'Universal Pictures has finally unveiled Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb epic “Oppenheimer” at a world premiere event in Paris. First reactions to the nearly three-hour drama are pouring in and are strong across the board, with the film being called a “spectacular achievement” and “audacious.”
Writing for The Los Angeles Times, former critic Kenneth Turan hailed “Oppenheimer” as “arguably Nolan’s most impressive work yet in the way it combines his acknowledged visual mastery with one of the deepest character dives in recent American cinema.”
Matt Maytum, deputy editor of Total Film, said Nolan’s latest left him “stunned,” adding, “[It’s] a character study on the grandest scale, with a sublime central performance by Cillian Murphy. An epic historical drama but with a distinctly Nolan sensibility: the tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design, remarkable visuals. Wow.”
Associated Press film writer Lindsey Bahr called the movie “a spectacular achievement in its truthful, concise adaptation, inventive storytelling and nuanced performances from Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and the many, many others involved.”
“Totally absorbed in ‘Oppenheimer,’ a dense, talkie, tense film partly about the bomb, mostly about how doomed we are,” The Sunday Times writer Jonathan Dean posted. “Happy summer! Murphy is good, but the support essential: Damon, Downey Jr & Ehrenreich even bring gags. An audacious, inventive, complex film to rattle its audience.”
“Oppenheimer,” based on the 2005 book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, tracks the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II through the eyes of theoretical physicist and Manhattan Project leader J. Robert Oppenheimer. The director’s longtime collaborator Cillian Murphy gets his first leading turn in a Nolan tentpole thanks to “Oppenheimer,” which also stars Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek and more also star.
Bird previously raved about Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” adaptation during a conversation at the Institute for Advanced Study last month.
“I am, at the moment, stunned and emotionally recovering from having seen it,” Bird said. “I think it is going to be a stunning artistic achievement, and I have hopes it will actually stimulate a national, even global conversation about the issues that Oppenheimer was desperate to speak out about — about how to live in the atomic age, how to live with the bomb and about McCarthyism — what it means to be a patriot, and what is the role for a scientist in a society drenched with technology and science, to speak out about public issues.”
Notably, “Oppenheimer” is Nolan’s first R-rated release since 2002’s “Insomnia.” It also marks his first collaboration with Universal Pictures following his exit from Warner Bros., where he spent over a decade helming films such as “Interstellar,” “Inception” and his “Dark Knight” trilogy...'

Had a dream Joe Keery and Andrew Garfield were in a Safdie bros movie where they played gay lovers running from the mob and they made out to EDM in a club bathroom to hide from a hitman. My subconscious is a genius.

Since joining forces in late 2016, Chicago rappers Quentin Branch and Brian Warren have become more lyrically pointed and sonically experimental with each new release. Their 2017 debut Ok! sounds positively poppy despite the self-lacerating lyrics. By 2019 on the EP Talkshit!, the music is darker, drawing from Detroit techno and industrial music as much as underground acts like Clipping and Dälek. On their latest album, The Legend of ABM, the pair combine ferocious dexterity and radical truth-telling with the coruscating sonic architecture of producer Formants. As Andrew Forell noted in his recent review, “Rapping from within the belly of a diseased beast, the pair rely on human rhythms that dodge and weave the noise of the city ricocheting around them.”
Quentin
Philip K. Dick — Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
Tumblr media
A lot of Dick’s novels inspired some of the writing for The Legend of ABM, especially the themes that deal with existential struggles with technology, authoritarian governments, paranoia, and consumerism. A lot of those core themes are explored in his book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
Wu-Tang Clan — Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
youtube
One of the most influential albums in music history. This album taught us how to channel some of the most traumatic aspects of being Black in America with humor and charisma while being accessible to people unfamiliar with said aspects.
Charles Bukowski — Women and Factotum
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most of his poems came from the perspective of the dying working class: working while pursuing art, alcoholism, suicide, and the American dream. His books, most notably Women and Factotum heavily influenced the writing on this album.
Public Enemy — Fear of a Black Planet
youtube
This group is very significant to us. The way they infused political messages critiquing American racism and the media have had a profound effect on our own music. One project that has had a huge influence on our style is Fear of a Black Planet.
Paul Thomas Anderson — There Will Be Blood
youtube
2007 American classic directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film explores the dark side of capitalism and the American dream in late 19th and early 20th centuries. Similar themes are exposed in The Legend of ABM.
Brian
OutKast — Stankonia
youtube
The duo perfected the art of juggling themes of self-inflicted struggles and interpersonal relationships. They also helped me with my approach towards some of the writing process on The Legend Of ABM, especially the album Stankonia.
Kendrick Lamar — Damn
youtube
This project taught me the art of balancing the flaws within oneself and keeping a level head in a crazy world.
Safdie Brothers — Uncut Gems
youtube
A movie directed by the Safdie bros with its unique and unsettling camera speed and turbulent atmosphere gave me the inspiration to rap as chaotic as the feeling you get when watching this film.
Earl Sweatshirt — Some Rap Songs
youtube
An artist that has a profound Influence on my lyrical content as well as my approach to the artistry. His ability to step out of the box while pushing his artistic integrity to new levels is unmatched.
Coen Brothers — No Country for Old Men
youtube
A huge theme that stuck out to me was the passing of time and generational change. I wanted to make lyrics that made the listener feel as uncomfortable as Anton Chigur's cold but calculated nihilism.

