Later our troll hero would try to explain this to our human hero, attempting to convey all the nuance of troll romance through a nearly verbatim recitation of the preceding excerpts.
I'm going to assume Karkat's explanation was identical, just with more swearing.
Looking at these two together, I'm reminded of their interactions back in Act 4. They always had a rather curious tone, and Karkat always seemed to be performing animosity towards John, rather than actually experiencing it.
Given what we've learned about troll romance, I'm forced to wonder exactly what type of 'hatred' Karkat really feels for John.
Tumblr media
...oh, damn.
I was just going back through their conversations, trying to spot any quad-romantic subtext, and happened to stumble across this smoking gun, where Karkat expressed disgust at John reacting positively to his antagonism.
It sounds a lot like Karkat was trying to flirt as a kismesis, but John reacted in a way he interpreted as red romance. To Karkat, it may have seemed as if John was trying to enter multiple quadrants with him, something that Alternian culture considers taboo and 'perverse'.
Tumblr media
Also, Karkat's just... blatantly pitch-flirting with Terezi here, isn't he?
Tumblr media
The quality of this image is really annoying me, because it's just barely too low for me to recognize and translate its Daedric symbols. I might run a custom OCR script on it, if I ever have the time.
But every troll believes strongly that each quadrant holds one and only one true pairing for them [...]
It's normal for trolls to have multiple partners - but they're not supposed to have multiple partners in the same quadrant. Polyamory is normal, but there's a set of societal norms that govern how to practice polyamory, and those are the norms that are considered taboo to break.
I'm raising my eyebrow a little at the notion that every troll approaches relationships in the same way, without a single member of the species deviating from this norm. Then again, this is presented as the 'textbook' definition of troll relationships - and many human textbooks erroneously omit much of our lived experience.
Plus, the fact that half the quadrants are enforced by murderous drones might imply that some of this framework is artificially constructed.

Melco N1-S38 All New-Flagship SSD Music Library Now On Demo!
Tumblr media
Hi All,
Some exciting news! Melco’s all-new flagship SSD - based digital music library, the N1-S38, has finally been released into the wild, and I can honestly say the wait has been worthwhile and it looks very smart indeed. Here at the Hifi Lounge, we have always been an advocate of Melco’s digital libraries, which you will always find in any one of our systems. We have been aware for a while that Melco had been working on a new flagship model and were fortunate enough to get our hands on a demo unit which has now replaced our much-loved N50 - S38. Granted not the most exciting piece of equipment in the HiFi chain, but in a world where streaming has become a dominant source, the focus on how digital music is presented has never been more important.
The N1-S38 delivers at the highest level by building on Melco's proven architecture and achieving its best performance to date. Some of the new features we are most excited about include a switchable 10mhz external clock input that is crying out to be connected to a dCS clock and an SFP port for direct fibre connection, enabling seamless integration with ADOT’s optical fibre upgrade kit, which has proven to be very popular with our customers. Furthermore the N1-S38 benefits from a totally new set of system electronics, a new mainboard, plus a new mains transformer, supply and local regulators. The full breakdown from Melco can be found below detailing new features and upgrades.
If you're considering upgrading or in the market for something that will look after your digital music files, please feel free to come in for a demo. Digital music has never sounded so good!
Cheers,
Billy
Features and Upgrades (Melco)
The new ground-up design is based around a new platform, with a new chassis and casework, plus new power supplies. It offers a previously unreached performance level.
A full-width design, the all-new N1-S38 distils Melco’s decades-long digital music storage, transfer and playback knowledge into an advanced new flagship with great new features.
The N1-S38 benefits from a totally new set of system electronics, a new mainboard, plus a new mains transformer, supply and local regulators.
An audio-specific custom 3.84 TB SSD drive, which benefits from Melco’s proprietary layered, rigid SSD mounter, is directly connected to the data path without any intervening RAID controller; on-board memory is increased, too.
Hand-made in Japan, in line with all of Melco’s uncompromising digital libraries, the N1-S38 is the first all-new Melco design since the half-width N10 and N100 series launched in 2018.
The all-new N1-S38 builds on Melco’s proven, unique architecture which carefully transports delicate signal data while avoiding noisy high-speed elements and fast processors.
