The final form of my Legends Arceus team! I also have a Drifblim and a Luxray that are pretty high-leveled as well, but alas I can only have six on me at a time and these are the six that I want to keep around at the moment, since I would rather have pokémon that I haven’t used recently / ever on my team over those that I have used recently. (I actually haven’t trained up a Drifblim before either, but again, I only have room for six. I did train a Luxray in Brilliant Diamond, though.)
Since Legends takes place in ancient Sinnoh (a.k.a. Hisui, a.k.a. ancient Japan), I decided to use Japanese name theming this time. Because I am That Bitch™, I actually consulted a kanji dictionary to pick out kanji for each of my pokémon’s names, so each of them have meanings. (I also did the same for my protagonist, whose name is Maki, but more on her some other time.) I did this both because I’m extra, but also because it honestly helped me find names lol. Anyway, along with this, I’ve also conscripted little personalities and such for them, so without further ado, and from left to right . . .
Mokutarou (望久太郎) the Ursaluna: Just the biggest boy you ever did see, since I evolved him from an Alpha Ursaring. Mokutarou’s name is wrtten with four kanji. The first (望) can have many different meanings, but the one I picked it for is “full moon”); the second (久) means “long time; old story”; the third (太) means “plump; thick; big around”; and the fourth (郎) means “son; counter for sons”. So altogether, his name can mean something like “plump old son of the full moon” or something like that, hahaha. Mostly I wanted the full moon kanji since you can only evolve an Ursaluna during the full moon, the plump / big meaning because he is a BIG boy, and the “son” meaning because he is my son. The second kanji is just kind of there to make it read like a name.
As mentioned, I captured an Alpha Ursaring and decided that would be my Ursaluna so he would be just the biggest bear in the whole world, and at 1000+ lbs, that dream was achieved. Naturally, Mokutarou was not too jazzed about being captured at first; he has an Adamant nature and the fact that he ended up in an Ultra Ball was a serious blow to his pride. But after being shown care and affection, and after seeing that the Noble Ursaluna had accepted Maki, Mokutarou came around and is one of the more protective members of the team, both for his trainer and for the other pokémon he travels with. In particular, no harm will ever come to Kiyoshi on his watch. He will not allow it.
Hinoki (火乃紀) the Hisuian Typhlosion: My sweet bby girl whom I knew I was picking even before her final evolution was revealed to be part ghost-type, which sealed a deal that was already decided. Hinoki’s name is written with three kanji. The first (火) means “fire”; the second (乃) means “from” or can be used to denote possession; and the third (紀) means “history; chronicle; narrative”. So altogether, Hinoki’s name means “fire of history” or “history’s fire”, which is rather appropriate for a fire-type in ancient Japan, don’t you think? (I focused on fire for her because Hisuian Cyndaquil is just a fire-type, and my protagonist wouldn’t have known about the eventual ghost-typing yet.)
Hinoki is very sweet, affectionate, and tends to be a pretty happy girl. She has a Modest nature, and it shows in the sense that while she’ll never be the one to start a fight or battle (without direction), but she will be the one to finish it, but then still won’t make a big deal out of doing so. As a Cyndaquil, she loved to ride around on Maki’s shoulders or in her arms; as a Typhlosion, she still goes in for big cuddles and hugs even though her size can make that a bit of an issue. She’s just a big sweetheart, just the purest angel.
Satoru (叡) the Wyrdeer: Another biggun since this is another Alpha evolution (from Alpha Stantler this time). Satoru has just the one kanji in her name, 叡, which means “intelligence; imperial” (or imperial intelligence if you want to read it like that). Satoru can be a male or a female name, and I chose it not only for the meaning, but also because in Breath of the Wild you can find the deer-like Lord of the Mountain on Mount Satori, which in turn was named after Iwata Satoru, who in turn actually gave a lot to the Pokémon series, not the least of which being he is a huge part of the reason why Gold/Silver/Crystal were able to exist as they did (and Johto is my favorite / home region, so). So it felt fitting to name my giant, mystical deer after him.
