I went sailing today for the first time this year!
It rained and there was practically no wind so we weren’t going anywhere fast, but I had an absolutely amazing time!
It’s such a good feeling to be out on the water even if you’re just drifting like I was today. The river is so beautiful from the water and it’s such a feeling of freedom.
I really recommend giving it a go if you can and think you’d enjoy it – my local sail ability offers a free taster session and I think that’s pretty standard for other places.

open starter ✼ @swstarters where ✼ birch bay beach when ✼ just before noon
'Seize the day,' Louis's father would say as the first faint rays of sunshine peeked their way through thin curtains. Marseille's sea breeze would greet his nostrils with its sometimes pungent, salty kiss and linger in it until another more pleasant smell took its place. A flaky pastry of some sort more than anything else. Something the boulangerie (bakery) next door would call its 'delicacy of the day,' completely made up of ingredients no one would expect. That was what Louis missed everyday he woke up in a country that wasn't his own.
Sure, there was a large body of water at his doorstep, far deeper and vast than the Mediterranean sea, plenty sailable. But it was just that—a horizon as endless and unknown as the mind of his wealthy commissioner. Constantly changing with twists and turns of brilliance and madness. If he stared into the cluttered maximalist walls of his workplace any longer, he could very well lose his mind from the overstimulation. But now, he could rest.
Sleep-deprived but irreversibly caffeine-addled, Louis thought to expend his remaining energy taking a stroll along the boardwalk. The change of scenery alone put him in a better mood. Perhaps he could grab something to eat on his way back. A burger, maybe? Or— It wasn't until his shoulder collides into another that he returns to the present. "Merde," he swears to himself, now having to focus his attention on the individual he'd bumped into. "I... eh.. I'm sorry," Louis utters, half-dazed and blinking to register the interaction. "Let me help you with that."

PROJECT PICS!!!!!
Two years past originally purchasing her, My Sun, AKA "Sunny" is finally getting the TLC she needs to get out on the water this spring. Those who remember when we first got her will recall that she was a bit of a mess! This has not changed.
Sunny is a 1969 O'Day Mariner 19 2+2 with some bad patch ups, dingy sails, and a leak in the centerboard throughbolt. Hopefully with some sanding, painting, sail tape, and a new rubber gasket, she won't be necessarily pretty, but she'll at the very least be ready to sail by the time it starts getting warm.
Tumblr media
She does make a lovely silhouette :) But before we do anything, she's going to need a good pressure wash up top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The patch job on top of the cabin :(( The previous owner has also drilled holes into the top of the hatch cover for some unknown reason. If anyone has any idea I'd love to know lol.
For the patch itself, I'm going to assume that someone's foot cracked the top while trying to step the mast, and that's the reason for the shoddy plywood "support beam" as well. Getting rid of that or replacing it will be a job for next year. The edging along the hatchway needs to be replaced as well, but luckily we have some on hand. I don't have pictures of the wooden slats for the hatchway so you'll have to believe me when I say it's the worst vanish job you'll ever see.
Anyways, the tracks need to be taken off to remove the hatch. After that it's patching up those holes, painting, and giving her a good wax. If you have a keen eye as well you'll notice here that the jib sheets are run to the front of the cabin. If I don't end up selling her, in future years I might replace those cleats and move them further down the cockpit for easier single-handing. Nice!
Tumblr media
Nasty patch on the rubrail 🤢 The fiberglass patch will need to be completely sanded down if we want to fit a new piece of rubrail on there. Not replacing the whole rubrail this year, so the patch will undoubtedly look different from the rest of the rubrail. Once again, not pretty, just sailable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
O'Day emblem completely broken :((( They don't sell anywhere that I can find, and forumgoers have apparently been making cast molds to create their own replacements as opposed to using vinyl. I might try to make one with 3D printing. There's the port side one there too, for an unbroken reference.
You'll notice a lot of small cracks in this photo. They're all over the rest of the boat, too. These aren't structural, and are simply stress cracks in the gelcoat that are a product of the boat's age. They aren't a necessary fix to get her in the water though, so they're staying untouched this year.
Tumblr media
A mount for a motor, vinyl lettering that needs to be replaced, and that plank of wood in the middle there is for supporting the mast during transit. The mount isn't pretty, but there's no reason to replace it- it should work fine. With the name being removed, we need to think of whether we should change the name. Changing the name of a boat is bad luck, but shifting it to Sunny Days would be a huge improvement.
I don't have any photos right now of the mast, sails, or lines, but the mast needs to be buffed, the sails need to be patched, and the halyards and sheets need to be replaced. The centerboard uphaul needs a replacement too.
I'll try to remember to post updates as I make progress 🌄 !

