Budgeting 101...

Every one knows that budgeting is quite a pain in the ass. It is something that we have to learn consistently throughout the time. At some months, you might look like a Budget goddess and at other months, you might just look like a mess. So, what can we do to improve our budgeting skills? What are the action steps? Here, I will list out some guidelines that worked and still is working for me (at least for now).

1) Count your net income after Tax - this is a very important step as it will show you how much exactly you have to budget your way through the month.

2) Savings and Emergency Fund - Put a certain amount of money (Let’s say 30%) out of your net income into your savings account and emergency fund. This can be automated as well so that you won’t have to do it manually. Pick a fixed date and let the bank do the standing instructions. So far it works for me and also for my daughter’s savings!

3) Get clear with your fixed expenses - Fixed expenses include Mortgage, car loan, student loan, internet bills etc. Once you have these figured out, you will know how much money you have left to budget for your next point which is the Variable Expenses.

4) Be creative with your variable expenses - Here is where your creativity and ability to pull through with a specific amount of money and budget it for the whole month comes in handy. It would be easier if you break it down to weekly expenses, so it will be much easier to track down your money and spending. It also means, you will have to check in with your money weekly (Money Dates). I will explain on another post about Money Dates and why it is vital. So, let’s see an example. Let’s say, if you have budgeted RM300 weekly for groceries etc, then stick to it (Yes, you need to have HIGH DISCIPLINE TO DO THIS). When you go for groceries, make sure you list down all the stuffs you need to buy before going to the supermarket. The key point here is to STICK WITH your list. Do not get distracted. Do not pick any items that’s not in your list. I usually spend around RM150 - RM200 weekly for groceries (A family of 4). To stick to this small budget, we have meals planned throughout the week, so we know what to cook each day, it is actually a very useful step. If you haven’t try it, then you should. And the balance of RM100/RM150, I’d put gas in our car, buy diaper etc. Most of the time, we will still have balance at the end of the week and I’ll put that into savings as well. Please don’t follow my calculation/budget. Every family/individual is different. Some might spend more and some might spend less. Most importantly, do not compare your budget with other families’ budget. 

5) Give yourself a break - Don’t stress yourself out. Life is not all about budgeting. Yes, it is IMPORTANT, but, you also need to live in the PRESENT. Therefore, be sure to set an amount of money maybe bi-weekly so that you and your family can enjoy outside activities together. Perhaps, the activities you choose won’t even require a lot of money :). 

6) Be honest - Like I stated at the beginning of this post, budgeting can be a pain in the ass. So, be honest to yourself, you will fail to follow your budget every once in a while, but it is never too late to get back on track again. It won’t be smooth sailing, but it is a worthy experience. Every time you fail, don’t give up. Remember, to be financially smart/free, you have to have discipline. It requires practice and failing a few times comes along in the package. Bear with it.
