Tozuka's favorite street fighter character, by the way, is Zeku.

For those who don't know, Zeku's main gimmick is that he's a stance character- he switches between his old and young forms mid-fight.

New Quasi-State-Of-Emergency In Tokyo, 12 Other Prefectures Starts Friday 1/21/2022; NJPW New Year’s Golden Series Night 1 - 1/20/2022: Kosei Fujita Out Injured; Dragon Gate 1/17/2022, TJPW 1/20/2022 Results

Starting tomorrow (possibly today in Japanese time by the time I post this), another quasi-state-of-emergency is due to begin in Tokyo and at least 12 other prefectures, following record-setting new cases in both Tokyo and Osaka. Omicron is doing the numbers once more, in a country that has 80% vaccination, but a mere 1.2% booster rate. This after quasi-emergency measures in Okinawa, after increasing Omicron cases from the US military bases had spilled into the greater population, prompting restrictions on activities outside the bases by military personnel posted there.

It's unknown how much wrestling will be affected by this; Dragon Gate has already said their show in Mie this Sunday 1/23/2022 may be postponed or cancelled due to this, but have not seen any other announcements so far. We will keep you posted.

New Japan Pro Wrestling

The first NJPW tour of 2022 began in earnest today, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld. This is the first New Year Golden Series since 2005, but was a regular year-opening tour from 1974-1990. Kosei Fujita injured his shoulder in training, and has been pulled from events through the end of January. Hopefully he will be able to return later in the tour.

Naito gets the win, and declares not only does he want to beat “the strongest man in NJPW,” but also declared he wants to return to the main event of the Tokyo Dome on January 4, 2023. Ishii tortured Dick Togo a bit post-match. Hiromu challenged Oiwa to Y10,000 of pocket money if he was able to remove the pseudo-Kamaitachi mask that HIromu was wearing. Oiwa did so, but Hiromu had ANOTHER mask on underneath. Hiromu tapped Oiwa out anyway.

If you have a premium subscription to NJPW’s website you can now see a digitized version of the 1978 New Year Golden Series program, which advertised among other things, a board-of-nails match between Antonio Inoki v. Umanosuke Ueda on 2/8/1978 at Tokyo Nippon Budokan. I bet THAT was a thing.

The Harada Dojo where Kondo Isami first learned the sword

The Harada Dojo is a dojo in Chofu City, where it is said that Kondo Isami learned the Tennen Rishin-ryu for the first time .

It is now an apartment, and there is an information board about Kondo Isami and the dojo next to it.

This post will introduce the remains of the Harada Dojo, which can be said to be the catalyst for the existence of "Kondo Isami".

Harada Tadashi Dojo Ruins

Harada Tadashi opened a Tennen Rishin-ryu dojo in a building that was previously the Kokuryo Inn.

According to one theory, Kondo Isami went to this dojo to learn the Tennen Rishin-ryu.

It is also said that Harada Tadashi saw talent in Kondo Isami and brought him to Kondo Shusuke (who later became the adoptive father of Kondo Isami) .

After losing the battle of Toba-Fushimi, the Shinsengumi changed their name to Koyo Chinbutai and went to Koshu (Yamanashi), passing through the Koshu Kaido road in front of this dojo.

At this time, there is an anecdote that Kondo Isami stopped by at the Harada Dojo to greet his former teacher.

It is about a 5-minute walk from Fuda Station on the Keio Line . In front of an apartment called Fermier, it doesn't stand out, so you can overlook it easily. It was lined up with the signboard of "Tanito Farm". Next to the condominium is the road to Tanito Farm, and next to it is a children's English school called Kids Duo.

Who was Harada Tadashi who taught Kondo Isami the sword?

Harada Tadashi was a disciple of the Tennen Rishin-ryu and a student of Kondo Shusuke. He was an assistant instructor for Kondo Shusuke at the Shieikan.

