Schlissel challah 🗝
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Baking challah in the shape of a key (schlissel meaning key in Yiddish) is an Ashkenazi tradition the Shabbat after Pesach, and is said to represent the key to the promised land. I’m usually team poppyseed but sesame seeds are traditional for schlissel challah, because they are supposed to resemble the manna we ate in the desert.
I couldn’t find a technique I liked so I just made one up- I did a 5-strand braid for the stem, and a standard 3-strand for the teeth and the head.
Hope everybody had a wonderful chag!

<1996.10.31> Slipknot - Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.
CD, Pale One Music - 000-2 [counterfeit]
Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. is the independent debut album by Slipknot, released on October 31, 1996 with a pressing of 1000 copies. The band self-distributed the CDs until June 13, 1997, when Dan Schlissel took the remaining 386 copies for distribution under his -Ismist Recordings label. Those copies received a new catalogue number (-ism CD 0032) and a very limited number of copies were unwrapped and opened to add a promotional ink stamp by the label, and later a promotional sticker. Mick Thomson and Craig Jones joined after the album's recording and as such do not appear on it. However, Jones helped with the concept and graphics of the sleeve. Although Slipknot considers the album to be a demo nowadays, its small number of copies has resulted in a lot of interest by collectors. Engineered in the winter '95-'96, Mixed during March '96, All songs written in fall '95.
Middle panel by Corn Wallace. Calligraphy by Nathan [Joey Jordison]. Sleeve graphics and concept by 133 MHZ & Kong. Sleeve layout, photo concept and photo cage created by Colsefni [Anders Colsefni], Nathan & Kong. Slipknot logo created by Nathan. CD picture distorted by Kong. CD picture, Cover photo: "Patiently Awaiting the Jigsaw Flesh" and All panel and band taken by Stefan Seskis.

🔴 Sun afternoon  - ISRAEL REALTIME - Connecting to Israel in Realtime
⭕ HAMAS ROCKET BARRAGE - CENTRAL ISRAEL
Kfar Saba, Neveh Yamin, Nir Eliyahu, Tzofit, Sdei Hemed, Even Yehuda, Udim, Beit Yehoshua, Harutzim, Yakum, Kfar Netter, Tel Itzhak, Ra'anana, Bnei Zion, Batzra, Hod HaSharon, Herzeliya - Center and Glil Yam, Herzliya - West, Kfar Shmaryahu, Ramat HaSharon, Cinema City Glilot, Gelilot - Pi Compound, Tel Aviv - Across the Yarkon, Herzeliya - Center and Glil Yam, Petach Tikva, Arsuf, Rishpon
Rocket fire FROM South GAZA.
Injury by shrapnel in Herzliya, conflicting reports of child or young man.
Reports of hit on a car (parked) and a field in Kfar Saba.
▪️ATTACK ANALYSIS.. Amit Segal: It is worth paying attention to Hamas's method: its purpose is to make us think that the IDF's action does not help in preventing rockets and therefore there is no point in it. In practice - the number of rockets and launchers dropped dramatically, and most of them were from areas where the IDF did not operate.
Doron Kadosh: the IDF is advancing in Rafah - and towards areas where there are long-range rocket launch areas that Hamas has so far not used. As the IDF advances Hamas uses these rockets to not have them captured unused. This barrage to the center does not surprise anyone in the IDF.
▪️KAPLAN PROTESTORS SAY.. the protest is expected to be successful because international bodies, including the Hague Tribunal, are helping the struggle.  Protest HQ disavows the Facebook text, saying: “The message that was distributed has nothing to do with either Kaplan or the protest headquarters. No briefing like this or in a similar spirit came out of the headquarters of the struggle. We will continue to act in order to replace the government.”
▪️IDF “THINS OUT” RAFAH OPERATION - ROCKETS FIRED SHORTLY THEREAFTER.. The IDF thins out forces in the "limited" operation east of Rafah: the Givati Brigade left early in the morning to return to Israel at the end of two weeks of activity. IDF says: for the purpose of refreshing and returning to fitness. The background: reports on the reopening of the Rafah crossing and the withdrawal of the IDF from it.
Major long range rocket fire on central Israel a few hours later.
▪️MORE ON THE NON-CAPTURE OF SOLDIERS.. Analysis of the video they published saying they had captured soldiers: the body in uniform - details show it is NOT an IDF uniform. Photos show captured weapons - the weapon shown is a CZ Scorpion Evo, which is not an IDF weapon.
▪️ECONOMY - FOOD PRICE INCREASES.. Leiman Schlissel, importer of Luaker, Mentos, Topifi and more, joins Osem, Tnuva, Strauss, Diplomat and other food companies - and raises prices next month.
▪️BEN GURION AIRPORT - EQUIPMENT FAILURE.. Radar problem with spatial aeriel imaging, leading to delays in landings, and therefore holding up take-offs as well.
⭕ Hezbollah ROCKETS at: Avivim, Yir'on, Betzet, Hanita, Rosh HaNikra, Shlomi - 3 rounds, 15+ launches in one of the rounds.
⭕ Hezbollah SUICIDE DRONES at: Idmit, Eilon, Goren, Gornot HaGalil, Hanita, Ya'ara, Arab al-Aramshe

My schlissel is a touch wonky, but I’m pretty proud of it. It’s definitely the best tasting challah I have ever made.
Shabbat shalom, loves.

