Non-Fiction is an album by American jazz pianist and composer Steve Kuhn recorded in April 1978 and released on ECM October that same year. The quartet features saxophonist Steve Slagle and rhythm section Harvie Swartz and Bob Moses.

“A lost bit of early work from pianist Steve Kuhn – recorded privately by Peter Ind in 1960, but done with a quality level that easily matches any of Kuhn’s best studio work! The trio here features Steve on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – and with a lineup like that, you can easily imagine the flowing, graceful approach to the tunes on the set – a style that’s clearly influenced by the work of Bill Evans, but always willing to take things a bit farther. There’s a quality here that’s a bit like Kuhn’s early Three Waves album, but with a sound that’s less darker overall – and although the album’s a bit short, it’s a key contribution to Kuhn’s catalog – and sits nicely next to any of his better-known trio dates.” – Dusty Groove.

The Pace Report: "At This Time......" The Steve Kuhn Interview

Pianist Steve Kuhn has been a important voice of the jazz community for over 6 decades. In addition to him being a leader he's backed the likes of Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, Chet Baker, and Sheila Jordan.

Steve's just released his latest CD "At This Time" on the Sunnyside Records​ imprint and his trio on this record features Steve Swallow on bass and Joey Baron on drums. He plays some of his original compositions as well as some standards. This record takes music fans to those great piano trio recordings by iconic pianists like Ahmad Jamal and Oscar Peterson.

I had the chance to sit down with Steve during his record release performance set at the Jazz Standard​ last week to talk about the new record, reflect on the life of Bill Evans, and the art of recording a solo piano record.