Satoru has a Quiet nature, but also a very regal one. She may not be the same Noble Wyrdeer that the Diamond Clan serves, but she carries herself as though she should be. (And honestly, she’s much bigger than he is, so . . .) Most of the time she feels as though the antics of the others are beneath her notice; she’s aloof and doesn’t pay them much mind. But every so often one of the others can manage to get under her skin (er, fur?) and set her off into a passionate discussion (Morihito is very adept at this). Satoru is also very particular about the upkeep of her beard and demands it brushed at least twice a day, morning and night.
Kiyoshi (希吉) the Hisuian Zorua: Just the cutest little baby in the whole wide world, oh yes he is. Kiyoshi’s name is written with two kanji. The first (希) means “hope; beseech; pray”, and the second (吉) means “good luck; joy”. So altogether his name means “hope for good luck” or something along those lines. Considering the lore of Hisuian Zorua—how they fled their home due to people’s fear and hatred of them, how they died in Hisui’s tough climate and were reborn as ghosts—I figured his name felt appropriate, in that his species came to Hisui looking for a better life (hoping, praying for good luck and joy), and even though he had to be reborn as a ghost-type, he can still get that good luck and joy now, with a found family.
Kiyoshi has a Rash nature; he attacks first and asks questions later, but this is out of defensive aggression more than anything. He’s been alone ever since he can remember; he doesn’t know what happened to his mother Zoroark or any siblings he might have had. And when he’s first captured from that icy cave, he’s terrified. But as he comes to realize he’s safe with a new family, and begins to relax, a more playful side of him comes out and he enjoys being treated as the baby of the group. Kiyoshi could evolve at any time, but chooses not to, and there’s no pressure for him to, either. As mentioned above, Mokutarou is very protective of him, and Morihito has also accepted Kiyoshi as a pup, too. He loves his new family.
Morihito (守仁) the HIsuian Growlithe: The last of the big ones, since Morihito, too, is an Alpha. The first kanji in Morihito’s name, 守, means “guard; protect; defend”. The second, 仁, means “humanity; virtue; benevolence.” So altogether, Morihito’s name means something like “protector of virtue” or “protector of humanity.” Something along those lines.
Morihito has a Brave nature, and takes two things very seriously: his pride as a Growlithe, and the protection of his pack. Although Morihito had great respect for Lord Arcanine (as well as the new Lord Arcanine), he has no desire to be an Arcanine himself, feeling that he doesn’t have to evolve to measure up to that standard of greatness, especially since he’s an Alpha Pokémon. (His opinion on evolution is also why Kiyoshi won’t evolve; Kiyoshi greatly looks up to Morihito). Aside from this though, Morihito can be very playful and is sometimes not aware of how much strength is in his size. It’s not uncommon for him to try to sit on Maki’s lap, or roughhouse a little too much with Kiyoshi or Kaiji. (Also, he likes to see what boundaries he can push with Satoru. Her head is in the clouds? Well he’s part rock-type, he’ll bring her back down to earth!!)
Kaiji (海久) the Vaporeon: My water-type of choice for this game, since I haven’t used a Vaporeon since my very much beloved Vaporeon back in Gen I, and I wanted to give it another go-round, something I have not regretted one bit. Kaiji’s name is written with two kanji: 海 meaning “sea; ocean” and 久 meaning “long time; old story” — and yes, it was also used in Mokutarou’s name above, but kanji can be read differently (both in terms of meaning and pronunciation) depending on the kanji around them. Kanji is wild, lol. But altogether, Kaiji’s name can be read as “old story of the sea.”
Kaiji has an Adamant nature, and that’s plain to see whether he is himself or whether he is melted into water. You don’t tell Kaiji what he’s going to do. Kaiji also doesn’t tell you what he’s going to do. He just does it. If you try to force him to do something, he will absolutely melt into a liquid state and good luck getting him to budge then. Kaiji is happiest when he is in water of some kind (even just falling rain), and very much enjoys taking naps. He strongly dislikes when Morihito tries to roughhouse with him (and will spray water in Morihito’s face to get him to stop), but he does like when people gush over how pretty he is. When he’s feeling particularly generous, he hunts Remoraid or Starly and leaves their corpses as presents for Maki. She does not appreciate this.
