#scott did u just act like Stiles in season 1?

so here’s the thing. rebooting the original 1980s teen wolf film as a series worked because they weren’t trying to be the the 1980s film. the film was a silly comedy, the series was darker (both thematically and aesthetically and seriously the lighting needed serious work but i digress) and the only real connections was a teen called scott turning into a werewolf and his friend stiles, everything else about the show established it as an thing in its own right, unconnected to the film.

this teen wolf the movie as a follow up to the series didn’t work and that’s for a number of reasons.

1. it relies way to heavily on nostalgia, the amount of throw backs and hints to the series would have worked, been endearing even, if we weren’t in the age of streaming when people could go back and rewatch the series whenever the want, and if there had been a longer gap between the series and the film. season 6 ended in 2017, my first year of university, it is now 2023, i graduated in 2020. september 2017-january 2023 isn’t even 6 years, the show is still fresh for so many people, and so many people are still discovering the series that it makes the nostalgia grabs feel cheap

2. the nogitsune is an iconic teen wolf villain, season 3 is many peoples favourite season for a reason, and while a large part of that is because of dylan and his impeccable acting as void stiles, another huge part of that is the nogitsune itself, this film does not do the nogitsune justice in the slightest. it’s another nostalgia grab, the writers basically went ‘remember your favourite season and favourite villain? well we bought the villain back’ and it sucks. flip side of that, the heavy reliability on nostalgia requires fans to remember every single detail of the series to piece things together, i spent part of the film confused until i remembered something from the series and then everything made sense.

3. none of the characters seemed to mature, every single character was making mistakes they made as teenagers, and should have learnt from, while they are now in their 30s, it felt like character development wasn’t even something the writers considered and i was so annoyed

4. fan favourites were missing. sure we’ve known for a while that dylan, arden, daniel and cody weren’t returning, but stiles is the reason that so many people got into teen wolf, isaac was a fan favourite and his exit from the show, and everyone seemingly forgetting about him, was something that the fandom never excepted. kira had the fandom divided on opinions, but that was down to the writers, kira deserved a better ending, and arden deserved better than how she was treated (100% support her decision not to come back). theo again had people divided, but by the end a lot of people had warmed to him, i think having him back would have helped at least a little bit, his snark and overall attitude contrasted perfectly with the righteousness of so many of the characters

5. the writing sucked, i’m sorry but so many of the lines felt like they were written by middle ages writers for a gen z teen show and y’all know exactly what i mean by that. teen show dialogue is so uncomfortable for people in their teens and just out of their teens to hear because it’s so unrepresentative and this had the same feel. the plot also felt simultaneously rushed and also drawn out, which is a talent in its own right, but not a good one.

6. eli. listen, eli as a character is fine but his existence creates a multitude of plot holes. he’s been alive the same amount of time that allison has been dead, who is his mother? who was derek romantically involved with in season 2/3, they discuss eli as a young child, toddler age really, but it was never seen in the show, when exactly did derek find out about his son, when did this happen?

7. stydia. 6 seasons it took for them to develop stydia. 6b was weird enough with lydia being more excited over seeing jackson than her own boyfriend and then the film we find out they broke up over a potential premonition. i get that dylan not coming back probably changed things, but to have a 6 season long slow burn to end like that, it’s disappointing and honestly lazy writing.

8. bringing characters back from the dead, at this point it’s boring. teen wolf had already done that in the series, if you’re a fan of supernatural you saw it happen basically every season. bringing dead characters back to life no longer has the affect it once had on audiences

9. derek’s death. listen, the idea of derek dying isn’t a bad plot device, and at this point not enough main or key characters have died when you think about how high stakes the plot was, however the way it was done annoyed me. having him die the same way his family did, and having is son watch it happen, it was unnecessary trauma porn.

10. off the back of point 9, the allusion to sterek with the jeep analogy. i’m a sterek shipper, always been a fan of that pairing (also a stydia shipper so frankly either way the plot went i would have been happy but no one ends happily here so fuck your jeff) it’s become a thing with long running shows that have a popular queer ship among fans to allude to a one sided love in the finale/film special and then kill the character with the one sided love. this sucks on multiple levels. it’s the worst kind of fan service, if you’re going to give me queer characters then give them to me openly, i don’t want allusions or subtext, it also plays off as writers and producers realising they weren’t inclusive enough and trying to remedy it in the worst possible way.