All-new chassis and casework
Key to the N1-S38’s sophisticated new look is Melco’s all-new casework which benefits from highly stable chassis construction centred around a robust 3 mm stainless steel base plate to minimise unwanted vibration.
Externally, the N1-S38 is complemented by precision-machined two-tone aluminium casework on the remaining five faces, ranging in thickness from 2 mm up to a generous 5 mm, representing a significant upgrade over the half-width N10/2 and N100 models.
Tumblr media
The new fascia design features a unique engraved Melco logo using a special technique, with the bold new aesthetics continuing with the substantial contrasting casework corners which are also machined from solid aluminium billet.
The front panel features Melco’s familiar high-quality positive-click fascia control buttons (now illuminated), a crystal-clear easy-read OLED display panel, plus a USB port. New complementary teal LED lighting provides additional aesthetic appeal.
The N1-S38’s low-slung steel base plate design and subsequent low-centre-of-gravity chassis construction, prevents unwanted resonance from interfering with the delicate music signal.
Connectivity
At the audiophile-performance level of the N1-S38, conventional USB connections can compromise ultimate performance, so robust die-cast Amphenol USB ports are provided for the rear-mounted DAC, Expansion, Import and Backup ports, for improved performance and durability with heavier-grade premium cables and connectors.
The Melco concept of a dedicated Player port for direct connection to network players is now enhanced by precision Neutrik RJ45 connectors; the LAN port is similarly upgraded.
Following the pioneering application of SFP Fibre (Small Form Factor Pluggable) connectivity in the Melco S10 and recent S100/2 data switch, the new N1-S38 benefits from an SFP port for direct fibre connection to a suitably equipped player or network infrastructure. In a nod to its audiophile credentials, the new N1-S38 also supports a switchable 10 MHz external clock input – a first for a Melco music library.
Tumblr media
Further features
Further features include a large, newly developed high-capacity power transformer, which is mounted on its own sub-chassis and exceeds that of the existing flagship, the N10/2. This is complemented by a new bespoke device for the capacitor bank.
About Melco
Melco (Maki Engineering Laboratory Company) was established by Makoto Maki in 1975 in Japan. Maki, an enthusiastic audiophile, established the company to design and manufacture the finest audio components of the time; the undoubted masterpiece of the Melco line was the turntable (introduced into the UK in 1980) which set new standards in music reproduction.
From those early beginnings, Melco developed into the largest computer peripherals manufacturer in Japan (Buffalo Inc.), offering advanced products based on rigorous R&D. These included wireless routers, Ethernet data switches and storage devices such as NAS drives. Now, the company is proud to revive the highly respected Melco brand, offering discerning audiophiles high-technology network audio components in the spirit of those much-revered early Melco products, while incorporating the very latest research into reliable, high-performance networked devices and storage.

What were Kyo and Castor’s first general impressions of the S39 class/kids?
Good question, anon!
As they’re both technically in the 38th class, they were quite a few years older than the S39 kids when they arrived. Castor, for one, was super excited to have a new class! He took the initiative to greet everyone and help them settle in, offering help if they needed it, and giving them company (whether they liked it or not).
Kyo was less enthusiastic about it. More people to worry about. He ended up really taking to @rockwgooglyeyes’s Nyx, though. He saw bits and pieces of himself in Nyx and felt attached to him for that reason—plus, Castor really liked Nyx too, and so a lot of the fondness transferred to Kyo through Cas.
Castor has a lot more friends in the class of S39 than Kyo, but Nyx is also his favorite alongside @aurienneirua’s Aurien. Overall, I see them as the big brothers of S39’s class. Kyo would’ve never been willing to go up against any of the little kids he used to know if he won S38–he’d rather die. Castor was willing until he was matched with Nyx.

Research by [Ben] Burtt suggests that [Sheb] Wooley […] is likely to have been the voice actor who originally performed the scream. This has been supported by an interview in 2005 with Linda Dotson, Wooley's widow. Burtt discovered records at Warner Bros. from the editor of Distant Drums, including a short list of names of actors scheduled to record lines of dialogue for miscellaneous roles in the movie. Wooley was one of a few actors assembled for the recording of additional "pick-up" vocal elements for the film. Dotson confirmed Wooley's scream had been in many Westerns, adding that he "always used to joke about how he was so great about screaming and dying in films."
Transcript below cut.
[Audio transcript:
Sine wave calibration tone. Microphone noise.