🤩 What's the most meaningful comment you've ever received?
okay so i posted the first chapter of my bad buddy fic the reality is you last november, and i was trying to use the creator's notes to draw attention to israel's genocide and the fight for palestinian liberation. as part of that i linked to a post where i talked about pinkwashing. i got this comment in response from ao3 user PatPranAmargh that was both super meaningful and taught me things i hadn't known about israel's pinkwashing, so it very much sticks with me. there was a lot of lovely stuff in the comment but here's the most relevant part i hope people will read:
I’ve been an activist for the liberation of Palestine for over 10 years now, and I hope I can add more information to your story about the pinkwashing. The Israeli government used data obtained from Grindr to blackmail Palestinian gay men to work as informants or be outed to their communities. Vice made a documentary about this. Israel is known to use it’s ‘gay agenda’ as a means to further sell the idea of Israel being like other ‘progressive’ western countries to further gain sympathy and support from that same West. Meanwhile the religious Jewish leaders in Israel have always pushed back against the adoption of a gay pride or rights for queer folks. Orit Strook, one of the incoming ministers of Netanyahu said just last year that doctors should have the right to refuse the treatment of gay people out of religious beliefs. Zionist legislator Simcha Rothman, went even further and said hotel owners should be able to refuse rooms to gay groups. The Israeli government released Yishai Schlissel, an Orthodox Jew who stabbed people at the 2005 pride in Israel, unmonitored after serving 10 years, for him to just repeat the same atrocities in 2015 and yet again stab multiple people during pride and killing a 16 year old girl. Then there’s the anti black racism in Israel. How Israel admitted to have forcibly sterilised black Ethiopian women because they didn’t want to have a generation of black Jews. Look up the June 2nd riots of Ethiopian black Jews in 2019. After their version of George Floyd. Mind you , all of these things are fact checked and written about by Haaretz (one of the biggest leftist newspapers in Israel). Unlike Israel, we don’t need to make up propaganda about how horrible the government is. Their actual behaviour is horrible enough. No need to make things up. “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free 🇵🇸“ * No that doesn’t mean free from Jewish people as some of y’all have been told, because one doesn’t stop a genocide to start another one. It means free from occupation.
(just adding a note that while haaretz may bill itself as "leftist" it is still very much a zionist publication in my understanding)

Mugshot Monday - "Banned Books" heat changing coffee mug by Out of Print with Ethiopia Single Origin Light Roast by Peace Coffee
Happy Presidents' Day for those who celebrate. I have the day off so I slept in and might chill with a good book and a cup of coffee in my classic Banned Books coffee mug from Out of Print.
It's a heat changing mug with the titles of banned books redacted. The titles appear when you pour a cup of delicious hot coffee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some examples are To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, 1984 by George Orwell, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
When I was in school, it felt like the act of banning books was from "back in the old days". Literary censorship was a thing of the past, right?
Well, some states run by MAGA Republicans are bringing back book banning in unique and disturbing ways.
Florida governor Ron DeSantis has been championing this effort with his "Stop Woke Act".
It's a confusing and intentionally vague bit of legislation that "prohibits educational institutions and businesses from teaching students and employees anything that would cause anyone to 'feel guilt, anguish or any form of psychological distress' due to their race, color, sex or national origin."
One consequence is that certain books that fit the act's description of "woke" are not allowed in schools. Teachers aren't sure which books will get them disciplined, so they've been instructed to take ALL books out of the classroom.
That's really messed up.
The names of books that are banned is starting to be documented, including a list of 176 books banned in Duval County, Florida.
A few of the titles from that list are Dim Sum for Everyone! by Grace Lin, Brother Eagle, Sister Sky, by Chief Seattle and Susan Jeffers, and Black Frontiers: A History of African American Heroes in the Old West, by Lillian Schlissel.
Do you sense the vibe of what is being banned here? It's non-white cultures. Other banned topics are sexual orientation and gender identity.
Lawsuits are being filed against the bill, so here's hoping this all gets shut down sooner than later.
I tried to envision how big a new Out of Print mug would need to be to include ALL the titles of banned books in Florida. Damn. That's no joke.

Small Modular Reactor cost overruns: the same old problems haunt new nuclear in Utah - Energy Post
Small Modular Reactor cost overruns: the same old problems haunt new nuclear in Utah – Energy Post
SMR by UAMPS (Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems) and NuScale Power Corporation that shows that costs are going out of control, a persistent problem in the nuclear industry. The original target power price of $55/MWh has risen to $100 (with subsidies) and is likely to rise further by the time it’s switched on in 2030, says Schlissel. Construction costs and delays are the main causes (as…
