Aziraphale's Edinburgh Journey: Part 1

This is the beginning of a series of posts focusing on Aziraphale's trip to Edinburgh in S2. Several times people have asked why he even had to make the trip - why didn't he just email the pub to ask his questions? Ah, thinking like true child of the 21st century, you are! In a narrative sense, its not that simple, especially in the GO narrative where there are always parallels to be found to enhance the story. And I think there a couple of other reasons why its been hard to understand the reason for this drawn-out and apparently dead-end investigation, which haven't really been explored or talked about much yet. We will start to look at one of them in this meta.

I mentioned a while ago when I was putting together the S2 Chiastic structure that I was hoping to find some hints to the purpose of the trip to Edinburgh. What it did reveal was that the trip was a larger parallel to Crowley's trip to Heaven with Muriel in S206. This is pair S; where the publican in the Resurrectionist asks Aziraphale if he one those investigative reporters in S203, matched with Crowley bounding up to Muriel at the end of S2E5 and declaring "Officer, I need to report a crime."

Both Crowley and Aziraphale have fantasy alternative personas. Most of us are familiar with Crowley's James Bond role-playing from time to time and other hints of tough masc characters he sees in films.

When he dons the "tactical turtleneck" we know there is some kind of super-spy power cosplay going on (and it also extends to other characters, such as Gabriel and Saraqael, if you pay close attention.) Hence why it's part of his costume when he infiltrates Heaven.

But we don't often see this wishful side of Aziraphale's, other than his dream of being a magician. According to Neil, he also sees himself as a journalist, a detective and a "man of the world." *

The publican asks Aziraphale if he is one of those "investigative reporters" when he arrives at the Resurrectionist, and sometimes that is the dual role of a journalist, to be both a detective and a reporter.

Crowley has gone upstairs to gain access Gabriel's record, the one place he can do that.

Aziraphale also gets hold of Gabriel's record...er, recorded song.

Hang on, no. That's not right way to look at it, actually.

While you might think the focus is still on finding out about Gabriel in Edinburgh, Aziraphale's mirror in S2 is Beelzebub, so there is a slight twist in the way we need to consider various aspects here.

Perhaps this should be "Aziraphale gets a hold of Beelzebub's music" instead, because he's really going to Edinburgh to find out more about Beelzebub, he just doesn't realize it.

Yep, you heard me right. The trip to Edinburgh is not a fact-finding mission about Gabriel, its actually a fact-finding mission about Beelzebub. And he doesn't get the answers he needs.

Neither does Crowley, by the way.

GABRIEL: I told you you could ask. However, I am the only First-Order archangel in the room, or, you know, the Universe, so I'm not gonna answer so much. But you feel free to knock yourself out with all the asking. Anyway, Armageddon the Sequel, that's a nah.

Crowley wonders out aloud why Gabriel changed his mind about starting another Armageddon, but the trial doesn't really answer that either. Nothing is really answered until Gabriel regains his memories, in the end.

To round out this post about the parallel investigations, each of them take an opposite with them, that they couldn't have got there without: Crowley takes an angel (Muriel) and Aziraphale takes a demon. Well, something demonic, anyway. **

Thank you to @komorezuki for pointing out that the trip to Edinburgh was really about Beelzebub. While you could still do this post making it a full Gabriel parallel, in the long run it makes more sense to look at the other way, as I hope to show you in the forthcoming posts.

**I've read that Aziraphale could have taken the train in less time it would have taken to drive, and that the train station is only a short walk from the pub etc. But this wouldn't have driven the narrative!

I custom ordered my 2023 GR86 in August of 2022. I’ve had moments where I was so impatient that I considered ordering a BRZ or even buying a lower trim that was readily available at other dealerships. There have been other times where I just completely forgot about it, especially since I had my FD2 up until two months ago, and I’m currently driving an S203. Today, I picked up the shakenshomeisho so I can insure the car. I finally have a pickup date for this coming Friday. It’s a hell of a way to start my vacation.

