NW - I'm gonna be honest here; while I DO genuinely wanna watch this, I'm mostly watching it NOW specifically just to tick off another missing country on my Letterboxd map, specifically the Congo, which will make it my 60th country ticked off the map. But also yeah I genuinely wanna see it as well.

I continued today's 12 hour #DirectedbyWomen #FilmFeast by streaming Sambizanga (1972) directed by Sarah Maldoror on Criterion Channel. "This revolutionary bombshell by Sarah Maldoror chronicles the awakening of Angola’s independence movement. Based on a true story, SAMBIZANGA follows a young woman as she makes her way from the outskirts of Luanda toward the city’s center looking for her husband after his arrest by the Portuguese authorities—an incident that will ultimately help to ignite a national uprising. 映画『Sambizanga』を国立映画アーカイブに見にいってきた。覚書。 　問題作。アンゴラ独立運動の活動家が植民地政府に拷問殺害され、戦争開始の合図となった刑務所襲撃事件が計画されるところまでを描く。独立戦争の開始の直前にあたる1961年初頭を舞台にして、1973年に作られた劇映画という複雑な構造をもつ。監督はフランス生まれのグアドループ系フランス人サラ・マルドロール。脚本はその夫で、アンゴラ独立運動MPLAの創立メンバーだったマリオ・ピント・デ・アンドラーデと共同。サンビザンガは民族運動の発祥の地ともいえる地区の名前で、首都ルアンダの郊外なのか、沿岸地区のようだ。南アフリカにおけるソウェトのような象徴的な意味をもつ地区らしい。 　この映画の製作時点でもまだアンゴラはポルトガルの支配下にあって戦争中で、アンゴラ国内では撮影ができなかったため、亡命者が多く暮らしていた（社会主義政権だったためだろう）コンゴ人民共和国（コンゴ・ブラザヴィル）で撮影された。主な会話はポルトガル語で、一部に民族語（キンブンドゥ語か）が使われていて、その部分は字幕なし。主役の運動闘士役はアンゴラ出身の亡命者だったようだが、実はこの作品はこの男の活動家よりも、その妻が、逮捕された夫をいくつもの警察署や刑務所をまわって捜す部分が中心になっているともいえる。この妻役はカボ・ヴェルデ出身だという。カボ・ヴェルデもまた、この映画の撮影時にはポルトガル植民地だった。 　ポルトガル領はモザンビークとサン・トメ・プリンシペも含めて長く独立運動が厳しく弾圧されていたが、ポルトガル国内の政変によって1974年にポルトガルが手放すことになったという複雑な背景をもつ。 　というわけで、コンゴ・ブラザヴィルをアンゴラの首都ルアンダ、および、サンビザンガ地区に見立てて、主に亡命者たちを役者として配役して撮影されている。作劇的な滑らかさや演技の洗練はないのだが、パワフルな作品で見てよかった。ポルトガル植民地政府のポルトガル人たちの暴力性が強調されて描かれている。また、植民地政府に雇われているアンゴラ人市民（警官や役人）のアンビヴァレントな立場も描かれている。一方で、運動に肩入れしている「白人」（ポルトガル人）がいたことも描かれている。 　ルンバ的な音楽のバンドがパーティのシーンに出てくる。このバンドの名前を逃したのが悔やまれる（たしか、エンドロールに出てくる）。このパーティの場で、リーダーが刑務所襲撃計画を発表し、決行日時を宣言する。 　この作品には原作小説があって、「ドミンゴス・シャヴィエルの本当の生涯」。作者ジョゼ・ルアンディーノ・ヴィエイラはまさに劇中で白人シンパとして描かれていたような、独立運動側に立った人のようだ。アンゴラで投獄経験あり。ポルトガル生まれで幼少時に貧しい両親とともにアンゴラ移住。アフリカ人地区で育ったようで、作品もキンブンドゥ語とポルトガル後の混成言語で書いているらしい。アンゴラから追放されて、長くカボ・ヴェルデの収容所に暮らした。この時期（６０年代７０年代）に多くの作品を書いた。その後、ポルトガルに送られ、監視下で暮らした。植民地帝国ではこういう処罰の方法があったことを思い出した（キューバの独立の英雄ホセ・マルティも一時期、スペイン本国追放になった）。 　この映画の監督は2020年にcovid19で死んだが、実はこの作家はまだ生きている。読んでみたい。どんな言語で書いているのか興味がある。 　『サンビザンガ』は「蘇ったフィルムたち　チネマ・リトロバート映画祭」のプログラムの一部として上映されているが、たしかに、見事に発色が復元されていてすばらしい。 https://www.nfaj.go.jp/exhibition/cinema_ritrovato202312/#ex-79038

Movies I've logged on Letterboxd this week: Pandora's Box, Animal Crackers, Sambizanga, Ikiru, Last Year at Marienbad, and Oldboy. All considered among the greatest ever (though I didn't like the latter myself). I need to watch more just "dumb fun" stuff for variety. So, with that in mind, NW.

I mean the movie's own tagline describes it as "exactly what you think it is" so yeah I feel this is the kinda thing I need right now just for a little break from non-stop "greatest ever" films.
