I’m the worst about remembering to rest and recover. I don’t know how I got it ingrained in me that you need to grind every day, and that not hitting a calorie goal or an exercise goal means failure. I’m not kind to myself and I expect more from my body than I would from someone else
@kevcar and I recently got in a car accident. Although nobody was seriously injured, my body still aches when I get out of bed. I’m trying to focus more on warm ups, cool downs, and recovery. It’s not natural for me, it’s important to know when to slow down and breath

And now for the real beatdown.
Four days after XC Nationals, I am down for the count. Nasty old chest cold. Needless to say, no running at all since then. I did yoga on Monday as planned - still felt fine then - but started feeling throat irritation and coughing that evening. I should have known something was coming on, because my heart rate during recent runs has been abnormally high. And in the race, I was at 171 - for a 10K! Something I often tell runners I coach is to pay attention to recovery time, otherwise your body assigns you some.
By yesterday it was on at full force and today I can barely get out of bed. Tried to sleep for 2.5 hours but the house next door had a crew with leaf blowers going which was noisy enough, but then it set the dog off on a barking fit. Just can't have nice things today I suppose.
Hopefully today is the rock bottom day and I start on the upswing tomorrow. I need to fly to the west coast next week so let's hope so.

Ice Bath After Running
The big question is do they actually work? Well, from a sports medicine standpoint there isn't much evidence to say they promote an anti-inflammatory response or reduce DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), and more research is definitely required in the effects of Ice Bathing after HIIT sessions. There are better recovery methods out there, that have more scientific backing. I like to diversify my recovery methods across the week.
So, then why do Ice Baths make us feel good?  Doesn't every elite runner ice bath?
The placebo effect may arise from the fact that the CWI (cold water immersion) causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of the arterial vessels in the peripheries) and the feeling of the warm blood rushing in from the core when one gets out of the bath can give an invigorating feeling and make you feel good. This gives the feeling of improved perceived recovery.  It also may decrease the effects of heat and humidity, if the athlete is playing or training in those types of environmental conditions, by lowering the core temperature a degree or so.

🎵Holdin’ on to sandals as long as I can, chills are coming ‘round real soon, make us wear boots again! 🎵🎶 🌸 Okay, that was bad. 😂 And #runners always need great recovery sandals like #oofos year round, especially if we’re marathon training! But before I dig out my boots, I want to give another shoutout to @oofos #ProjectPink 💗 🌸 Did you know that 3% of all sales on http://oofos.com is donated directly to the Dana-Farber Breast Cancer Research team to support new medical breakthroughs? It’s a great way to not only #feeltheoo but also give the love!! 🌸 Plus they have an adorable Project Pink Collection, which includes the Sport Sandals I’m wearing now. Looks longingly at tredmill. Its been two weeks since i sprained my knee. Its feeling so much better but these two weeks without training at all make me feel like I'm going to lose my mind. Still i know i have to ease back into it so to the rowing machine it is! (You know its bad when a runner would even take a tredmill.) #runningrecovery #crosstraining #row #rowing #run #runner https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq8GnZUFpEu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=y1iaofgv5ok0

As alluded a couple of days ago, with some regret I am pulling out of #richmondhalfmarathon2019 this weekend. After battling a sinus infection for 10 days and missing a week of training, I am now just working my way back. @usatfclubxc #usatfxcnationals remains my target race for the season and running a #halfmarathon at less than my best right now just doesn't make any sense from a fitness and recovery standpoint. I still have a hotel booked in #rva though, and am planning to go down, get my own Saturday morning run in and support my many friends who are doing the #richmondmarathon, half and 8k. Then after it we will all celebrate properly. 🍻 #runblr #fitblr #fallracingseason #runningrecovery https://www.instagram.com/p/B4yl_o3H8tp/?igshid=16tt23dsdct4

I don’t remember that last time I was injured. (*knock on wood) Aside from practicing good running form and improving my mobility with @pineapple.yogi , arming myself with a solid rotation of running shoes that actually fit, promotes a natural gait, supports me training for marathons, and allows me to recover - both while running and NOT running is equally important. And that’s exactly what my special guest and shoe expert, @calla_murphy of @jackrabbit_original and I covered in latest Zoom Coaching Call with my Virtual Fall Marathon Training Group. So if you’re training for an upcoming Fall marathon, make sure you: 1. Complete a gait analysis. 2. Have an expert determine if your feet pronate. 3. Get your feet measured - both size and width. 4. Get enough stack height to support you and your runs. 5. Strive for a low heel drop to promote a natural gait. 6. The right shoe should have enough structure to hold your feet in place. 7. Don’t wear cotton socks because it causes blisters. Buy new socks as often as you buy new shoes. 8. Use an app like @strava to track how many miles you have put into your shoes. 9. Buy a pair of recovery shoes or sandals for when you’re not running. Calla, if I’m missing anything please add! My current rotation: Running - @altrarunning Torin 5 with 28mm stack height Recovery - @altrarunning Olympus 4 with 33mm stack height What’s in your rotation? We will continue to host educational workshops in the training program, so it’s not too late to sign up especially if you’re running the @nycmarathon ! Yesterday morning's 6 mile run brought up my weekly mileage to an unimpressive 12 miles. My 2nd run this week & only 6th run since the marathon. I've been battling a nasty cold & cough for weeks aside from a couple of other minor health issues. In the last 13 months I've maxed my body to the limit. After 2 marathons, 2 50Ks, and 2 50 milers by body just gave me a big F you. Taking it easy on myself & giving my body & mind time to chill & recover. #runningmom #workliferunningmombalance #motherfuckenmarathonmom #ultrarunning #ultrarunnersareweird #runrestrecover #runningrecovery

Dehydration Symptoms in Runners
Water intake is absolutely crucial in facilitating blood flow to the key parts of the body that are under stress when we run. It’s common knowledge that blood carries oxygen, nutrients, and sodium to working parts of the body, those being our heart, lungs, and muscles. When dehydration occurs, our blood thickens, reducing the rate of blood flow to these key systems and body components, reducing performance and placing undue amounts of stress on the body. Think of it like this – blood transports our fuel: food and water! Generally speaking, the harder you run, the more water your body will use.
There are a number of easily identifiable symptoms which I’m sure you’ve heard of before. The first one is feeling thirsty. It is true that you’re already dehydrated, or on a path to dehydration if you feel thirsty. So drink before you feel the signals.
