#JackedKirby - The Human Dragon!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Upon the break up of the Simon-Kirby partnership in the mid 50s Jack went through a period of freelancing for pretty much any company that would have him. He did the Black Rider, Fu Manchu and a few scattered tales for Atlas Comics (the precursor to Marvel) and also did some spot jobs for National Comics (the future DC) including Green Arrow and Challengers of the Unknown, as well as some stories/covers for the anthology comic House of Mystery. 🔥🔥🔥 The first issue of House of Mystery that Jack contributed to was #Issue65 from August of 1957. He completed the cover as well as the pencils for the corresponding story, The Human Dragon! In the credits Kirby is given inking credit for the cover, but it may have been inked by his wife Roz!!! The story was either inked by Jack or compatriot George “Inky” Roussos.... 🔥🔥🔥 The story follows a college student, Gary, who is fascinated with a carnival act featuring a fire breathing man... so he dedicates his life to perfection a potion to give him this power! He becomes The Human Dragon... but then he realizes that this power may not be all that it’s cracked up to be!!! He desperately wants to find a cure, but for years he comes up empty until he meets renown scientist Jonas Welkly. #JackedKirby - Whoever Made That Girl Wear a Uniform Should Be Horsewhipped! 🔥🔥🔥 I am currently re-reading the recently release Mister Miracle collection from DC Comics (collects issues 1-18 of the series) and just finished up one of my favorite issues. #Issue4 was published in October of 1971 and introduced the world to one of Jack’s greatest creations: Big Barda!!! 💥 After Scott is kidnapped in Issue 3 by Dr Bedlam and tasked to escape a skyscraper with thousands of people effected by the paranoid pill you would think the action couldn’t be any bigger... until a Boom Tube opens up and the great warrior Barda steps through! She is told by Oberon where Scott is, and she shows up to help her former compatriot out. She is a formidable fighter and definitely saves Scott’s bacon more then once. Afterwards they return to Scott’s home to rest up and eat dinner. 💥 Oberon asks Scott about Barda and Scott reveals she is a great warrior of Darkseid who trained alongside him on Apokolips in the orphanage of Granny Goodness. When asked by Oberon if she will be staying, Scott says he isn’t sure... and at that moment Barda appears in a very 4th World inspired red bikini and heels combo showing a ton of her chiseled physique off! Scott is clearly smitten... but Oberon is quick with the famous line “Whoever made this girl wear a uniform should be HORSEWHIPPED!”. Awesome way to close out an issue and really drive home the beauty of Barda. 💥 Barda was supposedly inspired by Jack’s own wife Roz. She was his backbone and biggest supporter while he was being the creative all those years, standing up for him and fighting the good fight for her man in the same way Barda does for Scott. #JackedKirby - Green Arrows of the World Unite!!! Although not known as his most popular work, Jack had a short run drawing Green Arrow back in the 50s. He did a bunch of issues of Adventure Comics, an anthology title from DC, that featured the adventures of Green Arrow and his trusty sidekick Speedy! This one particular story, The Green Arrows of the World, appeared in Adventure Comics #Issue250 which was published in July of 1958. The story proposes the theory that there are multiple Green Arrows throughout the world helping to fight crime all over the globe. This opening splash features a few of them, but throughout the issue we meet: The Bowman of Britain, The Bowman of the Bush, Ace Archer, The Phantom of France, Archer of Arabia, Archer of the Alps, Troubador, The Emerald Archer and the Green Bowman!!! They are all in town for a meeting, and are called in to capture Counterfeit Carson... the story was written by the legendary Bill Finger (of Batman fame) and was inked by none other than Jack's wife Roz!!! The story is also a sort of "re-telling" of a Batman story titled "The Batman of All Nations" from Detective Comics #Issue215 from January of 1955.
