#sangatsu no lion season 2
Note
Alright, here's a chance to sell me on Sangatsu no Lion
uhhhhh....
healthy and balanced relationship between male and female characters not immediately based on romantic interest
main character going through trauma and trying to deal with it in anime character fashion, failing miserably and learning a lesson
Old Men, but not in the Dilfy kind of way
gotta be honest the pacing in the first season can be off at times, the show switches between the feel good slice-of-life comedy a bit too rapidly to the serious, tense competetive life of the MC, and some characters come off as annoying before you really get to know them ( don't judge Nikaidou too harshly at first sight)
ALL that being said the second season blows all of this out of the water
it has the best written bullying Storyline in any medium ever, and I include Silent voice in this, Hina Kawamoto becomes the most solidly written girl in anime, bar none, there might be more well written women but for a character in her age group her character development in this season stands heads and shoulders above the rest
the second season spends an entire 2 or 3 episode arc on an aging shogi player wrestling with his age and mortality
all that with beautiful, and I don't use that word lightly, BEAUTIFUL artwork and animation from episode 1
it has it all, it's one of my favorites of all time and I love it dearly

We finished all the anime we were watching in the anime club.
First off, Samurai Champloo, which I liked it a lot more than Cowboy Bebop. These types of episodic anime aren’t too common, which I could appreciate. I also enjoyed the setting and the fact that it had a unique vibe (the uniqueness more than the vibes, although those were cool too). I liked the trio, how they came together and sometimes had their own little adventures, but I never came to care about any of them. I don’t think that’s a huge negative, since they were still fun to follow and the episodic nature kept things interesting, but I suppose I could’ve gotten more attached to the anime if I would’ve gotten more attached to them. The final episode, which is the one we watched today, was cool and a great way to end the series. I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend the series as a whole, but it’s worth watching.
Next up we finished Jormungand: Perfect Order. Because I decided to pay attention to the anime, I was never bored, although it’s definitely an anime I would’ve dropped before I even picked it up if I would’ve been watching it on my own. Depending on how much I value my time, watching these two seasons weren’t a complete waste. I enjoyed some characters and story lines that were introduced fairly late, and since one of the characters in the main group was Finnish, it was a fun anime to watch with a group of other Finns. HAKKAA PÄÄLLE VALMET! I liked the last 2-3 episodes with Koko revealing her master plan and Jonah finally putting his foot down. The last episode/ending was a little weird, and maybe unsatisfying for some(?), but I think it was fine.
Then we went on to Excel Saga. Ever since we started watching it, people were hyping up the last episode as something so extreme and scandalous it couldn’t be shown on TV (which is true and was a deliberate choice by the production). For some reason I interpreted this as the Japanese audience not getting a conclusion to the story, instead of the final episode being a weird extra following the conclusion that aired. It was honestly a little disappointing. I’ve pretty much forgotten what happened in episode 25 already, and episode 26 wasn’t as crazy as people made it out to be. The added nudity and sex wasn’t interesting at all? It was just there for the sake of being there, and felt out of place for most of the time. It wasn’t over the top enough for a good reaction, or then it was simply gross. I was expecting more violence too, but at least the added bleeding was funny! (What am I typing here?) Despite this, I loved the series itself. I thought it was really funny and I love following series were I have no idea what to expect next. Excel being hyper was the star of the show for me, huge props to her seiyuu Kotono Mitsuishi!
And then finally we finished Sangatsu no Lion, which was a rewatch on my part. It’s such a great series and while some people always skipped it, those who stayed seem to have appreciated it immensely! There’s this trend of anime that we watch in the club getting sequels after we watch them, no matter how old they are, and I’m hoping for 3-gatsu to follow suit, since I NEED MORE!

#Spring2022 has premiered so here's part 1 of my watchlist. Also, saw the first week anime rankings and most of my picks aren't there but that's ok. Haha! #Deaimon. Loved this one because of baking and it really reminded me of Amaama to Inazuma and Sangatsu no Lion. Kinda feels relatable, too, because Nagomu finds himself coming home, following an unsuccessful music career, to manage their Kyoto bakery which is now led by 10-year-old Itsuka. 10/10 for the baking and the feels. #KomiCantCommunicate. Najimi's growing on me despite being annoying and too in your face. But maybe this season will be different. Such chaos in this premiere. Though, torrent has become a challenge. 10/10 still. #AharensanWaHakarenai (Aharen is Indecipherable). Kanna from Kobayashi, no jk. But it feels like a fun watch because you have two oddballs who try to be friends and they actually click. One's trying to become friendlier while the other tries to be less smothering. 8/10. #ShachikuAndTheLittleBabyGhost. Well, Kobayashi's definitely here but instead of dragons, they're ghosts and the premiere is just too adorable not to keep. Think of these baby ghosts like those from Hanamaru Kindergarten or Gakuen Babysitters. 8/10. #LoveAfterWorldDomination. Gonna be candid in saying it's for the 'plot' and yooooo!!! Power Rangers in anime?? Like the full Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, and Green but they're gelato flavors. LOL Still for the plot. Haha! 8/10. #TomodachiGame. I feel it's your typical survival series with the mind games from children's games. Darkest title on my list. Definitely mental, might drop this if it gets too heavy. 7/10. #LoveAllPlay. I'm biased towards Ryman's Club as a badminton title and I'm really trying to connect with this one. But mainly it's for Hanae Natsuki as the lead. Been 2 eps in and still unsure. 7/10. #FanfareOfAdolescence. Another sports title but it's horse racing. It's one of those titles where an idol steps out of the limelight to start over. Yep, it's like Aquatope-ish but with slightly more testosterone. And that eccentric character. Hmmm. Considering 6 but making it 7/10 still. We'll see if any gets purged. Watchlist Part 2 soon! foreword from david magarshack to dead souls by nikolai gogol // chihayafuru season 3 episode 2 // my grandmother told me to tell you she’s sorry by fredrik backman // various chapters from blue period // do not say we have nothing by madeleine thien // sangatsu no lion season 2 episode 22 // quote by sue zhao @blossomfully. transcript under the cut.
1: The origin of Dead Souls, Nikolai Gogol’s greatest masterpiece, presents no difficulties to the literary historian. It is the final catastrophe that overtook it and its author that provides perhaps the most puzzling problem of literary history, for it raises the fundamental question of an author’s personal involvement in his work, of how far, that is, a creative artist’s outlook on life can impinge on the lives of his heroes without leading, as in Gogol’s case, to insanity and suicide.
2 and 3: Learn the pain of creating something. And once you’ve learned it, resolve yourself to show lenience to others.
4: People have to tell their stories, Elsa. Or they suffocate.
5: I didn’t know it was so scary to declare that you like something.
6: I understand how painful it is to make art, so I’d never wish for someone to fail.
7: Just because I’m doing what I love doesn’t mean it’s always going to be fun.
8: She said the music made her wonder, Does it alter us more to be heard, or to hear?
9: One day, Ayumu declared, “Being able to make an effort is a talent too!”
10: I sit here. I am making art because it hurts and it has to go somewhere. It hurts and I am trying to transfer it to the paper.