The Curse would be so violently antisemitic if it weren't written by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie. It truly surpasses the Coen bros' A Serious Man in that regard.

Rumor is Timmy is doing a Safdie Bro movie with Adam Sandler. You know this is true he’s been “working the angles” and manifesting this for a long time. Remember the article he wrote about The Bros a few years ago. Timmy knows how to play the game. No A24 producing this time so is this where we finally insert Imperative Productions, Falsetto Films with producers Mike and Gino and Leo too? Also make it about Sport probably Soccer with doco style or about a footballer played by Timmy? Yes please!!
Yes Anon thank you , there 's a new article today about this
Thank you 🥰

Who is your favorite director of out the ones Timothee has worked with? Is there someone you’d like to see him collaborate with on a future project?
Of course, I love Greta, she's amazing, and I've begrudgingly learned to understand and appreciate Luca again because he does seem to truly know how to extract amazing performances from Tim. There's of course, Chris Nolan, the OG, I mean. As for who I would like to see him work with in the future? I'm still holding out for James Mangold and GE because I know that will be amazing, but I also still dream of some wild, gritty Safdie Bros film. And after seeing Nope several times now (amazing film!!), I would love something with Jordan Peele. ✌️

i've had the best day today 🌸
had the most nice af breakfast, a sunny side up egg on toast with guac/mashed avocado isn't anything new, but i grilled mushrooms this time to add on top and it was soooo good. need to work out how to fry everything up with less oil and we'll be in business.
this is me during a guided meditation when i can't focus:
Tumblr media
i worked out for almost 40 minutes, i need a gold ass sticker. pj cat went with me part way, i would run and he'd run next to me it was so cute. they really don't lie when they say working out gives you an endorphin boost, i was out there breaking a sweat and plotting how to set up a meeting with the safdie bros, lol.
dinner was nice too, i did brainstorming afterwards but it kind of turned into another hyping up/manifestation session and now if feel less desperate and bleak about where to get this side hustle money from so i'm not totally broke while i plot my big scale things. i'll figure this shit out, i got this, i got everything.

'In its latest milestone, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has passed the $900M mark worldwide. The estimated total through Friday is $903M, including $586M from the international box office. With Saturday and Sunday numbers, that global cume is projected to reach $912M. This will make it the highest grossing biopic ever at the global box office, ahead of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Oppenheimer is expected to gross $10M from 83 offshore markets this session, reaching $593M through Sunday. It is the biggest Nolan film of all time at the international box office when restated to today’s dollars.
The Universal title is already the No. 3 movie of the year globally and internationally (behind only Barbie and The Super Mario Bros Movie). Topping the nine-century benchmark is an astounding feat for a three-hour R-rated drama.
This is Nolan’s third-biggest film ever globally, behind The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight. Overseas, it is Nolan’s second-biggest in reported grosses behind just TDKR. Also offshore, Oppenheimer is now Nolan’s highest-grossing film in 64 markets, including the UK where it has now surpassed Dunkirk.
Led by Cillian Murphy, the film boasts a stellar cast including Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke among many others.
It began overseas rollout on July 19 with domestic joining on July 21. Since then, it has enjoyed massive play. Last weekend, its eighth in release, saw a drop of 52% as summer drew to a close in many markets.
Oppenheimer’s Top Five offshore markets through Friday are the UK ($72.6M), China ($50M), Germany ($47.5M), France ($41.3M) and Australia ($26.2M).
Also, big hat tip here to Universal which has now crossed $4B at the global box office, only the second studio to the milestone in 2023. It is also only the third time any studio has reached the mark since 2019 and the fourth time Universal has passed $4B (2015, 2017, 2018, 2023).
Universal has released three of the top five films this year globally to date. Oppenheimer is the studio’s 12th biggest movie ever worldwide and its biggest non-franchise film of all time.
Internationally, Uni has released three of the top four films this year. Oppenheimer is the 11th biggest Uni title of all time overseas.'
