Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Japan is home to many wonderful National Monuments, including palaces, shrines, temples, ancient crafts, and one very small turtle! The Ryukyu black breasted leaf turtle is only 6.5–15.5 cm (2.5-6 in) long, and is only found in mountain forests, but in 1975 they were declared a National Natural Monument of Japan to enhance the regulatory laws surrounding the collection and trade of the species.

What turtle do you think each of the saltburn characters would be?
i LOVE this question. Let's see....
Oliver - Mata mata. Great at camouflage, sneaking up on unsuspecting prey. Somewhat unusual appearance, compared to other turtles.
Tumblr media
Felix - Green sea turtle. Charismatic, everyone loves them, the poster child of turtle conservation. Objectively pretty.
Tumblr media
Farleigh - Painted turtle. Very American. Colorful, but not excessively so. Often found basking in large groups (often alongside oher kinds of turtles).
Tumblr media
Venetia - Pig-nosed turtle. The only freshwater turtle species with front flippers resembling those of sea turtles. As though trying to be as adored and appreciated as green sea turtle felix, but entirely different in nature, and doomed to fall short of the ideal. Deserves more love.
Tumblr media
Elspeth - Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle. Rare, highly sought-after and attractive.
Tumblr media
Sir James - Aldabra giant tortoise. A bit dry, old-fashioned, but with a noble air to them. Wait a long time to die.
Tumblr media
Duncan - Leatherback sea turtle. Black and white in color, resilient, can tolerate a broad range of temperatures. Kinda mysterious/elusive. Nobody knows exactly how old they can get. Also they're vulnerable - not as many in the world these days as there once were.
Tumblr media
Poor Dear Pamela - Painted terrapin. Flashy, eccentrically colored. Critically endangered (rip pamela)
Tumblr media
Michael Gavey - Common musk turtle. These guys have a great skill for repelling potential predators by releasing an awful musk. A bit repulsive to anyone who gets too close.
Tumblr media
Annabel/India - Red-eared sliders. Too many people get them as pets, then quickly realize they dont want them, and let them go, like the one-night-stand of pet turtles. Pretty, but so common that they end up just blending in with the background. Often bask in groups.

I could've sworn I talked about her before, but tumblr isn't showing anything... oh well.
About a year and a half ago, I made a turtle yokai OC based on the Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle, an endangered species that's endemic to the Ryukyu islands in Japan. She's the seven-year-old adopted daughter of Yuichi Usagi. Unfortunately, she's also from the bad future of the when i found you series, so... There's that.
I redid the design of her facial markings half a dozen times and I'm still not sure I like it... The actual turtle's face is entirely orange and yellow, but that was overwhelmingly colourful to me. So I did some orange around the mouth and chin, the throat stripes, and a stripe of yellow that goes from the corner of her eyes and down her neck to along the top of her shoulders. I would've liked to have the spots be a little more irregular, but this is pretty much to my liking anyway.
The base is by @phykoha, many thanks!

Back again for a character update!
TW/CW: Mentions of Abuse and Trauma
Be aware and let's go!
Tumblr media
Basic Information:
Name: Alexander Hamato | Age: 16
Birthday: March 6th | Gender: Male
Nicknames: Alex, Xander, or Lexi
Sibling Role: Two weeks younger than Leo and Donnie, almost hugging Mikey's age but making it to an older brother role for him.
Mutation: Ryukyu Black-Breasted Leaf Turtle (later mixed with butterfly DNA)
[First ref sheet]
Tumblr media
Back Story Summary:
Alexander when mutated was dropped on the streets of New York and found by scientist Eric Sacks (2014 TMNT: out of the shadows). Eric didn't see them as a child though, but just an experiment to use. He was very abusive, sometimes making them bleed. Alexander's name with Eric was Seventeen, keeping a basic number to not form any strong bonds with Alexander. At the age of two or so, Eric injected butterfly DNA into Alex, and not long after Alex had formed butterfly wings and butterfly related things. Alexander formed their ninpo fully after the turtles fought the Shredder, feeling their bond in the air and holding on to that feeling of safety and warmth.
Alex was found by the turtles after the movie, being feral and anxiety burdened. Fortunately Eric was killed while the turtles made the recuse mission (in a car crash because he saw his lab was broken into) It took Alex a few days to trust at least someone out of the turtles. (TBC)
[Alexander Wing Ref]
Tumblr media
Extra Information:
- Alex's weapon was the only one he had learned how to fight with when he was growing up. Mostly because Eric wanted to test how well they could learn.
- Alex tends to lay in warm places, sometimes camping out by one of the turtles
- Alex's ninpo can give off waves of ninpo, that any family member (having ninpo or not) can feel, sometimes making it completely obvious of what their feeling
-Alex can fold his wings into a complete cone shape and tuck himself into it
- His ninpo can shape shift to put it simply. One day he could be able to teleport, the next read someone's mind. (When he gets a hold of it, he can change it at will.)

