i just feel so displaced and alienated by all of the queer community love for astrology and new age-y stuff & sometimes i swear i could scream if i read another post where someone talks about mercury retrograde or femme magic or scorpio moons or taurus season or what-the-fuck-ever, but there is just no escape it is everywhere & i do appreciate a lot of these people who believe in it, i do, but this is really annoying
i guess this is a complex product of:
being raised by a somewhat hardcore atheist white mother and a religion-critical indian father, both of them scientists;
growing up in india where a strong belief in astrology can go hand-in-hand with repressive ideologies including hindutva (a very cursory google search reveals this link, which upon another cursory glance also has problems, but it is something / does remind me a little bit of things that i need to read up on, like the connections between astrology and “vedic science” i.e. hindutva-washed “science”), where people tried to get astrology to be considered and studied as a science, to the detriment of various education movements;
being spiritually and religiously skeptical and unknown myself with at least some amount of scientific temper however dismal; and
always being suspicious of popular trends, even in marginalized communities
i don’t know man i just really don’t wanna hear about how to magically “manifest” your dreams / make them come true blah blah blah. it’s just a lot and i understand that a lot of queers, especially sdqtpoc, aren’t privileged in any of these beliefs at all, but i really wish there was more space to not be into this stuff, to just be an anxious and deeply politically bitter wreck instead
eta: it can be better when it’s just people who do it for fun and silliness, because at least then i don’t have to deal with an entire actual belief system around this that is so eyeroll-inducingly unscientific. yeah i get that science can be fucking oppressive, believe me, but this is too much
eta 2: yah believe me i know science and religion / spirituality can coexist; i.e. a debate i was constantly encountering my entire childhood and adolescence (and hence have been developing my feelings about all throughout and since, and yeah a lot of that has been learning about how fucked up atheism can be too); but i also do think that there is a significant lack of scientific temper exhibited when people actually, seriously, believe in astrology

an idea for activists
seek out people who are disabled and ask us what we think needs to happen. bring us home cooked food and interview us about our lives and our visions for activism. visit folks in institutions and ask about solutions.
seek out folks who are isolated and come to us. we are right here. in our houses, institutions, and on the street. why keep expecting us to come to you? why expect us to travel and visit the enabled world when we all know it is designed to keep us out?
what do you think might change about your activism if you made a point to support and listen to the most isolated?

Sins Invalid: An Unashamed Claim to Beauty in the Face of Invisibility
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pQjey5Mmuw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gjP0Wtlrpg
From the website:
Sin’s Invalid is a performance project on disability and sexuality that incubates and celebrates artists with disabilities, centralizing artists of color and gender variant artists as communities who have been historically marginalized from social discourse.
Sins Invalid recognizes that we will be liberated as whole beings—as disabled, as queer, as brown, as black, as gender non-conforming, as trans, as women, as men, as non-binary gendered— we are far greater whole than partitioned. We recognize that our allies emerge from many communities and that demographic identity alone does not determine one's commitment to liberation.Sins Invalid is committed to social and economic justice for all people with disabilities – in lockdowns, in shelters, on the streets, visibly disabled, invisibly disabled, sensory minority, environmentally injured, psychiatric survivors – moving beyond individual legal rights to collective human rights.Our stories, imbedded in analysis, offer paths from identity politics to unity amongst all oppressed people, laying a foundation for a collective claim of liberation and beauty.
WHAT WE DO:
Our goals are to:
Promote leadership opportunities for people with disabilities within our communities and within the broader social justice movement.
Provide a supportive and politically engaged space for both emerging and established artists with disabilities to develop and present compelling works to a broad audience.
Develop and present strong artistic work that explores sexuality and the non-normative body, integrating the full and multi-dimensional experiences of disabled artists who are also people of color and LGBTIQ, in order to represent all of our communities and challenge dominant misperceptions about people with disabilities.
WE DO THIS BY:
Offering political education workshops for community based organizations and other organizations that share our commitment to social justice principles as a means of integrating analysis and action around disability, race, gender, and sexuality.
Presenting multidisciplinary performances (video, poetry, spoken word, music, drama, and dance) by people with disabilities for broad audiences in the San Francisco Bay Area and elsewhere.
Organizing performance workshops for community members with and without disabilities.
For this week’s creative writing post, I chose to showcase the Sin’s Invalid project as a resource of creativeness and artistry that is all centered on sick and disabled queers and or trans people of color. I remember finding excerpts of this on Youtube and feeling intrigued and wondrous and contemplative of what it means to be rethink queer intimacy and queer sexual desire through a lens of disability, both for myself and for this blog space. I thought of how, especially in my time here at UCSD, how queer spaces are always sexually charged regardless of explicit or implicit statement and how that sexual charge makes for determining almost immediately who is fuckable and who is not, who is weird and who is not, who is worthy of intimacy and who is not, who is worthy and who is not. I know its in binaries, but its also real (?).

in the enabled world, it is not generally acknowledged that tasks and activities consist of steps, each with their own elements of movement, thought, body position, and sensory data.
an example: I just cleaned my sink. I haven’t done it in a while because I was keeping the supplies on a low shelf in a cabinet. the step of bending over and opening the low sticky doors made the task inaccessible in my recent state. so after I cleaned the sink today, I put the supplies in a bucket under the sink so I could eliminate one step from the task. I know I will keep my bathroom cleaner because I took this step.
life is a series of these kinds of moments for me and for many disabled people. when someone assumes you can “just” do something it is usually based on a series of assumptions about the fullness of what is actually being discussed. these assumptions are usually unconscious and rooted in the ableist concept of a normal body & mind and its capabilities.