And that’s the main team! I was this extra for the other pokémon I temporarily used (my Drifblim Fuusenshi, my Luxray Denji, etc), but I’ll get into them some other time if anyone’s interested. Likewise, I have a whole backstory and everything for my protagonist Maki (whose name is written with the kanji 真紀), but again, maybe I’ll talk about her some other time. All in all though, this is my primary team in Legends Arceus, and I’m very attached to them. Fingers-crossed this game ends with changing the future in some way so these evolutions / forms can make a comeback in future games. (Don’t spoil for me if you’ve already completed the main story, I’m procrastinating the main story on purpose to make the game last longer. We’ll get there when we get there etc.)

“Gee Scrawlers, why don’t you ever use your Master Balls, even on battles that take you multiple resets to catch?”

THIS IS WHY. SHINY LEGENDARY, FIRST ENCOUNTER, AND I HAD A MASTER BALL HANDY TO NOT RISK THAT SHIT. THIS RIGHT HERE IS WHY YOU NEVER USE YOUR MASTER BALLS UNTIL YOU ENCOUNTER A POKEMON YOU CAN’T RISK FAINTING / GETTING AWAY.

Dex Completion Help
I’m at the point in Sword where I can no longer complete the Dex without assistance from others, i.e., I need some Shield exclusives and also trade evolutions. The ones I still need are as follows:
Shield Exclusives:
Lotad
Spritzee
Croagunk
Solosis
Vullaby
Sableye
Oranguru
Lunatone
Dracovish
Arctovish
Goomy
Zamazenta (will do a trade-trade back with Zacian for this one)
I’m willing to do trade-trade backs with all of them, although some of them I also still need the evolutions for (such as the evolutions for Lotad, Spritzee, etc), so it’d be easiest if I could keep those.
Trade Evolutions:
Milotic
Gigalith
Slurpuff
Rhyperior
Escavalier
Accelgor
Trevenant
I have all the pre-evolutions and items required for these (except for the Whipped Dream for Slurpuff, but I’ll have that soon), as well as both Karrablast and Shelmet for Accelgor and Escavalier, should anyone else need those evolutions as well. I just need to be able to evolve them, and that unfortunately requires trading.
So if anyone could help me out, that would be great! I’m going to bed very soon so I don’t think I’ll be able to do this tonight, but I’ll be available tomorrow evening so we can set up a time then if you’re willing. I can grab any Sword exclusives necessary (if I don’t already have them boxed), so if there’s anything you need help with, let me know that as well.
Thanks!!

I finished both the main story and the postgame story of Pokémon Sword, so I figure I’ll type up a little informal review on it, if for nothing else than to have my thoughts on record.
Overall: I liked it, and think despite Game Freak’s failings, it was an improvement over both the Kalos and the Alola games.
First, just from a gameplay standpoint: While I’m still upset about the National Dex being axed, as well as upset over Mega Evolution being axed, and mad about Mimikyu being nerfed even though I knew last gen it would happen, overall gameplay improved VASTLY in this game when compared to the Alola games especially. True, your outfit is still ugly when you’re on your bike, but the music doesn’t change to something hideous, and you can use the bike to maneuver over both land and water. The curry minigame in Camp might be a bit finicky, and the play options are limited (+ I miss being able to pet my pokémon), but Camp lets all of your pokémon out at once, and they can interact with each other, and I think that’s really great. Additionally, I like the immersion of being on a journey and being able to set up camp and cook. It’s nice. Customization is far better in this game than in previous games (even if I found the perfect outfit right at the start and never changed it---though hell, that’s a bonus), I like controlling everything with the buttons rather than using a touch screen, the wild area is a lot of fun to run around in, I like having pokémon visible on the overworld . . . overall, I just find it to be an improvement over the Alola games in terms of gameplay in virtually every way. At least for me, the Alola games were not very much fun to play. I loathed the Ride music and the fact that I was using someone else’s pokémon instead of my own (and as a result had to walk everywhere since they didn’t give me a goddamn bike), the customization options were really lacking, the level balance was horrible and so grinding was an absolute chore, Refresh was annoying because your pokémon were dirty after basically every single goddamn battle and you could only tidy one of them up at a time, and so on and so forth. The Galar games aren’t perfect, but in terms of gameplay they’re a huge improvement over Gen VII and that makes me breathe a sigh of relief at least, because the most important thing about video games is that they have to be fun to play. If you’re not having fun because the mechanics are bad, there’s a problem.
