Twinkle- GIRL IN A MILLION: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS (RPM/ CHERRY RED)

What a terrific collection here!  I knew very little of 1960’s British sensation Twinkle (real name Lynn Ripley) other than her sole 1964 hit “Terry’ (basically her version of “Leader of the Pack”….apparently the British press called it a “death disc” and I guess it was banned in certain circles).  Listening, reading and looking at the pictures on here I’m told of a story of a wealthy young girl (she was 16 when “Terry” was released) who had a bit of a rebellious streak in her and this got her into clubs in London to check out the latest bands in the mid-60’s. On the cover of this double cd she’s looking quite doe-eyed with her long blonde hair nearly draping into her face. Disc one is all of her Decca singles (17 songs in all…including the great “Golden Lights” (which The Smiths covered) and this was her classic period but that disc tacks on four songs from her time in Instant and one live track as well. All worth a listen and then some.

Disc two is a different animal altogether. It’s her work from the 1970’s. It starts off with two very fine songs that she recorded for the President label and then includes a 13-song record that was inspired by her relationship with Michael “Micky” Hannah (who sadly died in ’74). This wasn’t released until years later (on Bradley Recordings) but these songs are excellent and some of my favorites on the collection. Had it been been released when it was recorded things could have turned out differently for Twinkle. The second disc ends with her most recent recordings, six in all,  four of which were demos and also a cover of the Monkees “I’m a Believer.”

Serious kudos to the Cherry Red label for unearthing these lovely recordings. The 24-page booklet that come with the collection has some in-depth liner notes by journalist (and Twinkle’s sister) Dawn James who was there from the beginning and there’s plenty of cool pictures. Sadly Twinkle left us in May of 2015 from liver cancer but her music will live on with this collection (and sister Dawn who is working on a musical of Twinkles songs).