11. allison. listen, we love allison, she’s great. she didn’t need to be resurrected but we move on. my biggest issue is, she died when she was 17, she was then resurrected 15 years later, surely that suggests that she is still 17 while everyone around her has aged by 15 years, to then bring back scallison made me slightly uncomfortable (might just be me though)

12. harris. not only do they bring someone back from the dead. but it’s a basically forgettable character, he was only around for a few episodes and it’s frustrating that there’s zero explanation as to how he’s alive, nor is there any reason for his knowledge of the nogitsune, let alone his desire to release him despite some flimsy revenge plot

13. hikari. i get that with bringing back the nogitsune they felt that they needed a kitsune and with arden (rightfully) not coming back they needed a new kitsune, but they ruined her character basically immediately. there wasn’t time in a film to introduce or get to know her, she was a plot device necessary only for the fact they were bringing the nogitsune back, and keeping scott alive.

14. continuity? season 6 ended with the pack basically running for their lives as the existence of supernatural creatures became widely known and helping other supernatural creatures find safety. the film didn’t address that, the film made out that the existence of supernatural creatures was once again not widely known. what happened in that time? the continuity issues led to so many plot holes it’ll take multiple rewatches for me to find them all and i am not putting myself through that again.

basically this film was unnecessary, it was a badly executed cash grab banking on nostalgia to bring people back. i’m a firm believer that when it’s time you should let things go, teen wolf should have ended with 6a, 6b was the worst instalment in the series and then less than 6 years later they followed with an even worse film. it honestly felt like fanfiction and not in a good way, but what’s worse is it worked, teen wolf fans (including myself) tuned in, sure mine was from morbid curiosity but i am now still a viewer, sure reviews are bad and fans are annoyed, but they’re getting views and in the entertainment industry that’s all that matters.

anyway, can streaming services and hollywood stop remaking/rebooting/making follow ups and sequels stop. so few are done well, and frankly it’s unnecessary.

"No offence, but he totally deserved it," the stranger agrees with cheerful solemnity.

"What the hell are you doing in my home?" Chris demands. The kid is perched on a windowsill in Chris' office, as nonchalantly as if this were something he did every day, as if they were familiar.

"I was just wondering," the kid speaks softly, fond amusement sewn through with a peculiar resignation, "how you'd feel about putting down some nazis?"

Overall, Stiles is very well-known in the supernatural community. It’d be hard not to be, not with how his reputation has grown like wildfire. He knows and is on good terms with nearly all the fae that reside in the preserve, the asrai that live deep in the lake, the Ito pack, the vampire couple that lives over in Beacon Valley (they buy an ethically-sourced food supply from Stiles), as well as almost every other supernatural entity in the area. But Talia Hale doesn’t like him, and a werewolf pack tends to do what their alpha tells them to.

So it’s a definite surprise when the wards at the edge of his property trip, the tingling down his spine telling him it’s a werewolf, the lack of burning sensation letting him know there’s no hostile intent. Stiles, in his office in the second floor turret, sets down the amulet he’s packing up for Marin and moves to the large window overlooking the front of his property. He’s expecting to see an Ito packmember, even though they nearly always call in advance, and is surprised to see a man that he recognizes as Talia’s brother, Peter.

4: Tell me about one of your abandoned WIPs. Why did you abandon it?

Usually abandoning a work is because I'm not sure where to go with it. All abandoned works of mine need a rewrite for obvious reasons (a few years have passed and my writing has changed, in both style and level of skill), so... there's that. The one I'll talk about is RRT. It says 'on hiatus'; this is a lie. I'll be changing that tag soon when I feel emotionally ready to do so a;lkgaj;slkdg god damn it.

That's 3 years. It's abandoned. God damn it.

So. Where did I go wrong? Why'd I stop writing it?

Well, first off; I left it too long. I can take a year to write a chapter, but if it takes me a year to start writing a chapter, It means I've forgotten all the shit I didn't write down about where I want to go with something. My work ethic is poor and my planning skills are poorer, so.... whoops. It's something I'm working on now, but I really didn't know what I was doing back then.