It’s only after all is said and done and they are leaving on their—thankfully, still sailable—ship back to Baltigo, watching the wisps of smoke rising in the distance, that the adrenaline seems to drain from Ace’s body, the agony of his many injuries finally pushing to the forefront of his mind. He sways on his feet and would likely have collapsed if not for Sabo’s sturdy arms around him.
“Stay with me, alright?” Sabo says, face contorting with concern. “We’ll get you to the infirmary the second we land back home.”
Ace scoffs. “Not like I’m gonna die, Sabo.”
“No,” Sabo agrees. “But you put a lot of strain on your injuries. Fuck, Ace, how much blood have you lost?”
From the torture or the fighting? he almost asks, only to bite his tongue before he can blurt it out. No need to make Sabo freak out.

I'm definitely late in posting this, but the last chapter of Kaleidoscope is up, which means you can now enjoy the fic in its entirety. <3
Thank you to everyone for all your support on this piece!

The capture of HMS Junon 1809
On 13 December, HMS Junon, which was in company with HMS Observateur on its way to a French blockade of Guadeloupe, was captured by the French. Juno was a 40-gun frigate, but her escort was only a 14-gun sloop, and they had to defend themself against the two 40-gun frigates Clorinde and Renommée and the lightly armed flûtes Loire and Seine. But because of the overwhelming force, the British had to surrender in the end. Lieutenant George Vernon Jackson gave a detailed account of what happened after the surrender.
Tumblr media
A naval engagement at night, an action between HMS Junon and the French frigates Renommée and Clorinde, 13 December 1809, by English School, early 19th Century (x)
"I returned to my post and saw the gunroom steward comming towards me. He said that we had struck. To satisfy mayself as to the fact, I went to the quarter- deck ladder, where i was met by a salute if bayonets and the exclamation, “ En bas...” (below) On this I repaired as fast as I could ti the captain’s cabin. Poor fellow, he was lying there disabled by four severe wounds; and as I entered he turned his head and remarked with a smile, “ Damn ‘em, Jackson, they’ve spoilt my dancing.” (He was severely wounded in the arms and legs. Later, one leg and one hand had to be removed from him on land. However, Captain John Shortland never recovered and died on 10 January 1810.)
The French commander then came on board and, with the help of a French-speaking midshipman, all the details for the later procedure were clarified. The captain was allowed to take one lieutenant and two midshipmen with him on the Renommée while the others were distributed among all four ships. During the battle the Midshipman John Thompson tried to save the signal book from the French. What Jackson mentions here is very commendable.
“ He passed amidst the shower of musket balls to execute his commission, displaying the most consummate coolness and indifference to the risk he run, luckily escaping without a wound. The book was ultimately found by the Frenchmen on the binnacle.”
Now one would assume that the French would take their prisoners immediately, but that was not the case. During the night, everything was done for the  wounded and the remaining officers were allowed to collect a few belongings. After that, the dead were handed over to the sea and finally the prisoners were distributed among the ships. Because the Junon no longer appeared sailable, so she was burned. The prisoners were brought to Brest and, after a short quarantine, taken to a hospital.
“ The commodore then called upon us and gave Conn (a Midshipman) and myself £25 apiece, and took our receipt to reimburse when we could. The act was noble and generous, as, indeed, had been all his conduct towards us since our capture.”
Jackson did not remain a prisoner for long, however, as he and two midshipmen took the opportunity to escape from a window during a transfer of prisoners. What happened next, however, is material for another story.
My point here was to show how the enemy crew was treated after a capture. And the behaviour that the French showed here was not an isolated case and by no means limited to them. This was also the case with the Spanish and the British themselves.

