Open starter

It would have been so easy to end it all then. No more Darkhold. No more mistakes. No more Scarlet Witch. There was nothing left for her, and nothing left to lose.

And yet, when the temple atop Mount Wundagore was brought down upon her by her own hand, a flare of scarlet burst through the rubble, refusing to be extinguished.

She knew not why. All that would await her was a world of fear and hatred, a life of exile, isolation and grief, driving Wanda to return to the one place she felt secure; a secluded cabin amidst a desolate orchard in an unknown location deep in the mountains, where only those she trusted most could ever find her.

With the Darkhold and its corrupting influence destroyed, the scarlet fog that once pervaded the landscape had dissipated, but it remained a barren wasteland; too soon for any signs of life to emerge. It was just one more reminder of her mistakes, and she couldn’t bear to look at it. But there was no where else she belonged. A hex, the illusion of a thriving orchard, lush green grass and clear skies, was erected once more, to make living here a little more bearable and pretending a little easier. At least until she was ready to face the world.

At present, Wanda was sat upon the steps leading up to the porch of her modest cabin, knees drawn in towards her chest and cradling a mug of tea in both hands; appreciating the evening chill of the autumn air, lonely though it was.

The city was quiet. Eerily quiet. The wind blew shreds of paper and dust across the once bustling streets that were now cracked and collapsed. The shells of cars still lined the streets where they had come to rest after the horror of that day. Proud buildings lay in ruins; a shredded flag hung from the Parliment building who's golden domed roof had collapsed in on itself. Cathedrals and mosques leveled. Wanda could almost hear the ghosts dancing around her as she walked through the city she had once called home.

Tears came to her eyes. She pulled her head covering more tightly around herself, though her dark curls still spilled out from beneath it as they had always done.

So much pain. So much horror. So much trauma. So much death. And all of it could have been avoided...

The dark monument that stood in the cleared center of Staromeské Naměstí. It paled in comparison to any sort of reparations for the families who had survived. Just a large, cold, stone.

The magic lit up her hand and another monument appeared behind it. This one had the name of every man, woman, and child who had died that day. At the bottom she wrote:

Novy Grad may be gone but lives on in our hearts and minds.

Roses and lilies bloomed around the monument. Life in a city of death.

Now that the Avengers had disbanded, she vowed to resurrect Novy Grad. She could not bring back her friends, but she could bring people back to their home. It would be better this time.