Another thing Is power creep. I kind of had an Idea :tm:, but not exactly where I was going with it. Have a looksies at this comment, which I think is accurate;

'Frankly though u story is good its stiles and malia are starting to sound less like themselves and more like how u want them to be and how u view them. Espeically that scene with stiles talking about angels age when there was plenty of that in teenwolf. And again vamps are just as tough as weres and u that shadow stiles again again makes it sound like every dark xander mary sue fanfic . I can see great potential in ur story if u stay away from some of these things ive stated. Not trying to insult u.'

I was fifteen at the time of writing, so it explains some of the issues (kind of ooc, incorrect power balancing, etc.)

For example, in response to the comment;

1) Correct. I wasn't happy exactly with their characterisation in the show at the time, so I just went whatever way I wanted to. This is not really great practise, and it's made things a little awkward for me in terms of continuing the fic.

2) There was an unfortunate amount of statutory r*pe in both fandoms. Stiles was not very nice to Derek about it, and he was the victim, so canonically Stiles is a piece of shit and I'd probably slap him, but ic, the commenter's right. Nobody would give a crap about Angel being (some-hundred-and-)26, while Buffy was 16. God damn it. Hate that shit.

3) I can't say for sure whether TW's weres are the same strength as Buffy's vamps. But they're certainly not stronger than buffy herself, and I didn't keep that in mind. Whoopsie.

4) yeah, it does kind of sound like every dark!xander mary sue fic. Whoopsie.

5) That last line was very pleasant, and I made sure to thank them for it when I replied.

So, there's some reasoning. If I were to redo RRT, I'd change a few things. Probably put them in a different season, change the power levels, and I'd update the characterisation to match how I currently portray them. There are a few elements I do still like, of course. Stiles and Theo's dynamic, Stiles and Malia, Peter's general existence/presence within the fic. Making Giles act a little more responsibly after a wake-up call could've been handled better, but I do enjoy it. Buffy/Faith. Avoiding the cheating storyline. WillOz. Xandelia. Etc, etc.

'"I was supposed to get the claws for Malia, so she could depower her mother. She knew they might kill her, but didn't seem to mind all that much."

"Alright," Stiles allowed, "Say that's true. Those are the glowy blue claws, right? What do they do?"

"Steal power," Theo said. Informed. "They take power from a supernatural to give it to the supernatural who's wearing the claws."

"Alright," Stiles said. "That sounds dangerous in the wrong hands. Were you planning on using them?"

"... Yeah." Theo admitted. Properly, this time. Genuine.

(He's going to have to lie to make up for it.)

"Who were you going to maybe kill?"

"I was going to do it when it wouldn't kill them," Theo said. "A specific moon. It powers down the supernatural aside from Chimeras, since we aren't really supernatural beings in that sense."

Stiles' lips twist, mockingly amused. "Bet you like that, don't you?" He said. "Being a fake magical being that could die at any second."

"That's where you're wrong," Theo said, grinning to himself in the dark. "I'm the first Chimera. The first one to work. I'm no failure."

Stiles pulls his lips between his teeth and then - "Depends on who you ask."

Right. Theo supposes Stiles would consider Theo a failure. A failure as a friend, a failure as a brother, a son, as a person that could care about anything except himself.

But that's from Stiles' perspective. Over here, on Theo's side, the same could be said for Stiles.

(Maybe if either of them had said or done something, all of this would have turned out different. Or maybe it wouldn't, and they'd be here still, but more bitter. Maybe - in a world only Theo would imagine - It would be Stiles that was 'locked up' and Theo with the significant other who'd run away from a 'mistake' he'd made.)

(Theo's the only one who thinks it's only Theo that imagines that scenario.)

Theo sighs and looks out the window. It's late, still - really early morning - and he shakes his head.

"It's late." He says. "You should get some sleep."

Stiles didn't look all that great (in comparison to how he normally looks, which... well -), and Theo...

He's not sure. He cares, he supposes, in a roundabout way. He wants void Stiles, that's for certain, but he wants Stiles to want that, not to be possessed again. If he's tired, if he's weak, then maybe that would happen. Who knows here, who knows in a world like this one, with strange demons and vampires and all manner of creatures wandering the streets.