The Prime Minister was in her secured suite at Downing St. when she had heard something peculiar. There was a knock at the door. There was never, a knock at the door. She stepped out of her personal office, and looked at her personal security, Officer Rhyson. With a small shake of the head the officer gestured for her to go back into her office. Rhyson opened the door just as she was backing into the room and was slow enough to catch a glimpse of the person at the door. They looked to be a middle aged business man with a black fedora held against his chest by his withered right hand, and a large black briefcase in his surprisingly young, healthy looking left hand. She closed the door and hid under the desk. "Who are you?! Identify yourself!!" Rhyson shouted at the well dressed man as he raised his service weapon and pointed it at the mans face. "I have an appointment with Prime Minister Julia Ainsworth." "S203 Possible bogey, advise!" Rhyson radioed to the officers at the elevators on the main level. "Please let me explain." The man said serenely, slowly setting down his briefcase and holding out the healthy looking hand. "Don't make another move!" "Please just take my hand and I'll explain. The man said this so calmly that Rhyson started to forget why he was suspicious of the man, even reminding Rhyson of his grandfather. He reached out slowly and lightly set his hand on top of the man's own. A moment passed and when he finally came back to himself, he had tears running down his face. The officer fell to his knees and began to sob uncontrollably as the business man took Rhyson's weapon and set it into the elevator behind them before pressing the down button and walking back into the suite.

"Prime Minister... please come out. I'd very much like to have a civilized conversation with you. It'd be uncouth to have to escort you from your office myself." Julia balked. She didn't see a way out of the situation, the only door in or out of the suite is the one that strange man just came through. She didn't hear a gun go off but she had to assume Rhyson had been taken out. Mustering up as much courage as she could, she picked herself up and walked out of her private office. "Ah, I'm glad you're amenable to meet." "It's not that you've given me any other choice." She said this quite nastily, believing the man to want her dead. "Contrary to what you may believe, you've had many times to make choices that would not have lead me to being here." This made her quite incensed, she had done so many great things after taking office, only extremist left-wing organizations still opposed her appointment. "Well I do indeed see it, quite differently." "And this is what I am here to speak to you about. You have been deemed to pose a danger to the general public and the world surrounding." He left a short pause for this information to sink in. "And... and what?" "All I ask is that you take my hand." He held out his right hand towards her. "And why should I touch the shriveled thing?" Her face wrinkling in disgust. "Please ma'am." "If I grab your hand will you go?" "Yes." She held that disgusted face and her body rigid in hatred towards him, held out her hand and grasped it. Immediately she froze, the hand felt wrong, like it belonged to a corpse rather than a living human. All of the fear she had felt before meeting him face to face resurged and multiplied one thousand-fold. As if everything she had ever been afraid of had come to pass. "Please let me go!!!" "You must see." The old man's face was not twisted into some fearsome facade but wizened and sorrowful. She thought she felt faint until her vision blurred. She realized that she was seeing through the eyes of another person, seeing their lives being ruined before her. Their feelings and memories became hers and she began to weep and cry out in anguish. Every bit of disappointment, hopelessness, and even suicidality flooded into her. She managed to pull her hand away and the visions stopped. Cowering into the floral patterned armchair as if he were the devil incarnate. "These are the people who's lives you ruined through your evil policies guaranteeing those in already at-risk positions even worse off.... Do you understand what you've done?" She remained quiet, fearing that he may subject her to that again. "This is your first and final warning. Change people's lives for the better while you can, if you follow through you may even see your stint as PM extended so that you may enact more change for the better." And with that, the man got up from the couch he sat in, and walked out of the room and further from the building. Julia sat in the silence in loneliness of the suite, thinking.

I didn't get a phone for my collection but i got a cool little camera! along with the photos of the camera itself, i'm also sharing some of the photos i took with the camera! how cool is that!
