From Dream to Reality: a Blueprint for Building San Diego FC's Expansion Roster
As I look forward to San Diego FC's 2025 debut season, I played the part of armchair GM to put together their inaugural roster. How did I do?
Introduction New MLS outfit San Diego FC will kick off in 2025, becoming the 30th team in the league. They will look to follow in the footsteps of recent expansion success story St. Louis City. In their first season, St. Louis shattered the glass ceiling on expansion team standards, by not only reaching the playoffs, but topping the western conference table in the process. They did this…

AHAHAHHAH wow you’re a full on fan, huh? i’m glad you enjoyed it. tbh if it’s made well, i’m sure it’ll be good. i’ve just accepted that movies can never be like books. they require less detail and it’ll never live up to the source material. but on its own… movies based on books are mostly pretty good.
oh also omg i just got reminded that during high school a couple friends and i organised a hunger games themed escape room. and there were multiple levels so each room was a different district and we had sound effects and jumpscares bc why not jshshshs
i feel like you would’ve enjoyed that HAHAH
omg im sorry this is so late i seriously never see when i get asks 😭
I am SUCH a fan abhfidnf i reread the books every fall, idk why it just feels like a good time sdfc and omg i agree you really have to take movies as like a fanfiction to the book because it just never comes across the same, im usually pretty ok with book movies, i think the only one i truly have hated was the darkest minds, because it's such an underrated book series (it was like mid ya dystopian era so it got lost with all the garbage lol) but the movie chnged SO much that it was jjust literally a different story and i was so mad because i was like finally ppl will see why this one is so good. womp womp. That escape rroom sound so insanely cool, i would have absolutely lovedddd to do it, it sounds like such a crazy amount of effort i would have been over the moon to have seen it lol

Fantastic Mr. Fox (1970)

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a children's novel, written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Donald Chaffin, although different editions have also featured artwork by Jill Bennett, Tony Ross, and Quentin Blake. The story follows Mr. Fox, who is, of course, a fox.
Mr.Fox has been stealing food from nearby farmers for some time. However, when he's identified as a thief, the farmers join forces to ambush him. As a result, he is trapped, and must come up with a plot to save himself, his family, and the other local animals. With the help of his four children, his friend Badger, and his sharp wit, it is, of course, only a matter of time before he succeeds.

In 2009, a stop-motion movie adaptation was released. The film was directed by Wes Anderson and co-written by him and Noah Baumbach. It features a cast of stars (including George Clooney as the mastermind fox himself, Meryl Streep as his wife, and Bill Murray as his friend, Badger) a soundtrack with a mix of original songs composed by Alexandre Desplate and a few pop songs by the likes of The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Burl Ives, and others.
The movie remains mostly faithful to the story, with a few differences, such as Mr. Fox's secrecy and their having, instead of four children, one child and a nephew. It also focuses much more on his relationship with his wife and slightly alters the ending. The movie was praised for its animation, quirkiness, and wit, and was nominated for several awards.
Some that it won were the Annie Award for Writing in a Feature Production (2010), two NYFCC awards for Best Animated Film and Best Actor (2009), and two awards for Best Adapted Screenplay from SDFCS and SFBAFCC (2009).
Less furry-centric, but relevant, content under the readmore.

In 1998, a three-act opera form of the story appeared on stage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion as well. It was originally composed by Tobias Picker, with the help of Donald Sturrock's writing. In 2010, an abridged version was released with reduced orchestration, and in 2011, a full-length version with the same was released.
A performance of it was recorded and released on Albany Records in 2019, earning the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording. It was commissioned by the Roald Dahl Foundation, and seems to follow the original story fairly loyally.

In 2016, a stage musical was also premiered at the Nuffield Theater in Southampton. Adapted by Sam Holcroft, with music written by Arthur Davill and lyrics written by those two with the help of Darren Clark and Al Muriel, the musical seemingly is still touring, with tickets available for a 2024 showing. Once again, the show seems faithful to the original tale.

