I really think Lucifer kept the whole him vs Michael apocalypse thing close to the chest. I mean, there were followers of Azazel's plan that believed in Lucifer like a god, having never seen or spoken to him.

Basically I'm thinking the closer you were TO Lucifer, the more you knew about the plan, but only Lucifer knew the whole truth (especially the wanting to annihilate demons part). When Azazel was killed, his followers split into factions. Some of them, particularly the boyking Sam faction, had enough information to play their parts and free Lucifer.

Lilith knew her job was to trade Sam's life for Dean's soul -- to get Sam back in the game, get Dean down in Hell to break the seal John hadn't broken and away from Sam, opening a perfectly Dean-shaped hole in Sam's spiraling life. Ruby's job was to fill that hole (hah) and get Sam perfectly positioned to let Lucifer out.

Lilith had to DIE for the plan to come to fruition, and she was willing to do that to raise Lucifer. She and Ruby are religious zealouts for Lucifer.

But angels aren't on their radar for this plan, and not JUST because I think Ruby is really not expecting Dean.

We find out in Sin City, s3, they believe the coming of Lucifer, the light bringer, is their apocalypse against humans, to take Earth because humans are lesser beings and corruptible. Basically, they think their Lucifer plan is going to lead to demons' paradise on earth, because Hell is hell. 👀👀 Despite that their belief in Lucifer includes the fact that he was God's brightest angel, when Casey talks about their plans for Sam, god is an afterthought. Angels? There are probably different levels of belief in real angels, they're so far removed from the focus of their own theology as to be a sort of boogeyman story. (Obvs for the sake of this headcanon, we ignore the Doylist fact that Kripke didn't intend to bring in angels at that time.)

Being the closest to the truth of the plan, and being zealots, Lilith and Ruby believe in angels and their power. But believing and seeing are two different things. Dean returning is the proof of angels--of a god above Lucifer--and that scares the shit out of them. But they don't know it's the Michael and Lucifer show, so they think even with the angels it's just a race to freeing Lucifer.

And Dean really cramps Ruby's plans. His coming back not only pushes Ruby out of that Dean-shaped hole she's fit herself into, it reconnects Sam to other people he's been cut off from while on his crusade with Ruby. Dean makes Sam start thinking twice about using demon blood, so she has to adapt and get Sam to fiend and beg her for it. She has to keep Sam wanting to go after Lilith even though Dean is back. She has to pit Sam and Dean against each other to separate them, without it being obvious she's manipulating them, all while dodging angels and fighting demons from her side that are trying to kill her because they don't know the plan.

So if Dean hadn't been there, Ruby and Lilith would've been working together to manipulate Sam at every turn, until he finally had accepted his powers fully in order to kill Lilith.

Now, did either of them know Sam was Lucifer's vessel? 👀 Or did they just know he was the one that had to open the cage? Even if their angel lore didn't include the requirement for "consent," Lucifer would still need a meatsuit, just like the demons do.

So the big question here is: DO they know that Sam has to say yes?

Demons don't need a yes, but angels do. And if they know Lucifer was an angel, they'd probably also know angels technically need consent.

So what if the original plan was that Sam would think the blood sigil from Lilith's blood and the light of Lucifer was just Dean being freed? Because freeing a human soul from Hell like that causes cosmic catastrophe. What if the plan was for Sam to say 'yes' to his "brother" coming back to him from the grave? To not even give "the other side" a chance to know what was coming before Sam was possessed?

And then, not only would Lucifer be freed, he'd be in her boy, and he'd be hers.