As far as the story goes, it definitely had its issues, most notably in the fact that Chairman Rose’s goals were never properly explained, the cover legendaries didn’t really factor in much until the postgame, and the fact that Chairman Rose and Oleana were evil at all felt more like a “well we have to have some evil organization in here huh” than anything else---like Game Freak was trying to adhere to tradition rather than writing a villain-based story because they genuinely wanted to write one. The whole situation surrounding Macro Cosmos (a company that I keep forgetting the name of because it wasn’t mentioned until the end) makes a bit more sense to me now than when I originally finished due to reading someone else’s explanation of how Rose was a PokéVillain who had already won by the time the story starts, given that he owns and controls everything in Galar (literally, he controls the very energy they need to keep the lights on and their houses warm), and so what he does is more about maintaining that (thousands of years into the future?) than anything else. Which I get, but . . . it still makes his actual actions and motivations feel weak and poorly explained.
But despite that, as well as a few other flaws (the annoying enemy characters in the postgame, the fact that Marnie was TRAGICALLY underused), I actually did enjoy it. Despite my disdain for organized sports in real life, I liked that the Gym Challenge was set up as a tournament in which your rivals participated (and that there were many other participants, too) because finally it felt like there was a reason to go after the badges, versus doing it just because the Gyms were there and you wanted to become Champion for no reason. The fact that more and more NPCs started to take notice of you as you progressed as well is another thing I liked. Although I hated that we couldn’t customize the Gym uniform (it’s so ugly!!), I did like having a personal number (mine is 494---Victini’s National Dex number), as well as the fact that it was yet another way for the fans in the game to identify you. Not only that, but having your rivals be fellow competitors in the Gym Challenge was also a nice touch. Sure, Hop was yet another hometown friend, but the others were just fellow competitors that took notice of you, and I really enjoyed that.
Speaking of Hop and the other rivals, the characters were, I felt, by and large another improvement over Kalos and Alola games. Aside from the antagonists in the postgame (who were poorly designed and also terribly annoying), as well as Gym Leader Gordie, there aren’t any characters that I really disliked, and in fact, I found the development for most of the major ones (in particular Sonia, Bede, and even Hop) to be pretty good.
A bit more detail on that:
Sonia: Honestly, Sonia is probably my favorite character from these games (although Marnie is a close second). I am absolutely surprised by her and how much I came to love her considering I wasn’t too interested in her before the game was actually in my hands. Sonia is set up as being a twenty-something-year-old who fancies herself her grandmother’s assistant, but honestly is just kind of languishing at the beginning of the game and doesn’t really have a clear goal---to the point where her grandmother boots her out and makes her travel the region exploring the history to learn more about the Dynamax phenomenon. (And yes, Sonia is definitely in her twenties; both she and Leon refer to themselves as adults, and these games were created in Japan, where the age of adulthood is 20. So while we don’t know their exact age, we know they’re at least over 20.) Sonia is a little miffed about this at first, but as the story goes on she becomes more and more interested in and passionate about her studies, which culminates in Professor Magnolia passing the lab coat over to her. And it was at that point I realized: Although Professor Magnolia is the official professor at the start of the game, the fact that she has absolutely no impact on the game whatsoever (or at least very minimal impact) is because the real professor of the game is Sonia. We interact with her regularly, she helps compile information about what’s going on with regards to the game’s main plot, she guides and influences both the player character and Hop, and ultimately she comes to realize her own goal and dreams. The fact that an adult character in these games got to have an arc like this---one where she wasn’t sure what to do with herself at first, but came to find her own dream and take over the lab---was absolutely wonderful to me, an adult player. Sonia was definitely a refreshing character for the series and I was so, so proud of her when she finally got her lab coat, found her goal, and started living her best life. Sonia’s brilliant and I’m a huge fan.