Theo cares. He doesn't like that, of course - but he does. They were friends once, these two. That's not easily forgotten.

(And maybe Theo thinks of him in a way that's vastly more complicated than friend. The way that means he doesn't want Malia and Stiles as a package deal, the way that means he's honestly just jealous of Scott.)

(But that's speaking in strictly maybes. For Theo... well. That wouldn't help, is all. It would hinder.)

See, some of it's salvageable. I kind of like that. Anyway! Yeah. That's it. And that's why. :)

So I watched teen wolf up through the first half of season 4 when it was airing and then I didn’t care anymore but I’m rewatching/watching it all the way through now and I have some random thoughts I need to get out!!! 1) I forgot just how smart Stiles was, holy cow!!!!!! He’s right about nearly every single thing but Scott trusts literally every other person BUT stiles and it’s so annoying!! 2) Stiles and his dad are struggling with money and Lydia claimed to be struggling with money but then just whipped $500 in cash out of her wallet in front of him?? Um??? 3) Stiles and Malia are still so weird to me but he’s such a sweetie omg 4) season 3b was and forever will be the greatest season!!! Dylan’s talent is incredible!!! Honestly that was the only season I could fully remember after 6ish years 5) once I finish watching I’m going to go through your stiles master list and I’m very excited about it

so 1), don’t even get me started on how stiles is literally so underappreciated and underrated by everyone. they just use him to portray that annoying sidekick character who is loud and mouthy but figured things out so that they have an easy way to write the team getting solutions, it sucks, he deserved better.

2) i really love lydia by the final season but let’s be honest, she was a raging materialistic bitch to start with. yet another reason why I’m CONVINCED stiles’ attraction to her was infatuation when he didn’t know her, and that when they finally became friends, they should have stayed friends because it worked so much better. stydia became fanservice and it would’ve been so much better if they’d stayed as good friends instead, because all things considered, even if she didn’t mean to, lydia did a lot of damage to stiles’ heart and really fucked up his relationship views.

3) i honestly hated stalia at first but now i like it, it was certainly never going to last because it was very physical, stiles wanted to move on from lydia and malia wanted to connect to someone and stiles was the first person there. it was never going to last, but I think it was really important for the both of them as development.

4) preach sis. it opened up so many gateways into acting for him because it just stopped him being typecast as the spastic best friend or the ‘nerd’. the only big roles he’d had up to that point were teen wolf and the internship, so all he got to play was nerdy sarcastic characters who are kinda social rejects. it opened up a whole new gateway for characters like mitch rapp, and showed off his acting skills.

ive never seen teen wolf but i read your tags and now im super curious what it stole from mbav, can you explain??

okay so for one let me preface that they come from a similar genre and both were riding the supernatural teen hype. plus shows can have similar characters and plots but sometimes it’s like….. hewwo…. also mbav did come out like a year (or two?) before teen wolf in canada and it probably takes like a year to film/write/etc.

biggest thing is definitely erica. they both have a character named erica who’s blonde and is considered lame/nerdy by others (erica jones in mbav is bullied/‘lame’ bc she’s obsessed with the parody version of twilight, dusk, and erica reyes in teen wolf is bullied/’lame’ bc she’s epilectic, way to go edgelord jeff davis– also also, was jeff trying to pass her off as latinx with that last name??? bc the actress is not but okay, get ur ‘diversity points’ LGKJKRG). they then both get the chance to get everything they ever wanted by being transformed and ~seduced~ (as like seduced as u can get on disney erkjgerg). erica jones gets to live out the vampire fantasy she’s always dreamed of and be considered fit/hot by the ppl that bullied her (explored more in the show like in the three cheers for evil ep) and gets bit by knock off vampire chad danforth. erica reyes is seduced by derek and gets the opportunity to get rid of her epilispy and the side effects. both have a moment where they’re dressed up is ~sexthy~ leather jacket goth type outfits and everyone’s like woah?!?1 !?/1. and in general try to get revenge on those who were assholes to them. (also forgot to mention that erica reyes shows up in s2 whereas this plot happens during the movie for erica jones). 

