Over the past couple of years- namely thanks to @criterionchannel- I’ve been introduced to the concept of Afrofuturism. In cinematic terms, Afrofuturism is the incorporation of black people's history and culture in science fiction film and related genres, which are, according to Ashley Clarke, “united by one key theme: the centering of the international black experience in alternate and imagined realities, whether fiction or documentary; past or present; science fiction or straight drama". While Ryan Coogler’s #blackpanther films fit within the framework of the genre, it’s what I’ve seen away from those blockbusters- namely, films featured on Criterion Channel’s Afrofuturism collection, that have gotten me most excited about exploring the genre. Last year, @saulwilliams’s and Anisia Uzeyman’s #neptunefrost was one of my favorite films, a look at connectivity, disruption and rebellion with a rich visual look and terrific soundtrack; “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty” uses animation and live-action to explore the ways men oversimplify our views of women; and on Sunday, “Space is the Place” introduced me to the music of Sun Ra in its story of breaking systemic oppression through art, and the promise of something more. Neptune Frost gets new trailer, releases June 3

A new trailer has been released for Neptune Frost, which is set to release June 3, 2022.

Multi-hyphenate, multidisciplinary artist Saul Williams brings his unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that’s a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Co-directed with the Rwandan-born artist and cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman, the film takes place in the hilltops of Burundi, where a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region's natural resources – and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. Set between states of being – past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience – Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.