Hop: On a personal, personality-level, I find Hop to be kind of annoying. He’s the type of person who would wear me out quickly in real life, and I honestly would have preferred if the primary rival was Marnie instead of him (since I feel him eating up so much screentime is part of why Marnie got shafted---but more on that later). But that said, I feel like Hop was Hau done right, that his character arc was well-written, and I love that we see him finally step out of the shadows and find his own path at the end of the postgame story. Hop, like Hau, has a famous relative that he looks up to and wants to surpass one day. But Hop, unlike Hau, also takes his training seriously from the start, struggles and shifts through various strategies as he tries to figure out what it is that he should do rather than just sticking to the same thing and hoping that it produces a different result, and ultimately concludes that he can do something different with his life, that he can change fields and make a name for himself his own way, without having to live up to expectations of what others think of him, or what his brother has done. While Hop resembles past rivals in the series in various ways (e.g. Barry’s impatience, Hau’s famous relative), he also sets himself apart by having a clear and defined character growth arc, culminating in his capture of the other mascot legendary and his newly appointed position as Sonia’s research assistant. I’m not personally a big fan of Hop’s, but as a character I think he was well done and I don’t dislike him either. At the very least, he easily tramples all of Kalos’ rivals (not that that’s hard, since the Kalos Friend Group is the most annoying set of rivals the series has ever seen), and I like him more than Hau as well. (The fact that Hop doesn’t delegitimize child abuse the way Hau does in USUM is a big point in his favor.)
Bede: On the other hand, I love everything about this little shithead. I love that we finally, FINALLY have a jerkass rival for the first time since Gen IV. I love that even after his character development (which he gets!) he doesn’t stop being a jerkass, he just becomes slightly less of one. (Very slightly.) While it was touched upon only a little, I like that the reason why he’s such a little asshole is because of how Rose and Oleana were using him (Oleana is the one that gets blamed, but it was Rose who gave Bede his first pokémon and endorsed him, and then later in Hulbury acted like he didn’t even know who Bede was, thereby implying that Bede feels that he has to work extra hard to gain Rose’s approval and attention), and that once he was taken in by a good guardian (Opal), he improved not only as a trainer, but as a person. It was so great to see Bede finally happy near the end of the game, once Opal took him in, and also great that even though he was a little shit to everyone around him, he also treated his pokémon well (and thus wasn’t a “he’s an asshole so he uses his pokémon as tools!” type). Bede’s great. I love Bede.
Marnie: I also love Marnie, though as I’ve said numerous times, she was critically underused. Despite the fact that her older brother is a Gym Leader, Marnie has pretty much no impact on the plot, barely shows up at all, doesn’t appear in the postgame story at all (even though she’s a Gym Leader now!), and overall feels like she’s just sort of . . . there. This frustrates me not only because I love what little we do see of her (the fact that she has a south London accent is already a huge plus in her favor, along with her design, battle music, and overall character), but because I feel this happens all-too often with female rivals in Pokémon games. Granted, it’s not like we have a surplus; aside from the opposite-gender player rivals, the only dedicated female rivals we have in the entire series apart from Marnie are Bianca and Shauna (because given that Lillie doesn’t battle for the majority of the story, she does not count as a rival). Shauna, like all the rivals in XY, has an ineffective, weak team and doesn’t really accomplish anything at any point. And while Bianca’s team is fantastic and she does end up becoming Professor Juniper’s assistant in the second game, in the first game she’s sidelined after her Munna gets stolen and spends the rest of the game with her spirit broken as a result of it (which, IMO, is the one being flaw in BW’s otherwise excellent storytelling). So to get another dedicated female rival, only to have her barely be involved in the plot at all and not really go through any meaningful development is incredibly disappointing. If there is a follow-up game to the Galar games, I hope Marnie gets more to do. (And as a side note, Team Yell is in a similar situation to Macro Cosmos; it honestly feels like they only exist because Game Freak feels they have to have an “evil team” at this point, much like Skull in the last gen.)
This is long, and also it’s almost 3am and I’m tired, so rather than typing up blurbs for all the other characters, I’ll just give short lists:
Other characters I loved: Nessa, Kabu, Bea, Opal, Raihan
Characters that were OK but had certain things about them that were off-putting to me: Leon, Chairman Rose, Oleana
Characters I’m completely ambivalent about: Professor Magnolia, Milo
Characters I hated: Gordie, the Sword and Shield brothers I’m not even going to bother to remember their names because they were that fucking stupid
And that’s it, I’m going to go see if I can sleep now.

