Summary:
Ranma ½ (Japanese: らんま1/2, Hepburn: Ranma Nibun-no-Ichi, pronounced Ranma One-Half in English) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 1987 to March 1996, with the chapters collected in 38 tankōbon volumes by Shogakukan. The story revolves around a teenager named Ranma Saotome who has trained in martial arts since early childhood. As a result of an accident during a training journey, he is cursed to become a girl when exposed to cold water, while hot water changes him back into a boy. Throughout the series Ranma seeks out a way to rid himself of his curse, while his friends, enemies, and many fiancées constantly hinder and interfere.
Ranma ½ has a comedic formula and a sex-changing main character who often willfully transforms into a girl to advance his goals. The series also contains many other characters, whose intricate relationships with each other, unusual characteristics, and eccentric personalities drive most of the stories. Although the characters and their relationships are complicated, they rarely change once they are firmly introduced and settled into the series.
The manga has been adapted into two anime series produced by Studio Deen: Ranma ½ and Ranma ½ Nettōhen (らんま1/2熱闘編), which together were broadcast on Fuji TV from 1989 to 1992. In addition, they released 12 OVAs and three films. In 2011, a live-action television special was produced and aired on Nippon Television. Another anime adaptation produced by MAPPA premiered on October 6, 2024, broadcasting on Nippon Television and streaming on Netflix. The manga and anime series were licensed by Viz Media for English-language releases in North America. Madman Entertainment released the manga, part of the anime series, and the first two films in Australasia, while MVM Films released the first two films in the United Kingdom.
The Ranma ½ manga has over 55 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. Both the manga and anime are cited as among the first in their respective media to have become popular in the United States. Plot See also: List of Ranma ½ characters
On a training journey in the Bayankala Mountain Range in the Qinghai Province of China, Ranma Saotome and his father Genma fell into the cursed springs at Jusenkyo (呪泉郷). The cursed spring causes any afflicted to assume the physical form of whatever drowned there hundreds or thousands of years ago whenever they come into contact with cold water, which reverts on contact with hot water but resumes with exposure to cold water. Genma fell into the spring of a drowned panda while Ranma fell into the spring of a drowned girl.
Soun Tendo is a fellow practitioner of Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū (無差別格闘流) or "Anything-Goes School" of martial arts and owner of a dojo. Genma and Soun agreed years ago that their children would marry and carry on the Tendo Dojo. Soun has three teenage daughters: the polite and easygoing Kasumi, the greedy and indifferent Nabiki and the short-tempered, martial arts practicing Akane. Akane, who is Ranma's age, is appointed for bridal duty by her sisters with the reasoning that they are the older sisters and can dump the duty on her, and that they all dislike the arranged engagement and think Akane's dislike of men is the right way to express it to the fathers. At the appointed time, the Saotomes arrive in their new forms given by the cursed springs, confusing the Tendos, and ultimately leading to Akane seeing Ranma changing from girl form to boy form in the tub, much to her horror. It takes several more pages for the situation to be explained to Soun Tendo and his daughters. Both Ranma and Akane refuse the engagement initially, having not been consulted on the decision, but the fathers are insistent and they are generally treated as betrothed and end up helping or saving each other on some occasions. They are frequently found in each other's company and are constantly arguing in their trademark awkward love-hate manner that is a franchise focus.
Ranma goes to school with Akane at Furinkan High School (風林館高校, Fūrinkan Kōkō), where he meets his recurring opponent Tatewaki Kuno, the conceited kendo team captain who aggressively pursues Akane, but also falls in love with Ranma's female form without ever discovering his curse (despite most other characters eventually knowing it). Nerima serves as a backdrop for more martial arts mayhem with the introduction of Ranma's regular rivals, such as the eternally lost Ryoga Hibiki who traveled halfway across Japan getting from the front of his house to the back, where Ranma spent three days waiting for him. Ryoga, seeking revenge on Ranma, followed him to Jusenkyo where he ultimately fell into the Spring of the Drowned Piglet. Now when splashed with cold water he takes the form of a little black pig. Not knowing this, Akane takes the piglet as a pet and
names it P-chan, but Ranma knows and hates him for keeping this secret and taking advantage of the situation. Another rival is the nearsighted Mousse, who also fell into a cursed spring and becomes a duck when he gets wet, and finally, there is Genma and Soun's impish grand master, Happosai, who spends his time stealing the underwear of schoolgirls.