another thing is the whole ‘void’ plot. not that this is amazingly orignal or anything, and teen wolf obviously took it much farther and its ICONIC  and amazing acted but mbav fans consider that ep iconic too ergergrg. p much theres an ep in s1 of mbav called ‘double negative’ (or jilly putty in some places which…. i literally dont get WHAT DOES THAT MEAN). benny sells this camera to the head of yearbook that actualy makes an ‘evil twin’ of whoever is in the photo after it gets developed. benny ends up getting this ‘evil’ version of himself that makes trouble (in disney fashion of like wasting money by buying a go kart  and like…. being mean KGJLJRG). at the end theres a scene where they cant tell who the good and bad benny is. then theres the whole void!stiles plot in s3b where stiles is possesed and has sort of a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ version of himself around and is possesed. obviously a bigger scale but it’s also its a bit sus bc benny and stiles are v similar in some regards. (theres also a plot in the first ep of mbav s2 where there’s a green mist that possesses vampires and makes them turn against each other or something like that, which is sort of similar).

again, its v like.. tropey of the ridiculous best friend (also stiles is… smarter than benny KLGJKRGRG). but they are both super lame, awkward, try to flirt a lot, etc. theres also a whole reaccuring thing withing mbav where benny and ethan video chat each other and benny shoots a nerf gun at the camera once, and stiles like legit does the EXACT same thing in one ep ergkjelrgrg. in general ethan/benny and scott/stiles can be seen as similar but that’s kinda just regular tropey best friend type stuff. (also theres a similar scene where both ethan and stiles are researching their respective creatures but i also think thats kinda a jab at twilight erklrgjklergjerg) 

obviously things are gonna be different bc of the networks and i dont think it was exact copying, but its interesting bc a lot of ppl my age watched both and felt like the early tw seasons and mbav had somewhat similar vibes. mbav was more of a monster-of-the-week type show, but was definitely more ‘mature’ than most disney shows, they literally had ppl like mf dying and crazy shit, plus had some more ‘adult jokes’. it was v different than the stuff airing then (which was still iconic, but its less like slice of life, im a popstar type stuff, also wasn’t a multicam show).

I just rewatched episode 3 and tbh I’m frustrated all over again and need to rant in no particular order tbh this probably won’t even make sense buttttttttttttr we had such a lack of the mains that it should have been called Teen Wolf 2.0… My girl Lydia had all of 5 minutes of screen time, but that’s nothing new, I shouldn’t even expect anything more for her at this point since TW loves to give her as little screen time as possible and usually with no interaction. And now that’s Stiles is gone and Scalia is pairing up she’ll continue to get left behind or paired off with the 2.0’s (which was actually funny and I love Cory mason and Liam tbh even tho i want more mains). Yet again we had no Papa Stilinski!! 3 episodes in and he’s been around for all of 1 minute! He needs to be feeding my Stilinski appetite! Doesn’t seem like he’ll be getting much action until Stiles comes back tbh! Anddddd not that I’m completely bitter or anything buttttttttttttttt STILES HAD JUST AS MUCH SCREEN TIME AS HIM, IF NOT MORE TBH SO WHY ON EARTH DID THEY FEEL THE NEED TO TAKE HIM OUT OF THE INTRO?!?!!!‘nnnn And where is Theo?? They just randomly showed him DISSECTING A FREAKING SPIDER OUT OF HIS SKIN and then he was surrounded by I assume hunters? then he disappeared again…. All these new characters are honestly just confusing me, like I can’t keep track of who’s who?? Who is this Nolan kid again?? Didn’t he randomly just show up in episode 1 already acting weird? And how does he know something is randomly up? Were all these answered already and I just didn’t bother to pay attention?? I’m just really confused tbh! And this new counselor chick whose name I didn’t even bother to remember, how does she know about the supernatural?? Where the hell did she come from and can she go back?!! All this confusion and main character disappearances could be avoided if they didn’t bring in random characters out of no where! Like u clearly don’t even have enough screen time for your mains or your almost mains so why are these random characters coming in and then disappearing again!? Why did they kill Brett?? Out of all the characters to kill, why him?!!! BUT THEN AGAIN I DONT WANT ANYONE TO DIE! Except the counselor lady….. And Gerard….. and, no that’s it…. And tbh all of this could have been avoided if Scott hadn’t some how suddenly gotten injured like that. Like throughout 6 seasons, I think we’ve established that Scott McCall does not stay down when it comes to saving his friends so how was he, A TRUE ALPHA, suddenly wounded so badly that he couldn’t get tf off the floor and do something when someone’s life was literally at stake?! And Malia! Come on! Scott’s fine! I like you two together but get off your ass and go help poor little Liam! Your priority should be the young ones!! And where was the development in that relationship that they were talking about?? How are they suddenly talking about they’re feelings when just last episode was when they made their first googly eyes at each other!