Recordist: "Man gettin' bit by an alligator and he screams."
Man 1: "Okay, quiet. Sit down." (general sounds of people stopping their activities on the soundstage) "Okay, when you're ready, go ahead."
Sheb Wooley: "AAAUGH! ... AAAOW!"
Recordist: "The first one you did up here was much better."
Sheb: "OOOUGH!"
Recordist: "No, no, not an 'ow'. A real scream, pain."
Sheb: "AaaAAGH! ... AaAAH! ... AaAah!"
(unintelligible voice behind microphone)
End transcript.]

I don’t know how to explain what I mean about this effectively without rambling and I don’t really want to write a lot right now but I’ve been thinking about why I prefer S1 writing to S38 writing, despite its general bumpiness and still-figuring-itself-out-ness.
When they made Casualty they set out to create a medical drama that was a more gritty and realistic representation of healthcare than the medical dramas that came before it had been. A show about imperfect but fundamentally good people doing their best in a broken system and sometimes winning but often losing, and occasionally having horrible things happen to them. And I think sometimes current Casualty believes that relentless misery is the same as that ‘gritty realism’ the show aimed for and it really isn’t. The S1 characters had some miserable, horrible moments but inbetween them they got moments of mundane happiness. They got to laugh together even after horrible things had happened, they got to have very natural and grounded scenes where they were just chatting in the staffroom together. Stuff that didn’t necessarily add to the plot or drama, but that helped to flesh the characters out as people who existed beyond their worst moments AND THAT MADE THE WORST MOMENTS MORE EFFECTIVE. I don’t really feel like current Casualty gives us that as much and it makes things start to feel a bit… numb? When it’s week after week of The Horrors with nothing in between, it’s hard to care about The Horrors anymore beyond feeling really tired.
Of course this judgment of current Casualty is heavily influenced by my focus on Teddy’s storyline. I do know what’s generally happening in the other storylines but I’m in no position to judge the details of their writing like this because I can’t pay enough attention to them when I’m yelling about Teddy.

Hey, I’ve seen that gun before!
Tumblr media
I spent the other day trying to figure out what the bunny’s other weapons were alchemized from, so their appearances are fresh in my mind. This is, uh...
Tumblr media
Well, I think it’s this thing. That second word looks like ‘crosshairs’ to me. Ababo Crosshairs, maybe? Xhahe Crosshairs?
Edit: Never mind! I searched ‘crosshairs’ on the Homestuck Collection, and it turns out the gun’s name was confirmed in Hussie’s second recap as Ahab’s Crosshairs. Fitting, given that it’s about to kill a white whale.
Either way, I don’t think CA is the enigmatic pen-pal - their speech patterns are too different. He might know the pen-pal, though.
Your name is ERIDAN AMPORA.
For once, a pronunciation doesn’t immediately spring to mind.
UR-ih-dan, maybe? Eh-REE-dan? AIR-ee-dan?
Tumblr media
A flying whale lusus? Are you kidding me? That’s sick as fuck!
Tumblr media
We knew the bunny weapons were endgame, but I didn’t expect a Kamehameha Launcher. Eridan’s going to have an even easier time with Underlings than Equius, and we’re starting to run out of trolls who aren’t cheating at Sgrub.
Tumblr media
Purple blood. Looks like Eridan’s killing his own lusus, before the Mobius Double Reacharound can do its dirty work.
I guess it has to die somehow, and a mercy kill is one of the kinder options.
Tumblr media
Your name is FEFERI PEIXES.
You hear that, guys? That’s the sound of every troll officially being named! Time to pop the champagne!
Tumblr media
Feferi is strong enough to tow a whale, which puts her solidly in the same tier as Equius. I can only assume that having the highest blood on the list has its perks.
Tumblr media
I’m not going to pull out my calculator, but scaling from the whale, this thing is gargantuan. Judging by its design, it’s probably a lusus - but definitely not a lusus as we know it.
It looks like a kraken, which I speculated to be Feferi’s lusus. I don’t even want to know what it’s going to do to the Underlings.
That should keep her quiet for a while.
Tumblr media
Another reference to the dangerous ‘voice’ of Feferi’s lusus. I’m not aware of any lore about the voice or ‘whispers’ of a kraken, so I’m not sure what’s going on here.