Ranma's prospective paramours include the martial arts rhythmic gymnastics champion (and Tatewaki's sister) Kodachi Kuno, and his second fiancée and childhood friend Ukyo Kuonji the okonomiyaki vendor, along with the Chinese Amazon Shampoo, supported by her great-grandmother Cologne. As the series progresses, the school becomes more eccentric with the return of the demented, Hawaii-obsessed Principal Kuno and the placement of the power-leeching alternating child/adult Hinako Ninomiya as Ranma's English teacher. Ranma's indecision to choose his true love causes chaos in his romantic and school life.

-sand-
I ducked under a punch and sunk my fist into someone's solar plexus, ignoring their desperate wheeze for breath as I moved on to the next.
When one thinks of childhood, they think of playing around with their friends outside without a care, secret spots, and little inside jokes.
My brother and I think of training since we could walk and blood on our hands before we could write (secret spots and inside jokes, too. Every child is entitled to those, at least). At the peak of our teenage years, we should be goofing off with our friends at a cafe. Instead, we're fighting a squad of recruits at the asscrack of dawn.
All because they had their heads too far up their asses.
"Tsubasa, left!"
"Already there!" I planted a foot into another guy's chest and sent him crashing into the one ready to jump my brother's back. "You can't tell me to watch out when you can't even watch your own back, Kole."
"Because I know you're there?"
"Ha, cute," I grabbed a fistful of dirt and threw it into another guy’s face, knocking him over with a foot to his chest as he spluttered and squinted.
Did we want to be here? No. Did these rookies have to be taught a lesson? Absolutely.
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Kole sweeping the last of his group off of her feet. The ring of trainees that were smart enough not to test us murmured as the last one fell and I cleared my throat, dusting off my hands.
"Let me try this again: Good morning, recruits, this is may be the first day you are with us since your usual instructor is absent, but you will treat us with the same respect, if not even more. As you have seen, we are the last people you should test. I expect no changes in your performance other than for the better. Am I clear?" My voice echoed around the large gym, and I forced myself not to cringe at the echoing sound of it.
"Yes ma'am!" Kole barely stifled a snort from his spot next to me and I jabbed him with my elbow. Ignoring his hiss of pain, I glanced around the ring that had formed and down at the dumbasses who were still struggling to get up, even with assistance.
"Who are these fucking kids..."
"Hm?" My gaze leveled on the rookie who still didn’t know how to keep his mouth shut, and the older one helping him up flinched. "Is he new here?"
"Y-Yes, Datenshi-sama-"
"Which one?" The older rookie crumpled under Kole's glare, and whispers rippled around the ring again as he answered. "Yes, Ts-Tsubasa-sama. Mochizuki-san is new, he just came in last week.”
“Tsubasa-sama? Why are you calling someone who throws fucking dirt in a fight-”
“Jeez, has Hoshimoto been slacking in your education? Or did you guys just not bother listening?”
Their embarrassed looks were enough of an answer for me to sigh in resignation and pinch the bridge of my nose. Was this the punishment for not interacting with the people in the lower ranks as much? Complete ignorance?
“First lesson: fairness doesn’t exist in a fight,” Kole’s icy drawl drew attention immediately. Whatever noise I made was definitely not me laughing at the looks on their faces. Nope. Absolutely not. “You keep that shit in a dojo. It will earn you nothing but a knife in your chest on the street because the schmuck that brought a knife to a fistfight won’t give a fuck about fairness.”
An unsettled hush settled over the group, and Kole took that as his prompt to continue.
“Our honor lies in our values, and fairness isn’t one of them. Victory is, and if you have to use underhanded tricks to win, you better use every trick in the damn book,” Kole leveled a cold gaze on the trainees, his silver eyes tempered to steel, and the color drained from every face in front of us.
“That’s so…” More whispers.
“Ahem,” Another hush, and Kole waved me forward, obviously done for the day already.
Bastard.
“Look, I’ll let this insubordination slide once you children figure it out. Hell, ask Hoshimoto once he comes back. However, this will be the only time. The next time this happens, we’ll take care of it ourselves.”
“Oh, I think he’ll be telling them himself once I’m through with him,” I cast a sideways glance at Kole’s dark expression and rolled my eyes, turning back to the group in front of me. Hopefully there aren’t any other distractions for the rest of training…
“Now, we were supposed to go over weapon vs. open hand combat today, but from what I’ve seen, your hand-to-hand is so terrible that I doubt you can even block a punch, let alone a rubber knife. So, change of plans. Partner up and start sparring, we’ll go around and correct any issues," I smirked, holding up my hand as sand rose to curl around my arm, "Go ahead and throw dirt if you can, I’ll take care of any red eyes.”
Kole’s cracking knuckles silenced any would-be complaints.

