Life expectancy and suicide rate assumption

My research topic is if there is assumption between life expectancy and suicide rate from the Gapminden Codebook. Since there is only 2 variables I will use those in my codebook. (The unique identifier will be ’Country’.)

These two variables are both quantitative, numerical values, from different Sources.

While this is an interesting topic itself, I am curious if there is another variable which has influence on the other two, and this is the Political Score. The dataset is using a scale from -10 to 10, where -10 is the lowest score and represents the autocracy, while 10 is the highest maximum score which represents the democracy and free will according to a study from 2009.

On my own I would assume, that if the life expectancy is low, than the suicide rate would be higher.

Although there is association between the two, it may not be the one which I thought. According to https://data.oecd.org/healthstat/life-expectancy-at-birth.htm#indicator-chart although South Africa has the lowest life extectancy at birth, also they have the lowest suicide rate.

The TOP 5 lowest life expectancy countries are:

South Africa

Bulgaria

Russia

Latvia

India

These 5 countries are having the current rank on the Suicide rate (the higher the number, the lowest the rate):

South Africa – last one 43.

Bulgaria – 32.

Russia – 15.

Latvia – 6.

India – not on the list

I assumed that the lower llife expectancy will raise the suicide rate. According to my thoughts the lower the life expectancy then it means the living environment is far from ideal (war, economic issues, etc.) so the suicide might be higher than expected. In this case it is certainly not true.

If we check that which are the TOP 5 countries that have the highest life expectancy rate:

Schwitzerland

Iceland

Norway

Japan

Sweden

Comparing it to their ranks at the suicide rate:

Schwitzerland – 17.

Iceland – 12.

Norway – not on the list

Japan – 8.

Sweden – 13.

In this case I would assume that those countries who have the highest life expectancy rate have the best options to live their life the fullest. Despite this they are quite high up on the suicide rank, which has no relationship between the basic life needs and the passion to live.

According to this I would say that maybe your life expectancy at birth would be higher than in the LAST 5 countries, besides the chance to commit suicide would be also higher due to unknown reasons for me.