That's all! Have a nice night and sleep well (or day)

So, back to my rotmnt OC idea!!!!
As said, the main turtle is 10 years older than Mikey and is an European Pond Turtle.
If you look at pics of those turtles, they have yellow dots all over, which is pretty cool, especially when using mystic power.
They use bow and arrow as a weapon of choice because they don't like being in the heat of the battle even if they know how to fight.
Because of that, they got the nickname Sagitarii, but Splinter went wild and proposed the name Sandro bc Sandro Botticelli. They use Sandro/a/e depending on how they feel but the boys just call them Sand until they know which one to use.
They have ADHD and autism, which is how they bonded quickly with the boys despite being older than them.
They're one of the two older turtles that were at Draxum's that Splinter saved during his escape, but some ooze got on them and since they last were touched by Splinter they both turned into human/turtle mutants. He couldn't save them because he had no idea where they were (with the boys being the first to get into the machine) and with everything going wild he had to prioritize.
The boys found Sandro in the sewer badly hurt and took care of them, a wound to their chest made it necessary for them to be under oxygen during the night or while doing sports/etc but other than that they're fine.
Their sister, one year older, is a Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle and was proposed the name Karai by Splinter (bc the only girl of the lot), but she still prefers when everyone calls her sis (neither she nor Sandre had names for each other before meeting the others, calling themselves sis and sib).
She went wild when she noticed that Sandre wasn't back and hunted the boys down and almost attacked them.
Sis is the weapon buff of the family, being able to use any that falls into her hands, Sandra is the language buff, knowing way too many languages and mixing them up (they also really are into science but they don't do much of it at first in order to let Donnie be the science guy of the family).
They lived all this time in the sewers, but not in the same area as the boys, which is how they never noticed each other.

Conservation of the Ryukyu Black-breasted leaf Turtle
Last month, the Turtle Conservancy team traveled to southern Japan to observe the Ryukyu Black-breasted Leaf Turtle (Geoemyda japonica) in the field.
This follow-up trip, 10 years after the first expedition, was organized to learn more about and asses the status of this beautiful and very special turtle in the wild and to forge relationships with biologists in Japan. This small turtle is endemic to the Ryukyu archipelago, and was designated as a national natural monument of Japan in 1975. Handling, keeping or moving the species is strictly regulated by law.
The turtle is currently listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to rampant habitat loss for agricultural purposes and poaching for the pet trade. We were inspired by the dedication of those who share their world with this species to educate the local residents. There are many signs and informational displays in the forest, and it is evident that the efforts to protect this turtle are in full swing. The #TurtleConservancy has been dedicated to the Ryukyu Black-Breasted Leaf Turtle for over 10 years. We maintain a group at our southern California Conservation Center, and have successfully produced many offspring. Our goal is to support this species as well as the Japanese researchers in studying this species and protecting their habitat into the future!

Illegal wildlife trade still needs tougher penalties, say Hong Kong experts after rare turtle smuggling case
Illegal wildlife trade still needs tougher penalties, say Hong Kong experts after rare turtle smuggling case
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J On March 8, a plane left Hong Kong for Japan with some tiny but precious cargo. Delicately wrapped in cotton bags and packed in specially designed wooden crates were 59 endangered Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtles. The reptiles were heading home.Their saga came to light on October 26 last year when 60 turtles (one later died) were intercepted by customs at Hong Kong…

I'm catching up on everything I've missed and congrats with finishing your field research! Turtles are my favorite animal, and I love the memes you shared! My favorite turtle is the Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle, because they're from the same island my grandma is from. Apparently the first day of preschool (I was 3 years old), the only word I said to anyone was "turtle."
So following your posts about your research has been super exciting! Best of luck with writing up all of your findings! But for now, celebrate the win and take it easy!
<3 🐢🐢🐢
Thank you very much! I've never even heard of the Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle, but I just looked them up and they're so cute!

Good News for the  Ryukyu Black-breasted Leaf turtle!
(Source Traffic.org)
"The turtle has been proposed by the Japanese Government for listing in Appendix II of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) following the discovery of its availability in international trade in mainland China, Hong Kong and online. It is the first time Japan has submitted such a proposal to CITES, which is currently meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. At home, under Japanese law, the Ryukyu Black-breasted Leaf Turtle is designated a “natural monument” and cannot be captured, transferred or traded without permission from the Commissioner for Cultural Affairs.  But the appearance of the species in the pet trade outside Japan strongly suggests illegal activity is taking place. If governments at CITES choose to accept the Japanese listing proposal, it would see the Ryukyu Black-breasted Leaf Turtle gain better protection against potential illegal international trade."
