I’m a massive Little Mermaid fan. I’ve had the theory that in the Daughters of Triton song, Russi Taylor (the voice of Minnie Mouse) is providing the final vocalization for the sisters (Alana’s). I actually wrote to her to ask her, but never got a reply and now that she’s passed there’s no way to write to her again. I was listening to that audio again and something clicked. I think she did most of the sister’s solo vocalizations when they say their name, the person who I think did the other part? Wayne Allwine (the voice of Mickey Mouse).
Hear me out, Wayne had been working as the voice of Mickey since 1977 and Russi since 1986 so they both would have been working with the studio during Little Mermaid’s production and you can hear a bit of a Mickey Mouse tone in the ones I theorized he sings for. If you listen to just the audio it sounds like:
Aquata: Russi Taylor
Andina: Russi Taylor (this one I’m slightly unsure about)
Arista: Wayne Allwine
Attina: Russi Taylor
Adella: Wayne Allwine
Alana: Russi Taylor

Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers (2004)
Tumblr media
The Three Musketeers is gorgeous. Lush, beautifully hand-painted backgrounds, crisply animated characters. It’s got Donald, Goofy, and Mickey. The voice cast is good, there are plenty of hilarious jokes throughout. Despite what the title would lead you to believe, this is an original story. A bad story. It's made worse by the horrendous soundtrack which only gets worse with each song.
Years after meeting the original three musketeers Mickey (voiced by Wayne Allwine), Donald (Tony Anselmo), and Goofy (Bill Farmer) dream of becoming members of the royal guard. As castle janitors who barely get through a workday without demolishing the building while sweeping, their chances are slim. When Peg-leg Pete (Jim Cummings) hatches a scheme to kidnap Minnie Mouse, the Princess of France, Minnie Mouse (Russi Taylor) and steal her throne, only the unlikely heroes can save the kingdom.
I wasn't exaggerating when I said it's gorgeous. The stone floors, dungeons, and buildings reminded me of the fine work we saw in Snow White. There were many times where I was happy to ignore everything going on story-wise and gaze at the movie. So many frames would make jaw-dropping desktop wallpapers because whoever worked on those backgrounds didn't skimp out on the details and never took shortcuts. As far as I can tell, the budget must've been titanic and you can see every penny invested in the visuals.
Why the middle-of-the-road review then? For the soundtrack and story. This picture only lasts 68 minutes. That’s including the intro and end credits. The running time is further padded by 6 songs despite this not being a true musical. In Aladdin, Little Mermaid or Frozen, characters condense exposition and complex emotions in verses. Not here. Most are not full-length songs, but one every 10 minutes is a lot when they're not saying anything and when they're not good. These are bottom-of-the-barrel quality melodies. No original music. Just words tacked onto Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and other classical works. None of it's memorable, which is a relief. These annoying ballads would be the kind that'd drive you bananas if they managed to drill themselves into your skull. For all of the money Disney spent on the first-ever full-length picture starring Mickey, Goofy, and Donald... they couldn’t fork over a little more to get decent writers?
The other killer is the story. While I laughed frequently, nothing about this feels fit for the big screen. The character arcs are as predictable as the days on a calendar. The romantic subplots are some of the most forced I've ever seen. It doesn’t matter if they’ve hardly exchange any dialogue, if they have anything in common or if they even like each other. Think you'll like the movie because your favorite duck, dog, or mouse is featured? Think again. These characters are not the ones you're accustomed to. Donald's explosive temper? gone. Mickey wants to be a musketeer so he can prove being short doesn't mean anything. Pluto? hardly appears. Goofy? Him they actually get right.
I laughed during The Three Musketeers but not enough to make me forgive the insufferable songs, the pointless framing device, and lackluster plot. I wanted desperately to mute it and bask in its visuals but why stop there? With its terrible ending, you couldn't make this into a movie by merely scrapping all of the noise. The true solution is to go at it with an ax. Someone with editing skills could make this into a great half-hour film.  As is? Only if you're REALLY interested in animation. Like obsessed. (On DVD, May 6, 2015)

Yesterday Russi Taylor passed away who was the voice of Minnie Mouse and while I am sad to have lost someone so sweet and caring, I'd like to think she and Wayne Allwine, who used to voice Mickey Mouse, are back together again. Thank you both for the iconic voices I've heard since I was a baby. Ducktales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp
Tumblr media
If you’re going to give a television series a big-screen movie, don’t do what Ducktales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp does - unless your objective is merely to make a buck. This film is little more than a few episodes stitched together and padded out until it reaches a feature-length running time. The animation isn't noticeably better, the characters don’t evolve, no big plot points are resolved and the adventure ultimately has no impact on the show. It doesn’t even have the courtesy of introducing you to the characters to serve as a springboard for new fans.
On an expedition to somewhere in the Middle East where they have camels and ancient ruins, Scrooge McDuck (Alan Young), Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webbigail Vanderquack (all voiced by Russi Taylor) find the ancient treasure of Collie Baba’s pyramid. They don’t realize the REAL treasure is a magical lamp (Well of course there’s a genie in it, why do you even ask) coveted by a millennia-old evil wizard named Merlock (voiced by Christopher Lloyd).
What I look for when I see a show move up to the big screen isn’t too demanding. Either give me something I’ve never seen before, like the kind of visuals a big budget can deliver (like Star Trek: The Motion Picture), a jumping point for new fans to come in (The Powerpuff Girls Movie), shocking revelations about what you thought you knew (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm), game-changing events that you CANNOT miss (Transformers: The Movie) or closure (Serenity). You don't get that here.
Let’s set aside the immediate disappointment and treat this as something you'd watch at home. It still isn’t great. The writing - particularly the dialogue - is poor. The jokes are juvenile and written on the level of a children’s Saturday morning cartoon.
There’s nothing inventive going on here. We get a Genie interacting with the residents of Duckburg and he feels like a watered-down version of every cool genie you’ve ever seen in any movie. Just like the Genie from Aladdin or The Seventh Voyage of Sindbad what does he want above all? freedom. You instantly know how the story will end. Yawn! The wish-granting is equally disappointing. I chuckled when one of the triplets asked for “a million wishes”, only to be turned down, but that's where the originality ends. No dinosaurs brought back to life, no superpowers granted, no trips back in time, or anything of the sort. These kids are wishing for ice cream and new pets, but they live with the world’s richest duck! They could have gotten that kind of thing any day of the week!
If you think the villain will turn things around, you better keep wishing Merlock is a basic, stock evil sorcerer with a bumbling assistant (voiced by Richard Libertini). He’s not interesting. His sidekick is just an excuse to bring in some bad jokes. I bet you a duck’s fortune no one who ever saw this film remembers anything about them except for Dijon's exaggerated and stereotypical Indian accent, Christopher Lloyd's voice and his character's mustache, which he keeps regardless of what form he shapeshifts into.
There are some shots where we see vehicles moving in 3 dimensions that are very well done (no distortions or shortcuts taken that I could see) and there are some cool visuals during the climax too. The characters are consistently on-model and it looks exactly like the show does so it blends seamlessly with the episodes you saw at home. I will also admit that there were some amusing sight gags. I didn’t sit through the whole thing stone-faced contemplating myself jumping out of a window.
If you remember enjoying Duck Tales: The Movie as a kid, stick with your memories. If you want proof that your tastes have matured over time, watch it again or take my word for it. I suppose I’d recommend it for kids because they won’t notice how generic it is, but they're the only ones who should view this. (On VHS, March 11, 2015)