Same anon from last night! This may be in parts bc of the limit: YES aside from the Kira thing (disaster) 6A was great. I AGREE. I would have loved to have seen Scott as the center of the Wild Hunt plotline, having him be erased would've pushed some really cool dynamics together (what do you do when the true alpha doesnt exist?!?) I like Stiles! I do! I just, wish my son Scott got way more recognition than he does and weirdly he gets thrown under the bus for Stiles’ sake a lot in fandom?

Like what show are these people watching when they say Scott is a bad friend? Scotts entire sense of self is constructed around keeping his friends & family SAFE/happy 5 makes no sense in his characterization he would never have doubted Stiles for a minute I know what you’re saying about there being a lot of plot to be pushed into just 10 eps but there is SO MUCH FILLER sometimes? A lot of my bitterness re: them is how bullshit it was to get rid of Kira and a bunch of other way interesting characters and have the gall to say

their arcs were “over” as if Kira going off into the desert to deal with her kitsune powers and then emerge LEVELED UP wasnt way more interesting than peter coming back for the hundredth time. Im excited for 6b, especially if its going to be them facing their fears and watching scott just blow everyone out of the water with his strength of character and his supportive speeches to his friends I cant wait. Im feeling very iffy about Scott/Malia bc it feels like theyre just shoehorning that

scott being erased would have been so much bc then everybody would have got to go on and on about how much he meant to them, the lack of alpha would have been felt much more keenly, and instead of stiles’ mom coming back as the ghost rider, maybe allison could have come back? i know crystal reed was sick of playing a teenager, but she obviously wasn’t opposed to acting in the show again - that would have given everyone a lot of room to explore their grief related to her. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER. imagine if kira had been there! it would have given scott a chance to allow himself to move on and be with her because the real allison would want him to be happy, all that good stuff.

anyway re: the fandom & stiles i totally feel this like i love the boy!! but it’s so disheartening to see AO3 tags like “scott is a bad friend” WRONG, scott is the best friend anyone could ask for. even in season 1 when people say he’s at his worst, like, he’s young, and for the most part the worst thing he does to stiles is blow him off a few times when he’s in over his head and make out with lydia during the full moon. scott and stiles love each other man like to say one of them is secretly just The Worst friend is so dumb. that’s why i really like reading sciles fic - ppl who ship sciles like them both and typically tend to give them equal amounts of love in their work and usually do a pretty good job of keeping them IC. sciles fic is like…so Soft and cuddly honestly i love it when i want to read filth there’s always my rarepair

highkey agree with you re: kira like im finishing up my 6A rewatch as i type this and it’s SO INSULTING to bring back theo, who can do nothing, with kira’s sword, KIRA, who COULD ABSORB the lightning if they wanted to! you know who’s arc was over? THEO’S! like i’m WAY more tired of him than peter and kate - at least they’re fun to have on screen. theo just makes me wanna commit homicide

tbh the scott/malia feels like to my posey and the girl who plays malia started dating? like idk if they did or not, but the reasont he sheriff dated natalie is bc theyre married irl, the reason allison started dating isaac was because they were dating irl, and…idk, it just feels weird, to me, and ~unexpected~ which apparently JD loves (MELISSA WAS SUPPOSED TO GET WITH THE SHERIFF, HELLO), and like so far (again, aside from kira, where is kira, you’re gonna bring back all these people and not kira or for that matter DANNY??) that’s the only part of 6B i’m side-eyeing. i dont feel like it’s gonna work. but like i said, i’m keeping my expectations low. i did not in 1 zillion years expect to EVER, EVER see derek hale again, and here he is, so like…i’m just floating along on the sheer joy of that fact. tbqh. also have confirmation that my secret rarepair is gonna interact in 6B, so i’m just gonna like. like i said. 2much excitement for words. highkey gonna die