what was, is no more. Hero&Villain
“They have no idea who you are, do they? They believe themselves your closes confidants, yet they have no idea what you are.”
The villain stared in disbelief and to the hero’s surprise there was growing burning in there eyes.
“They don’t need to know, all that matters is that their safe. I know that they would understand my reas…”
The hero stood tall with their shoulders squared attempting to hide the tremble in their voice and the small anxious twitch in their hand.
“Understand? We were the best of the best, we were Mercyless and Death!  And if you remember I was Death.”
The Villain scoffed in distain with a bitter taste in their mouth as they glared at their ex-partner and fried turned righteous hero.
“Not even a century ago I would've fought and died for you and now I might die by your hand simply because you now think yourself righteous? And you think that if those justice blind fools would understand? You are hardly equal in the ring anymore but you have supposed me in the art of lies for you have convinced yourself of an impossibility.”
The hero deflated a couple inches as they felt the words speaking to their own worries and insecurities about their team and the trust they had in them.
“I have been that person in a long time. They died a long time ago, I laid them to rest and I am a better person always trying to do and be better.”
The villain stilled and leveled their gaze at the hero and and the hurt was replaced by anger and resentment as they spoke with brokenness the chilled the room.
“I was family, I was your chosen family! Am I nothing to you now? Is all I need do, is to wait around a couple decades till your current family leaves you or abandons you like you did me? Or till they wither and die as all others do? You have chosen a these favored pets over your eternal battle tested family.”
The hero felt a great weight across their entire being as they dropped the eye contact, it was to painful to see the now villain whom with they had once shared a bond beyond time and it was too honest and the truth of their words cut like a blade against the hero chest.
“We don’t have to lose one another! Please come with me and we can be as we once were. Give up this life and start a new one with us.”
The plea came out in a word filled blurb and altho every sailable was filled with desperate emotion and longing for centuries past the request only fueled the villains rage.
“US? You and your little team of mortal pets? I would rather suffer the loss of my soul’s match than suffer their condescension or their superiority pity.
If you won’t stand with me then you are standing against me. So what is it Hero?”
The villain watched as the hero battled their inner self for only a moment before squaring their shoulders again and the villain could see the very second their once partner and best friend chose the latter.
“Then my friend is dead and I will spend eternity seeking to avenge their death.”
With bitter resignation they both charged and for the first time in their thousands years of existence it was against one another and not side by side.

Ariel’s visited so many shipwrecks, and given her fascination with observing details and studying them in a hyper-fixative manner, I think, once she and Eric begin sailing together, she’d be able to offer input on if she thinks a certain ship design would be sustainable or if it wouldn’t be built to last. The first time they bond over this is with the shipwreck that surfaces during the climax of the film. In certain versions, Eric and Ariel keep it as a token of their victory. As they take to sailing it, Ariel would decipher which elements made it decay as quickly as it did, and they’d fix it up together. They would deduce which parts of the design made the ship sink in the first place and, from there, they’d build their ships up as strong and enduring as possible- given King Triton keeping his sea a kind and friendly one, with a sailable current.

Honestly rising sea levels won't be so bad. Imagine sailable cities. Imagine living on a quaint little seahouse on stilts and having to sail twenty minutes to the grocery store.

honestly your 'unrealistic life dream' sounds heavenly- I know why you say it's unrealistic but I really hope that you can live that out, if even just for a short period of time 💚😌
It's not the most unrealistic dream ever. My part of the world is fairly sailable and I could do it I had the money. It's more so the money aspect that's super unrealistic

only so much of the water on the gloreal home planet is sailable. Anything on the darker tint is just,,, no. They gotta invent submarines to get through those waters (too choppy, too directionless, too strong of wind). Especially if they don’t wanna mess with the surface vegetation too much anyway (ancestral phototrophic stingstars —> clantrees). Also feels safer for some. Like being in a reinforced egg.

I got to go in a sailing boat! I even got to steer! The weather was really nice – sunny and with hardly any breeze which suited me well.
It was so so so much fun. I saw a bird catch a fish and loads of cool bits of history including the remains of a huge mediaeval fish trap.
The set up was really great. There was a hoist to get in and out of boats and loads of people to help with the transfer (I think there were four people who helped me get into the boat and positioned correctly). The boats had adapted seats and they had lots of different cushions to help with positioning and pressure relief. I wish the boat had a bit more supportive seating – my head was propped up by a pillow and I was sliding around a little bit – but overall it was fine. The boat I was in had adapted steering which was still very hard for me to use when there was any hint of breeze but I did it!
The instructor I was with says they have the same kind of boat but with electric joystick controls to steer and pull the mainsheet (the rope that controls the big sail), which would let me have total control of the boat even when there’s more than a little breeze. I’m really excited to give that one a go!
I’m completely exhausted and probably going to be feeling this one for a while, but I think it was worth it which is what matters.

Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?*
This one's easy. Wolfstar. I only BroTP Remus and Sirius. I think there was too much trauma in their school years and first war to make this ship sailable. Remus hates himself so much that even if Sirius bent over backwards to love him (and Sirius is emotionally stunted as is) that I think getting over the "prank" from their fifth year, combined with the suspicion Sirius had over Remus in the first war, is just too much. Remus deserved a fresh start and that's what he got with Tonks.
The other is probably Harry/Hermione (Harmony). They're friends. When I was a teen I really wanted Harry/Hermione to be together because I identified with Hermione. Now that I'm an adult it makes so much more sense for Harry to be with Ginny because that's the kind of girl he found attractive. Hermione is cool and all but she's his sister, not his lover.
