The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961, a three-CD box set released in 2005, marks the first time the entire Bill Evans Trio’s complete sets at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961 have been released in their entirety (outside of the twelve-disc set containing Evans’ complete Riverside recordings).

静寂から唐突に空間を支配するビル・エヴァンスのピアノもすごいけれど、テーマのおわりから登場するスコット・ラファロのベースソロの乾いた音色はあまりにも美しく、魂が奪われそうになる

街中の喧騒や騒音にまみれたカフェや列車内などに身を置くときもこれさえあれば、その場が極上の音響空間になり見慣れた風景もまるで映画のワンシーンのようにロマンティックに流れだす

こんなにもこころ躍る音楽体験を味わせてくれるとはおもっていなかったからなおさら、うれしい

コーディネートを選ばないノーム��アなデザインも好感がもてるし、眺めているだけでもほれぼれするフォルムの美しさも魅力のひとつといえる

#jazzappreciationmonth continues with a pianist on my shortlist for favorite of all time. Bill Evans’s trio work with Scott La Faro (who died far too soon) and Paul Motian redefined what a piano trio could sound like, the bass forming a central role in melody and counterpoint rather than just supporting the piano. The music they produced remains hypnotically amazing today. This live set is often considered their best, and it was my entry point, so it remains my favorite (Explorations is a close second). @sumjazz1959 introduced the #top5pianotriorecords challenge the other day, I was a little slow to the party. Because trios were a favorite of mine back in the day I have quite a few to choose from in my collection and it was very difficult to select five. So, some classics were left out. Three of my selections have been in my collection for over 40 years and one close to 35 years. The last selection I most recently received in the mail has become something I’ve been listening to a lot since it arrived. #RedGarland “It’s A Blue World” has been with me since the mid 70’s and made it through my Japanese purge I call it that I went through in the early 80’s of me trying to replace all my American bought albums with their Japanese equivalents. That became very expensive and once my son was born, I had to stop. But this has been a favorite of mine for some time featuring #PaulChambers on bass and #ArtTaylor on drums. #ChickCorea “Now He Sings, Now He Sobs” featuring #RoyHaynes on drums and #MiroslavVitous on bass. At the time of this purchase, I was a huge #ReturnToForver jazz fusion type of guy and this was a little different. #BillEvans “Sunday at the Village Vanguard” featuring #ScottLaFaro on bass and #PaulMotian on drums. Because of his work on #MilesDavis “Kind of Blue” I purchased my first copy long before I arrived in Okinawa. I do remember that this current copy taught me the value of the Japanese OBI strip, because I used to throw them away prior to this one. I learned they add value to your record. #BobbyTimmons “This Here Is Bobby Timmons” featuring #SamJone on bass and #JimmyCobb on drums. I used to have an OJC copy that I had this long scratch on it. When I got stationed in the mainland Japan in 87’ the American dollar wasn’t worth much and this album cost me close to $27 bucks. Bill Evans “Trio 64” featuring Paul Motian on drums and #GaryPeacock on bass. When I saw that #AcousticSounds was reissuing this I couldn’t wait for it’s release which I’ve had for about a month and I can’t seem to not listen to it. Well, there you have it. The trio here features Steve on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – and with a lineup like that, you can easily imagine the flowing, graceful approach to the tunes on the set – a style that’s clearly influenced by the work of Bill Evans, but always willing to take things a bit farther. I started collecting albums while in high school. I used to get on the “High Speedline” a subway system that connected the city of Camden, New Jersey and Philadelphia and head over to Philly every weekend to The Sound of Market which was on Market Street in Philly or walk down to 3rd Street Jazz and buy records. The joy was the trip back where you could open the gatefold albums and read the liner notes. I didn’t understand how to cherish my albums until I went into the Air Force and got stationed in Okinawa, Japan. I learned in Okinawa how to take care of my albums to preserve them by taking them out of those paper sleeves the American albums used to come in and placing every album into a plastic album cover. This album in particular I learned the value of the OBI strip. Prior to purchasing this album, I used to toss the OBI strips into the garbage because they were hard to keep in place when you put the plastic album cover on if you took it off. The OBI strip would slide all over the place and me being naive and not knowing any better used to toss them. But, a good friend of mine saw me about to chuck this one in the trash and schooled me on the importance of the OBI strip. Because of my affection for #BillEvans on #MilesDavis “Kind of Blue” I added this piece to my collection long before I arrived in Okinawa and played it a lot. “Gloria’s Step” was my favorite tune on the album. “Sunday at the Village Vanguard” was recorded on June 25, 1961, at the Village Vanguard in New York City featuring Evans on piano, #ScottLaFaro on bass and #PaulMotian on drums. Material on this night also produced “Waltz for Debby” which was released around 6 months later. Both albums are classics, but this is my favorite. During a typhoon that hit Okinawa during the time I was there, why I was on a typhoon evacuation mission, my apartment had a leak in the ceiling that damaged the covers of some of my albums even though I had the plastic covers on them.
