New York City Marathon: Tens of thousands of runners. Hundreds of tons of trash.

The New York City Marathon generates a good amount of trash: Last year it was 235 tons, to be exact, of Gatorade cups, squeezed-out energy gel packets, banana peels and spectators’ discarded signs cheering the racers on.

As soon as the first runners start to cross the finish line, over 250 Sanitation Department workers set to work, using mechanical brooms and backpack blowers to pick up the miles of trash strewn across each segment of the race. Come Monday morning, the job is done.

“It’s one of those things that people don’t really think about, but it’s incredible,” said Jessica Tisch, the sanitation commissioner. “Less than 24 hours after 50,000 people have run across so many miles of the city, the entire route is cleaned by the next morning.”

This year, those Gatorade cups will be made from bamboo, and after the race, they will be sent to a farm upstate[1] to be composted. Eighty-one volunteers are stationed at the start line and finish line to sort trash for recycling and composting.

In terms of cleanup challenges, Ms. Tisch said the marathon ranks right on top of the list, along with New Year’s Eve in Times Square. And while that annual celebration is concentrated in Midtown Manhattan, trash from the marathon ends up in each of the five boroughs.

The reason i decided to do a costume, female, male & now this, is because for me the #runners on this post they are not just male or female, they are REAL #SUPERHEROES and this is what makes us to need to appreciate life a little bit more every single day.. “When you’re young, you just run...” ✨ 🏃🏼‍♀️

Hey everyone! I’m new here and haven’t done an introduction post, so I thought I’d introduce myself and my marathon at once 💕 My name is Ray, I live in Brooklyn, NYC, and I’ve been a Swiftie alongside my mom since 2006. I’m a Debut and Rep stan, and I own the song So It Goes 🖤 I love to read and write, I’m queer (they/them pronouns pls!) and I’m a 5th grade special education English teacher.

That’s where the marathon comes in!

Earlier this year for my 23rd birthday, I committed to something I’ve been talking about doing since I was a teenager: running a marathon. And not just any marathon, the TCS New York City marathon, which is the largest race in the world! I’ve loved running for as long as I can remember, and my running playlist is FULL of Taylor songs, which always push me to keep going just a little more. Taylor has been a crucial part of my training process so far, so it seemed appropriate to turn to Swifties for the remaining help I need.

Part of my commitment by signing up for this race is to raise $3,000 for Success Academy Charter Schools (the network where I teach). The money will go directly to programs that serve NYC youth who have been failed by a crumbling and systemically racist public school system.
