sorry could you elaborate on running not being an accessible sport? do you mean if you want to do it semi-professionally or even on amateur levels? i ask bc i am broke as fuck and always found it the easiest sport to keep up for regular physical activity, but maybe that depends also on where i live/other circumstancial factors i am not considering. just curious to hear your opinion
-running shoes are expensive
-workout clothes are expensive
-there is always other gear you need, depending on the weather but at the very least like. sunscreen, even if you live somewhere temperate year-round
-there is such thing as an area without good roads/pavement to run on, and these also tend to be poorer areas
-as with any sport, time constraints tend to make it much harder for poor and working people to keep it up
i am also poor and run a lot, i'm not saying it's categorically impossible, but i also have an accommodating schedule bc i have a white collar job that i do from home, and frankly running is my most expensive hobby. what drives me up the wall is that the "oh just throw on a pair of shoes, anyone can do it!" line is usually just being weaponised by some condescending like health journalist embedded in the ideological matrix of bootstraps biopolitics to tell off ppl who are poor / fat / disabled. also it's bad advice from an injury prevention standpoint but that's another can of worms

4 days until my half and i tried running, very easy jogging, a little this morning after 10k on the bike and it felt okay. i didn’t feel anything until i pushed it for short stretches, then i’d feel a little discomfort but nowhere near unbearable. definitely concerning though since i only did like 2 miles and i need to run 13 on saturday. i’m not running again until friday and that will be a v easy short shakeout run plus some downhills. i think the goal for this race is really just mental practice for april, especially with this extra obstacle of a minor injury. i need to play it safe but i am having a v hard time with that

oh i just think people overcomplicate it basically, or rather have gotten suckered into a commercial expansion in the past 50 years or so that has depended on mystifying running in a certain way and then marketing copious amounts of gear and apps and self help books and what the fuck else. like stability shoes have always been essentially bullshit, kt tape is just a scam, physios and chiros are quacks, your footstrike is probably fine how it is, gu isn't doing anything a handful of swedish fish can't... idk everybody wants running to be optimised and regimented or at least they act like that's necessary in order to improve and it's just not true lol. if someone else wants to live and die by the stopwatch have at it but i actually think there's tremendous value in learning to run by feel and i think it's historically fucking weird that this position is as unusual as it is. and honestly so much of ⬆️ this is kind of percolating down from elite training methods, and i think those are often bad actually! they tend toward producing athletes who are very fast for a shorter and shorter career, and who are habitually under-fuelled and injury-prone. like, pro training schedules are not fun. ig i can't assume every recreational runner is doing it for fun but like, i am. i think running is not an inherently body fascism dot pdf activity and it honestly just makes me kind of sad to watch people try their damndest to turn it into one. also there are many people in the world who will never enjoy or be capable of running, no matter what genius coaching techniques or shoe soles you recommend, and this is fine and morally neutral 👍

more runposting, i had a “steady effort” 13-14 mi run yesterday and it was horrible lmao i had to stop like 3 times and take short breaks bc i kept feeling Not Good. the wind was rough and i did not eat well the night before so that fucked me up too. it’s also very annoying that the strava app adds a mile when i go over the bridge into manhattan at a ridiculous pace
i was feeling so good about my training throughout the week and then yesterday i got super bummed that i struggled so much. but i am trying my best to take it well bc bad runs are important for training too, and i can pinpoint why i had issues. i just have to hope that come race day on 4/28 when i am at peak fitness and had a proper taper and am properly fueled, and have crowds of people cheering me on, that i’ll PR even by just a few seconds
plus i realized this morning that one of my apps was off by 3 mins so maybe i did slightly better than i thought (i will be optimistic lol). whatever i need to stop obsessing but i can’t, besides work this is the only thing going on in my life

just want to add that running is one of those sports that can be more expensive for fat people than thin people, both because it's harder to get larger running gear and because you typically want specialized gear to prevent like, bouncing and chafing
also true.
and i've also heard from a lot of black runners that there's additional pressure to wear gear and clothes that look expensive and clearly signal to cops that you're a hobby runner bc literally just running down the street can be extremely dangerous if someone decides you 'look suspicious' like there are all kinds of reasons this becomes increasingly expensive
