Riordan
This seminar gave me a broader insight into the area that encompasses 3D. As a student I'm excited by the wide range of possibilities through examining multiple processes and materials. This artist is one of may referenced in this seminar that I am interested in researching further.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I gained a lot of information through this seminar and this is one I will need to reference back to again as a great artist research resource.
'Homo Faber Guide is a signature project developed by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, an international non-profit organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, which was set up in 2016 thanks to the intuition of Franco Cologni and Johann Rupert. '

ARTIST RESEARCH |
Robert Janson, creating plastic bag installation
As plastic bags slowly become a thing of the past and reusable totes take over, one group of students is putting the leftovers to good use. A team of artists from Lund University's School of Technology created beautiful plastic bag installations ranging from delicate to heavy that resemble giant pink jellyfish. Using light, heat and air, the group recycled the plastic bags into moving sculptures....

WEEK 8 | 1 st Year Workshops
In this workshop we were tutored by Yvonne Sweeney in DRAW/REDRAW which is a way of creating animation alternatively to what we are normally exposed to through popular methods.
Yvonne showed us a variety of Animations
Experimental Animation
Glass Painting animation
Rotascope
Flipbook
I enjoyed this workshop a lot more than I would have expected, by creating animation using sand or sugar we created these movements by working with the medium. Through Yvonne and this workshop I was also introduced to other practices of photography and camera setup, light boxes and layering to create effects and duality of lighting/shade/drama/size/exposure. I called this animation ' NewgrangeSun'.
Yvonne gave us many recommendations for research purposes. I have been able to implement a lot of Yvonnes advice and her workshop tools to help further my work on my temporary project.

Artist Research - Louise Bourgeois
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artist Research -Louise Bourgeois
Louise Joséphine Bourgeois was a French-American artist. She is mostly known for her sculptural works, but was also a painter and printmaker.
In these particular 'soft sculptures', Bourgeois repurposes her old clothes that were once gathering dust in one of her old Manhattan apartments.
"The works refute the classical view of the female body as a glossy object or passive muse."
Tumblr media
"The Good Mother", (2003), is one of the most interesting of her pieces to me. My interpretation of this piece is a woman, trapped in her reproductive duties, as the threads slowly unwind. I also think it's interesting how the sculpture has no arms, as if she has no control over her actions and she can't pul away from the unwinding.
This artist was recommended to me during my progress review and I find her work really interesting.