San Diego FC: Behind the Flow Follows the Beginnings and High Hopes of New Team
The League has come a long way since then. It comprises 30 teams, with 27 in the United States and 3 in Canada, and is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation. In 2022, with an average attendance of over 21,000 per game, MLS had the fourth-highest average attendance of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, behind the National Football League (NFL) with over 69,000 fans per game, Major League Baseball (MLB) with over 26,000 fans per game, and the Canadian Football League (CFL) with over 21,700 fans per game. Two years later, MLS was ranked second in the world’s most attended soccer leagues, only trailing the English Premier League.
Adrian Garcia-Marquez (AGM) is an Emmy-winning multi-sport play-by-play announcer, narrator, and host. Garcia-Márquez currently serves as the English language voice of San Diego FC on iHeartMedia’s San Diego Sports 760 AM and the top Spanish language announcer for the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers. He is also the lead play-by-play announcer for Fox Deportes Major League Baseball, where he’s called 11 World Series and 16 All-Star games. Additionally, Garcia-Marquez has called three Super Bowls and was also the TV voice of the Los Angeles Lakers.
San Diego FC: Behind the Flow debuted as a 10-episode documentary podcast giving an inside look at what it takes to establish a major sports team in a competitive market. Following the documentary episodes, the podcast will transition to a sports talk show covering the remainder of SDFC’s inaugural MLS season.

“Sports fans have proven they’re hungry for behind-the-scenes insights into their favorite team that go beyond field performance, so it felt like a perfect opportunity to partner with San Diego FC and MLS to create a first-of-its-kind show that blends documentary and sports talk to push the boundary of what live coverage of a team can look like,” said Will Pearson, President of iHeartPodcasts. “SDFC has the potential to become one of the MLS’s most backed teams, and we’re excited to help broaden and engage their audience through iHeart’s industry-leading reach.”
The first part of the show will document the creation of SDFC, from its inception to its first game, capturing the challenges and triumphs of building a team, fan base, and club identity from scratch. It will also spotlight SDFC’s pioneering mixed-gender Right to Dream (RTD) academy and its mission to identify top talent, with the show going into Mexico, where SDFC scouts met young players hoping for a spot. Midway through its inaugural season, SDFC sits second in the MLS Western Conference standings with 30 points from 17 matches — an early testament to the Club’s ambitious vision and competitive foundation as it settles into the MLS landscape.

San Diego FC is Major League Soccer’s 30th Club, competing in its inaugural season at Snapdragon Stadium in 2025. The Club is jointly owned by Sir Mohamed Mansour, an entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist with global ties in the sport, and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, the first Native American tribe with a significant ownership stake in a men’s professional team across all major sports leagues. Manny Machado, San Diego’s perennial MLB All-Star, is an investor in the Club, alongside other high-profile partners including World Cup champion Juan Mata, Emmy-nominated actress and producer Issa Rae, and Grammy Award-winning artist Tems.
San Diego FC is a proud member of the Right to Dream community, a global network of youth academies and professional football clubs. San Diego FC’s stated vision is to become the epicenter of football excellence and innovation in North America.
“We are thrilled to partner with iHeartPodcasts and COPA90 to bring the incredible story of San Diego FC to life in this groundbreaking podcast,” said Jake Warren, CEO of Message Heard. “This project is not only a first in podcasting, but it’s a testament to the power of audio to connect fans with the heart and soul of a club. We believe this immersive experience will set a new standard for sports storytelling and deepen the relationship between SDFC, its passionate supporters, and the wider community.”
I found the series fascinating, not just because I am an MLS fan, but also because the documentary illustrates how a new team in any professional sport builds its foundation from the ground up. There will be important questions to answer. Will we have a mascot? What will we charge for a beer? How much can we charge for parking? And, oh yeah, maybe we should sign some players who know something about soccer or football.