Finally. I’ve FINALLY accomplished this. I’ve FINALLY gotten my One True Team™ to where I want them to be, again.
Tumblr media
Okay, so the story here is . . .
As some of you may know, it recently occurred to me that I wanted to change my charizard’s name to Nova, because I felt it was a better name, particularly since it wasn’t a fandom reference. However, I encountered a problem: Since my charizard was originally from X Version, the Name Rater in Alola wouldn’t change the nickname because he didn’t realize that I was the original trainer. Moreover, because Game Freak is ridiculous, I couldn’t send my charizard back to Kalos despite the fact that he didn’t have any Alola-specific moves. (Literally, there’s no reason for them to not just have a little check in Bank that makes sure you’re not sending anything game breaking back to a previous generation. This is honestly Game Freak being ridiculous for no good reason.) At that point, I felt rather stuck. Would I have to just stick with the names I already had, and be unsatisfied? Or would I have to . . . start again . . . from scratch . . .
For a moment, dear readers, I felt a moment of despair. And then . . . and then I remembered this.
In case you don’t want to click, that link goes to a post that displays my Adamant Charmander Army. My Adamant Charmander Army is dozens of PC boxes filled with 300+ adamant charmander from when I was trying to hatch a 6 IV adamant charmander (which I eventually succeeded in doing, but not until I had hatched 300+ eggs). Originally I was going to send all the charmander out into the Wonder Trade, but then I felt bad, because it felt like I was hatching them just to throw them away. So I figured I’d give them a home on the Pelago instead. (I haven’t actually gotten around to doing this yet, since that would require transferring them all to one of the Alola games, but I’ll do it eventually.)
Anyway, upon remembering that I had over 300 adamant charmander to choose from, a good number of whom had at least 5 perfect IVs, I decided that perhaps training one from scratch wouldn’t be so impossible after all. I went back to X Version, found a 5 IV girl with a suitable characteristic (Mischievous), and then set to work raising her to Lvl 100, both so that she’d fit in with the rest of the One True Team™, and also so that I could Hyper Train the one imperfect stat. (And yeah, I decided to go with a girl since I was starting over, given that Nova is something of a feminine name.)
It felt like. It took. FOREVER.
Part of this is my fault; I forgot that the Lucky Egg is a thing and as such didn’t use it like an idiot. But it’s also partially due to the fact that I haven’t had to level grind in a while, and I was impatient because I don’t like using the 3DS anymore, and I couldn’t use most of my team and all I had was an old charizard and umbreon (both Lvl 100, but no perfect IVs between them), and so on and so forth. But, with the powers of Lvl 3 EXP O-Power and Restaurant Le Wow combined, I managed to get Nova to Lvl 100. I then transferred her to Ultra Sun so I could teach her Thunder Punch via a Move Tutor, transferred her to Sun to be Hyper Trained, and then back to Ultra Sun where she belongs, and was finally, finally done. (For those wondering, she’s a ‘Zard X, and the moveset I have for her is Dragon Claw, Flare Blitz, Thunder Punch, and Roost. She’s going to kick so much ass and take so many names, you guys.)
All of that said, I also decided to change my mimikyu’s name. To be honest, Willow was always a placeholder name; I knew that I wanted a feminine name that touched on fae lore, but I couldn’t think of a fitting one at the time, so I settled for Willow (from the will-o-the-wisp) until I thought of something better. And now I have! Faeth works because:
Is a pretty and feminine name
Spelling includes “fae” --- so it’s punny, but it works
Faeth can have some faith that I love and won’t abandon her
Also, while I never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I do know that one of the slayers in the show was named Faith, and that’s kind of fitting considering the fact that my Faeth slays all who stand before her with little to no effort. Anyway, this required sending Faeth back to Sun Version temporarily, but thank god Game Freak actually let me do that. Praise Arceus.
ANYWAY, that’s my update for the time being. This is my new canon. I love my One True Team™ and always will, thank you and goodnight.
