One very specific inconsistency that I hate about Gossip Girl is how in s1 Dan was the one who told Vanessa about his feelings before she moved away but in s3 V’s mom tells Dan that he broke V’s heart when she told him about her feelings all those years ago. Which is it?! Which do you think it is? I’d probably say Dan just bc he’s the one who always says it first in the series that we see and always seems to be the one that falls first. idk. What’s your take?

whooops this has been languishing for a while and I just remembered it because I watched the gg thanksgiving triptych while I was cooking for tomorrow apologies.

My take is: both are true! preseries, Dan does profess his love to Vanessa before she moves away, my favorite version of the telling (other than my little women au, to toot my horn, beep beep) is in this fic by S.

AND

remember when Vanessa comes back to NYC in 1x06? It's been a while since I've watched that particular episode, so I don't know the exact wording, but she makes it clear that one of the reasons she reached out to Dan after moving back is that she wants to be with him. The thing is, she waited too long, and he moved on and is now dating someone else: Serena.

So, you are right that in the case of danessa, Dan Fell First, and Vanessa broke his heart first, but that doesn't mean he didn't hurt her when - in her point of view - she came back for him only to find him with someone else. GG is rife with inconsistencies in the timeline, don't get me wrong, but this is one where you can find a canonical basis for both statements.
