👣BAREFOOT👣 As soon as I take my shoes off and start running barefoot all the careful stability I’ve built up around my pelvis goes out the window. I’m pretty new to running and even newer to trying it barefoot but it shows me the degree to which shoes affect your feet’s ability to respond to the surface they are running on. My pelvis was all over the place, and it highlighted the tendency to heel strike. If i heel strike barefoot it becomes painful pretty quickly. It forces me to adjust my gait to roll more off the ball of my foot so that I am using the full surface of my foot rather than just the places I dysfunctionally roll to. It makes me run faster and I can feel the effects of it all through my fascia and internal organs. It sounds odd but it’s true, and it makes sense given the known benefits of reflexology. It seems I’ll be giving some more of my brother @audiokitchen ‘s advice a go and investing in some barefoot shoes this winter. I don’t remember that last time I was injured. (*knock on wood) Aside from practicing good running form and improving my mobility with @pineapple.yogi , arming myself with a solid rotation of running shoes that actually fit, promotes a natural gait, supports me training for marathons, and allows me to recover - both while running and NOT running is equally important. And that’s exactly what my special guest and shoe expert, @calla_murphy of @jackrabbit_original and I covered in latest Zoom Coaching Call with my Virtual Fall Marathon Training Group. So if you’re training for an upcoming Fall marathon, make sure you: 1. Complete a gait analysis. 2. Have an expert determine if your feet pronate. 3. Get your feet measured - both size and width. 4. Get enough stack height to support you and your runs. 5. Strive for a low heel drop to promote a natural gait. 6. The right shoe should have enough structure to hold your feet in place. 7. Don’t wear cotton socks because it causes blisters. Buy new socks as often as you buy new shoes. 8. Use an app like @strava to track how many miles you have put into your shoes. 9. Buy a pair of recovery shoes or sandals for when you’re not running. Calla, if I’m missing anything please add! Maybe, if I can learn to fly I'll save myself from injuries! @Regranned from @gravity.run - @coach.ansku says it best (read below) ・・・ As long as you are concentrating on your landing, you are not concentrating on the most important thing: getting up off from the ground and moving forwards. Because that’s your goal, right? . How you land, is just a result of your movement mechanics. If you are landing in front of your body, it doesn’t really matter how you land. . Focus on pulling your legs off the ground and leading the movement with your hips and let the landing just happen. . The less time you spend on the ground the less likely you are to getting injured, because no one has gotten injured from beeing in the air!
