Smaugust 4 - Draco saturnia
Last month I asked people to send me some of their favorite animals/plants/minerals. I'm now dragonizing the items on that list for Smaugust art prompts, attempting to draw one a day through the entire month.
This dragon is inspired by Saturnia pavonia, a moth of the British Isles. I went with a body plan inspired by dragons in European medieval art as homage to the moth's native range.

hi i heard you were normal about moths. what is the funkiest moth (open to interpretation)
I don't know a ton of moths yet (this is still a fairly new interest) but out of the ones I know... Saturnia pavonia, the small emperor moth. It has Human Eyes on it. It kinda freaked me out the first time I saw it. I love it.

Welp, I got one (1) day of mothing in, before the weather turned, and I had to pack away the trap bc high winds.
So instead of real moths from my garden, pls enjoy one of my favourite moths that I drew last year. After scanning it for that first pic, I drew in the background. It's in polychromos pencils and it's based on a female small emperor moth (Saturnia pavonia)

I had the idea to draw a moth with eye spots like a sort of mask for a while 🦋 At first I thought of making it a painting, but in the end I can't resist drawing everything with the tiniest possible pen... It's a small emperor moth (saturnia pavonia).

ṭṣip busëmisti, xüṇ glutli sabaris na'isünasü eskitis. glutli rüwa ṭṣipsin fukxitis. tse zilsü, ṇibulxoŋ kaŋka omboopho ën doanhu'apo.
Moths were created when a star fell from the sky onto earth. The star shattered into a thousand moths. To this day, lights remind them of home.
A short comic about the creation myth of moths in irkan osla! Moths, especially Saturnia Pavonia moths, are closely associated with siilika, the deity of stars, hope, and spirituality. Some fun facts about the translation: In irkan osla, some nouns are inherently plural. This applies to almost all animals, including moths. So 'ṭṣip' means moths, to get the singular you have to add a suffix 'ṭṣipwa'. The same goes for stars, 'glut', here the singular 'glutli' is used. This culture uses a dozenal number system, so a "thousand/1000" actually translates to 1728 in decimal. Anyway, hope yall like it, this is probably one of my favourite things I've ever done with a conlang tbh :3
gloss under the readmore as always! also [heres] the post i made about the writing system/romanization.
