I Got the Call

Summary: You waited by the phone for two days. When it rings, your world shatters.

The phone rings. It doesn’t feel real.

You’ve been staring at it for two days. Daring it to make a sound. Begging it not to.

When it finally does, your heart knows before your mind does. You answer with trembling hands.

“Y/N?” says a voice—Hill’s.

And your knees buckle.

“He’s alive,” she says quickly. “But it’s not—he’s not stable.”

Your blood runs cold.

“He asked for you,” she adds softly. “Before they sedated him. He said your name.”

The facility is blurred lines and too-bright lights. Someone’s talking beside you, but you can’t hear anything past the roar of your pulse.

They bring you into a small room. The smell of antiseptic is sharp. The silence worse.

And then you see him.

Bucky.

He’s lying in a hospital bed, chest barely rising, lips pale. His arm is covered in blood-soaked gauze. Monitors beep in strange, irregular rhythms. Like even the machines aren’t sure he’s still here.

You walk closer. He stirs. Barely.

One eye cracks open. Flickers.

You fall to your knees beside him, grabbing his hand. It’s ice-cold “Bucky,” you whisper “I’m here.”

His eyes flutter again, struggling to focus. But then—he sees you. And smiles.

God, he smiles “Didn’t… wanna go… without seeing you… one last time…” His voice is barely a breath.

You shake your head, tears streaking your cheeks “Don’t say that. Please don’t say that.”

He squeezes your fingers—weak, almost nothing. But you feel it.

“I love you,” he mouths.

You lean closer, lips trembling. “I love you too. Please—just hold on. Please.”

His eyes begin to close.

“No, no—Buck, stay with me. Don’t close your eyes, baby—stay—”

The monitor wails. Flat. Everything goes white. Hands pull you away. Voices shout.

You’re screaming his name, reaching for him, but it’s already over. They’re still trying to bring him back. You know they won’t. You already heard his goodbye.

He waited for you. He held on until he could see you one last time.

And then he let go.