The whispers, at least, might be metaphorical. Feferi is getting Sgrub lore from her lusus in the same manner as Terezi, whose dragon communicates with her telepathically. Maybe every mythical lusus is telepathic in this way.
That should keep her happy for a while. And make a freshly orphaned troll somewhere pretty sad.
Eridan’s actual lusus must be his flying seahorse - which is slightly less cool, but still nothing to sneeze at.
Anyway, what the fuck does krakenmom's voice do that necessitates this kind of slaughter?

I like to jab at Reimu’s route and I have a few reasons for that, mainly that I think her stages are weaker overall than Marisa’s but the most important thing is two specific points in the story:
The first is in the second route split on the second disc, in stages 25, 28 and 29. Reimu’s focus on meeting some of PCB’s characters and she ends up recruiting Lily White. It’s all just alright, you get a preview of Suika.
Marisa gets a preview of the second half of the next disc by meeting the Chireiden crew. S25 has Koishi pop up out of nowhere, as she does, in S28 Marisa’s group is at the entrance to the underground and fights with Yamame and Kisume. Marisa finds the buried Seirensen and when she goes to investigate it at the end of the stage is captured by Rin and Utsuho and taken to Satori’s place. The group gives chase, with either Alice, Patchouli or Nitori taking the lead (your choice, whoever you pick also gets her friendship level with Marisa increased)
Then S29 is in the underground, with Marisa stranded at one end and your objective being to get her out to one of the escape points by where you start. If you just want to do that, it’s really easy because you can just outfit Marisa for 10 move and accel her outta there in 3 turns, but if you want to grab everything, it’s a very tightly designed and fairly challenging stage. When you do get out, Marisa goes back after Koishi and gets trapped by a spirit, upon which Mima shows up and gets her outta there. It’s an amazing moment with wonderful music and the entire setup is great.
The next important bit is on disc 3 just before the middle of the Imperishable Night arc. During that part of the game you’re accompanied by Yuuka and Mima, who join at the start of Marisa’s route split.
Stage 39 is where Marisa and Reimu get their upgrades/promotions whatever you want to call it. Marisa had just had an encounter with Tewi in S38 and the group is chasing after her. She then gets herself trapped by Tewi’s underlings and is overwhelmed and beaten down. Alice, Nitori and Patchouli rush in to protect her and that’s just what you have to do:
Guard a zone in the center of the map for a few turns while new enemies have spawned in. If any enemy steps onto the zone, you lose. Then, once you’ve guarded Marisa for long enough, she regains her consciousness and we get a flashback to years back where she was training with Mima, set to a low-energy rendition of Magician’s Melancholy that still gets me to ears. After that is another flashback scene of Marisa, Reimu and Rinnosuke watching a meteor shower. Then Marisa gets back up, takes off in a flash of light, music-overrides the entire stage with her new theme (not even special themes of other characters can take priority over it) and blasts all the surrounding enemies away. The stage objective now is to „use Marisa’s new moves and have her finish the stage“. It’s not difficult anymore either, she has no problem defeating all the enemies by herself. It’s just about her showing off.
Whenever you use one of her new attacks for the first time, a brief conversation plays with one of her friends and rivals who inspired it. And all of her new attacks look so good. Just amazing. Her old animations were getting a bit stale, since she’s been around with the exact same attacks since the start of the game and the animators have just been getting better and better over time, so it’s an all-around amazing moment.
Particular mention has to go to her combination attack with Alice.
She made this one up near the end of the first disc in the spur of the moment when facing the three fairies of light, who work well together and have their own combination attack(s). It was called „Proto Malice Cannon“ then and is a pretty competent move. „Malice Cannon“ is a play on Marisa and Alice and an actual thing in Imperishable Night where you can deal way more damage than you’re supposed to by exploiting certain mechanics with the two.
Now, with her form change Malice Cannon is also updated, but Alice still has the Proto version that pairs with old Marisa so she can’t actually initiate the move (any user of a combination attack can initiate it, as long as all participants are close to each other) and that’s just a really cool detail.
The Proto version was just the two firing side by side at the same time. There was no coordination or any synergie and then the updated one just looks amazing.
In Reimu’s stage Yukari shows up, goes „please wait warmly“, whisks her away for two or so turns and then returns with Reimu in a new outfit and with new moves.