Ranma 1/2 Episode 1: The Strange Stranger from China
Director: Tomomi Mochizuki
Animation Director: Atsuko Nakajima
Tumblr media
Hmm... where shall I begin?
I love this episode so much. I really wasn’t expecting to like this series so much when I first sat down to watch Ranma 1/2. But it was love at first watch! I think this episode is a masterclass in how to begin a story. It does so much right! It introduces our main character, explains the gimmick of the show, and sets the perfect tone for the series going forward.
Let’s start with a brief summary: Soun Tendo explains to his daughters that he has formed an arrangement with his old friend, Genma Saotome, in order to preserve his dojo. The suitor’s name is Ranma Saotome... but then who is this girl that shows up bearing that name? And what’s with the panda? Turns out, both Saotome martial artists were cursed in the Chinese springs of Jusenkyo, with Genma becoming a panda and Ranma turning into a young girl. Due to a misunderstanding, Akane and Ranma saw each other in the nude and are justifiably flustered with each other. The flames of anger are only stoked when it’s decided that she will be Ranma’s fiancée. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start to say the least... but we still have a whole series to go!
I love that the episode begins in media res, or in the middle of things. It establishes our main cast pretty well; Ranma and Genma fight a lot, Soun is concerned about his future, Kasumi is the housekeeper, Nabiki lounges (and is boy crazy?), and Akane hates boys but loves martial arts. By the time all these characters come together, we have a base knowledge of who they are and don’t need further elaboration for hijinks to ensue.
It’s cute how Akane is the one who reaches out to the girl-Ranma when the rest of the family is shocked and disappointed. Their budding friendship is overshadowed by the mystery of what happened to boy-Ranma and Genma. Ranma hints at it but the first-time viewer is left curious. And of course it’s revealed in the worst way possible for our protagonists! The tension of mystery, and the building awkwardness of Ranma’s curse comes to a head when Akane walks in on male Ranma stepping out of the tub! You can’t help but cringe at how poorly this gender-reveal is going!
The cringe is made the more sour by how things were shaping up so well for our main pair before the bathroom incident. While the two are already tense, they get engaged! And then Ranma has to go and rub his female figure in Akane’s face.. oof. While Ranma is inexcusably rude, this IS how teenagers can act. Sometimes you go too far and hormones are always flaring, with-or-without a gender-bending curse. But you know that there’s nuance to this relationship. Ranma dwells on how Akane tried to befriend him in the midst of his pouting. This is definitely a relationship you want to see play out.
I’ve gone on and on... someday I want to make a deeper analysis of this episode. I haven’t even gone over art and sound design, humor, or the opening and ending numbers. I think those songs will get dedicated posts in the future. As for the art, I love Nakajima’s work here. The designs have a nostalgic ‘90s anime look to them (yes I know the series began in ‘89 tho) and the movement is fun, especially during fighting.
The jokes are there, more situational and not forced. You have a guy who turns into a girl, it’s not like you have to reach to find awkward situations. The adaptation of Takahashi’s writing is a breath of fresh air in the present era of animation. No lousy jokes, low-brow humor aimed at children. The characters do make silly faces, but it’s not exaggerated to the extremes of Cartoon Network and the like. I like how Soun and Genma weep often, it makes them tender-hearted dads and is a pretty good joke. Akane shows us her super-human strength, but this is not even the tip of the slapstick iceberg.
All in all, a great beginning to the series and one of my favorite episodes.

Who’s a wrestler you’ve never written about but want to?
Ooh, that is an extremely interesting question, anon!
I guess there's a few I've technically written about but never actually finished anything for and really want to. Kento Miyahara is probably top of that list because he is the most charismatic and delightful kind-of-asshole ever and I adore him and I have had a stupid little short thing about him nearly done forever that I need to just push and get finished.
And old school Damnation with Shuji, damn, I have been writing that fic off and on for so long.
Also Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo because I LOVE both of them and they deserve better than a half-done fic! (It's a historical AU, btw, with a poly arranged marriage, ha.)
But people I have never written about at all, but want to.... hmm. There's a lot! But some current notables would be:
- Shibata, for sure. I have actually been watching some old Shibata matches recently, because he was injured right before I started NJPW, but I always get distracted from the (excellent) wrestling because I seriously cannot ever stop staring at his crotch. There's a like a LOT happening in Shibata's trunks, good lord. And he's just so cool but also legitimately slightly insane. I watched that California Dreamin' series about the LA Dojo with all the Young Lions and Shibata living in the same house and have for a while wanted to write something where Shibata takes you home and makes you have really noisy sex just to fuck with the guys who are all stuck in their tiny bedrooms together. And then in the morning you have to go out and face them, and you're totally embarrassed and they're all wide-eyed because Shibata's never brought a girl home before and he's just sitting there loving it.
