RAFAEL CASAL - DEF POETRY JAM / OLD INSTAGRAM PHOTO (2023)

When I was 18, I flew to New York City for the first time to tape for Season 4 of Def Poetry on HBO. It was for me, the culmination of four years of performing poetry around the country as a teenager, it was my chance to show the adult poetry scene how the youth were bringin it, and was the first major validation of me as an artist outside of the Bay. I got backstage and there was Mos Def, Dave Chapelle, Alicia Keys, a young Kanye West, Common, jill Scott, Felicia rashad, and poets Id never met but seen on tv - @lemon.andersen , @maydadelvalle, @saulwilliams, Mums, @therealshihan and more. It was the first time I saw myself in the larger context of American artistry. And after a week of taping, and trying to wrap my mind around what was happening to this 18 year old me, they handed me this def poetry jacket. Went back and did two more seasons. I kept it all these years, hoping one day to frame it. I remember then thinking “if this is as far as your artistic career gets, you did it Rafa.” And I’m proud to put this on my wall now, still living and breathing as the artist I fought and continue to fight to be. Love to all my artist kinfolk out there. 20 years later. The artist hustle is the hardest hustle, a beautiful struggle, and a lifelong muscle.

Today I penned the final page for @saulwilliams graphic novel, Martyr Loser King. To say that it’s been a privilege to bring this visionary story to life is such an understatement. I’ve become a better person by way of illustrating this graphic novel. its more than just a ban on assault rifles

the shooter at the school was transgender and targeted the kids based on the christian fundamentalist religion

when law makers spread hateful rhetoric of things like banning drag shows and not providing the LBTQ+ community with

their civil liberties, people among this community could find other ways to lash out at these Jesus hate crime groups.

Crimes involving murder usually happen when sick people are willing to risk suicide to carry out their plot.  The kids paid with their lives.  Their parents

put them in a school with certain morals.  

I bet other kids don't feel safe at these extreme type private schools.  I doubt any kid feels safe at any fucking school, especially a far right christian fundamentalist academy.  fuck sake world

Over the past couple of years- namely thanks to @criterionchannel- I’ve been introduced to the concept of Afrofuturism. In cinematic terms, Afrofuturism is the incorporation of black people's history and culture in science fiction film and related genres, which are, according to Ashley Clarke, “united by one key theme: the centering of the international black experience in alternate and imagined realities, whether fiction or documentary; past or present; science fiction or straight drama". While Ryan Coogler’s #blackpanther films fit within the framework of the genre, it’s what I’ve seen away from those blockbusters- namely, films featured on Criterion Channel’s Afrofuturism collection, that have gotten me most excited about exploring the genre. Last year, @saulwilliams’s and Anisia Uzeyman’s #neptunefrost was one of my favorite films, a look at connectivity, disruption and rebellion with a rich visual look and terrific soundtrack; “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty” uses animation and live-action to explore the ways men oversimplify our views of women; and on Sunday, “Space is the Place” introduced me to the music of Sun Ra in its story of breaking systemic oppression through art, and the promise of something more. DM @saulwilliams Mostly heartbroken by news and views of misogynoir- those too tied to patriarchal standpoints to allow ever-present realities to even enter the contemplative realm as Black women are assaulted physically and virtually; the fact that so many doubt the wisdom of the ages, take pride in corrupted files, choose such pretentious yet mindless hills to die on, trust the dictates of other men who have told them that “only men” and “strong men” and “righteous men” and “real men”…; that these same patriarchal standpoints define authoritative regimes - like in Iran where men in uniform parade as uniformed men, whose very laws expose their own lack of discipline, whose dicks harden beneath religious robes at the thought of God’s head exposed, who are now so far from themselves that they do not recognize their revered poet in every protester, who would execute their own future if it meant that women Do Not Question; and the parade of hubris amongst billionaires and their devoted acolytes whose warped values form their own astrology, over-confident in blatant insecurities, whose intellectual negligence is in having never completed the thought, whose unexamined self is the goal post for men who dream in dominance, whose violent rhetoric pollutes the thought space until it is active gunfire, who wormhole insecurity for confirmation of a bruised ego, scream scripture at the top of their lungs, seek other men to share their anger, take pride in having reinvented the wheel. Theirs is the greatest poverty, for they may never learn.