The Kojima family in Machida also recorded that Harada Tadashi often arrived for practice before Kondo Isami arrived.

The dojo used to be the Kokuryo Inn, owned by a branch of the Tanito family which Harada Tadashi belonged to.

Kondo Isami came here, and Harada Tadashi discovered his talent and brought him to Kondo Shusuke.

Near the Tenjin Shrine in Fuchu, where there was an outdoor tournament to announce Kondo Isami's succession as the master of the Tennen Rishin-ryu

Later, when Kondo Isami held an outdoor tournament to announce his succession as the master of the Tennen Rishin-ryu, Harada Tadashi participated in the main tent as a metsuke (a role that observed and reported battle movements). 

In the main team were Kondo Isami with the role of commander, Okita Rintaro (the husband of Okita Souji's sister) as bugyō (military commisioner), Okita Souji in the role of taiko drums, and Inoue Genzaburo in the role of kane gongs. 

Hijikata Toshizo and Sannan Keisuke were in the Red Team and were fighting against the White Team led by Sato Hikogoro.

As a high-ranking disciple of the Shieikan, and as an assistant instructor to the previous master, Kondo Shusuke, it seems that he had crossed swords not only with Kondo Isami, but also with the other members who would later become the Shinsengumi.

Harada Tadashi died in Meiji 26, and his grave is located in the graveyard of the Tanito family at Jyosei-ji Temple (1-2-8, Kokuryo-cho, Chofu City) near the site of the dojo.

Fuda and Mocchy had a wonderful match on the 6th of March this year in Korakuen, would recommend.

Daiki Yanagiuchi

The package Daiki gave Yoshioka was a challenge for the Dream Gate from Ben-K, including a note that proclaimed his intention and a golden rose.

Konomama Ichikawa

He’s actually from Kakamigahara City, Gifu. Yes, he’s from the same prefecture as Shun.

He’ll lose to moves you never should lose to in times you’d only see in squashes. Sometimes he even taps out during a move that isn’t a submission (like when he’s being held in a powerbomb position).

Kancho - a prank performed by clasping the hands together in the shape of a gun and attempting to poke the victim’s butthole.

Some of the people who have answered Ichikawa’s open challenge include Jun Akiyama, Yuji Nagata, The Great Sasuke, Necro Butcher, Akebono (rip king), Kensuke Sasaki, Abdullah The Butcher, Atsushi Onita, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Keiji Muto, Shingo Takagi (returning from New Japan in a special only once a year appearance).

Ichikawa has only wrestled once this year so far, taking it easy and letting his body recover from getting beaten up mercilessly for about 25 years?

La Estrella

Should mention, the dates here on this slide are set up in DD/MM/YYYY order, as that is what I am familiar with.

Estrella was a talented amateur wrestler before getting into Dragongate, which is why he’s a bit older than you would expect something who debuted in 2020 to be. Does he use his amateur wrestling skills in the ring? If you make him, but for the most part, he’s flipping all over the place like you forgot to turn gravity on.

Estrella splits his time between DG and North America, wrestling in the U.S and Mexico.

Shuji Kondo

Kondo only has one championship reign in Dragongate (with it being a very recent Twin Gate reign with Kenoh as members of Kongo) as he was fired in December 2004 alongside the rest of Aagan Iisou for alleged behavioural issues. He only returned to Dragongate in 2019.

Kenichiro Arai

Just last year Araken had a match with GENTARO that got a bit of buzz in the English-speaking puro scene on Twitter. I haven’t seen it myself, but I heard a lot of good about it.

Araken is also a proud supporter of the Hanshin Tigers and was thrilled when they broke the Colonel Sanders statue river curse (look it up if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you won’t regret it).

Ryo Saito

SaiRyo has been in both Real Hazard and JIMMYZ (the same as Horiguchi). I don’t think I need to really explain how impressive it to be able to be in both one of the heel units and the face units, and it not feel weird at all. Genki and SaiRyo are amazing.