- Kay Lee Ray, because she's so hot and so thoroughly mean and horrible and would dominate the absolute shit out of you and call you names until you cried and then laugh at you. And she either wouldn't let you come ever or make you come over and over til you were like sobbing to make it stop.
- My most beloved Ken Ohka, but I always think that it would be one hundred percent impossible to write truly in-character fic about kayfabe Ohka having sex without him crying at some point in the proceedings. Probably crying a whole lot, let's face it. And you'd have to write it so it was pathetic in a sweet and funny way rather than pathetic in a sad way, which I'm not sure would be all that easy.
- Gibson and Drake, though slightly more Drake. Epic hair, great tattoos, almost never speaks when in character, so lots of nasty silent sex. Also his character kind of comes across to me as sort of endearingly stupid? Like Gibson is clearly the brains and mouth of that operation and James Drake looking real pretty while nodding along and mouthing the most easily predictable bits of whatever Gibson's saying is lovely. Maybe he tries to silently menace you into some sex but the menacing is unnecessary because you're really into it and it's amazing but you're completely shocked when afterwards he starts talking to you. Not in any way, you know, articulately, but words!
- Ilja Dragunov, and I don't know what I'd write about him but I'm sure there would some super-intense, red-eyed fucking involved. Actually, you know what he needs? Some kind of AU. I don't know what, though, but I am going to think about that, because I feel that is where the key to him lies...
- And for honorable mentions: Jake Lee, El Hijo del Vikingo, Saki-sama, Keith Lee, Jiro Kuroshio, Masaaki Mochizuki, Sami Callihan (please spit on me, you disgusting man), and Naruki Doi.

The New Beginning USA Night 1 - 1/30/2019; Full Giant Baba Memorial Card Released: Tanahashi/Yoshitatsu v. Miyahara/Sekimoto
Tumblr media
The first of the New Beginning USA shows took place last night in LA.  We all know the issues with these cards, and I’ve already bloviated at length about them. They are what they are.
The New Beginning USA - 1/30/2019, Globe Theater, Los Angeles, CA
Alex Coughlin TLD Clark Connors (10:00)
Jonathan Gresham d. Tyler Bateman (Modified Jackknife, 11:36)
Colt Cabana d. Shane Taylor (Clutch Hold, 10:22)
Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr. [SZKG] d. Marty Scurll & Brody King [Villain Enterprises] (Archer > King, Killer Bomb, 13:09)
Jeff Cobb [FREE] d. Karl Fredericks (Tour of the Islands, 6:57)
David Finlay Jr. [Lifeblood] d. Chuck Taylor [CHAOS] (Trash Panda, 15:31)
One Night Only Roppongi Vice: Juice Robinson & Tracy Willams [Lifeblood] d. Trent Beretta & Rocky Romero [CHAOS] (Robinson > Romero, Pulp Friction, 32:20)
Y’know, I love me some Roppongi Vice, but I am not sure we needed a 32:20 prelude tag match for Juice Robinson v. Trent Beretta, which will be Friday. Finlay v. Chuckie was No DQ, and pretty surprised Finlay won that, if I’m honest. Doubly surprised Brody King took the fall in that match. Cobb must have squashed Fredericks, good grief... No word yet as to video release of this show.
Tumblr media
AJPW released the full card for the Giant Baba Memorial show on 2/19/2019, today being the 20th Anniversary of Baba’s death at age 61 from cancer.
The main event of the show is an absolute stunner: IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi will be teaming with former partner, and current AJPW freelancer, Yoshitatsu, against AJPW’s Triple Crown champion Kento Miyahara and BJW World Strong (and AJPW World Tag Team, and ZERO-1 AWA World Heavyweight) champion Daisuke Sekimoto. Sadly, I know who’s taking the fall here, but this should be a GREAT match.
Tomoaki Honma, whose career began in BJW before working in AJPW and NJPW, will be in an 8-man match with Young Lion Ren Narita, BJW’s Yuji Okabayashi & AJPW’s Naoya Nomura. The only real change from what we knew before, is Naomichi Marufuji v. Masaaki Mochizuki has become a tag match.
Abdullah the Butcher’s retirement ceremony will have all sorts of luminaries as part of it, including Keiji Muto, Stan Hansen, and the original Tiger Mask, Satoru Sayama. Should be a real hoot of an event, honestly.

Aikido - História de anos
Tumblr media
, sob a direção do Mestre Takeda.
