A portrayal of geeks
The more I grow sympathetic to The Eltingville Club comics, the more I feel it does get aspects of geek culture right. But not in ways people would expect or even like, especially when it comes to racism and characters having sexual fantasies of sorts. I believe the real differences between The Eltingville Club and The Big Bang Theory is that the latter tries to get geek culture, but couldn't get a handle on it.
The Eltingville Club gets geek culture but in ways people don't immediately understand or experience, be it one of the characters having sexual fantasies of their favourite franchises or another one of them doing porn parodies of well-known films. Trust me, this is a thing. There are porn parodies of things like Spongebob Squarepants as done by actual porn productions, geeks themselves sexualise the things they like.
I could've been guilty of this before, as well as the immature rantings at some point. But I think the way The Eltingville Club portrays geek culture, especially as shown in the comics, is partly why it never got a real animated series. That's other than the pilot, which has spawned memetic dubs in the Hispanophone side of the Internet. The Big Bang Theory, by contrast, seems more sanitised.
But this involves smoothing over the rough edges geek culture has, including the seamier side of things like porn and so on. One would only wonder why TBBT succeeded, whilst Eltingville never got a proper series of any sort.

Gambling Lady (Archie Mayo, 1934) Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Pat O'Brien, C. Aubrey Smith, Claire Dodd, Robert Barrat, Arthur Vinton, Phillip Reed, Philip Faversham, Robert Elliott, Ferdinand Gottschalk, Willard Robertson, Huey White. Screenplay: Ralph Block, Doris Malloy. Cinematography: George Barnes. Art direction: Anton Grot. Film editing: Harold McLernon. Music: Bernhard Kaun. Costume design: Orry-Kelly. Barbara Stanwyck is invariably the best reason to watch any of her movies, and never more so than in Gambling Lady. Oh, her supporting cast is just fine: Joel McCrea is her reliable leading man and Claire Dodd makes the most of her rich-bitch foe. And the story, though familiar enough in its outlines and predictable enough in its resolution, keeps your attention, partly because the Production Code hadn't yet put a choke hold on depictions of the seamier side of life. Stanwyck plays Jennifer "Lady" Lee, an honest woman in a shady milieu: She's a professional gambler who refuses to cheat. It's a familiar Stanwyck character: tough but vulnerable, and she gets many chances to show both sides throughout the film. Her best moment, perhaps, comes at the film's climax, when the rich bitch triumphs, forcing Lady to lie to save McCrea's character, the wealthy Garry Madison, whom Lady has married, from jail. So we get Stanwyck putting on a façade of cynical laughter as she pretends she has never really loved Madison but was just in it for the money. We who know the truth can see the tears welling up inside Lady, but Stanwyck successfully keeps up the front before she makes her exit and collapses in grief. This is screen acting at its best, so that even if the plotting is contrived and the situation trite, Stanwyck wins us over, making more of the scene, in fact of the whole movie, than it really deserves.

Yeah :\ I guess it could be argued that he changed over time, possibly from his drug use and getting involved in even seamier activities, but it kind of negates the point of Morrison's principled thug and makes him a very different character.

Don't Breathe
Tumblr media
Fede Alvarez’ DON’T BREATHE (2011, Tubi) is obviously well made and has a solid cast, but there’s an ugliness about it that’s hard to swallow. And though Alverez wanted to make a horror film without the supernatural elements of his earlier EVIL DEAD (2013) remake, it loses credibility with three principals who keep bouncing back from what should be death like a bunch of Eveready bunnies.
This is a home invasion film from the invaders’ viewpoint. Alex (Dylan Minnette) helps his friends Rocky (Jane Levy) and Money (Daniel Zovatto) break into homes where they only steal merchandise and keep the haul below $10,000, the dividing line between petty theft and grand larceny. Levy does it to get herself and her younger sister out of an abusive family situation. Minnette does it because he has a crush on Levy. And Zovatto does it because he’s angry (the film throws a few ideas about class at the wall, but they don’t stick). They hear of a blind man (Stephen Lang) sitting on a mountain of cash in an otherwise deserted neighborhood and decide to break their rules so Levy and Zovatto can run off to California, What they don’t reckon.with is that the blind man is a Gulf War veteran with major combat skills and a few secrets he doesn’t want getting out. This leads to a series of chases, often in the dark, some very suspenseful and some ludicrous.
Part of the ugliness is from the setting. Cinematographer Pedro Luque can’t exactly shoot the seamier sides of Detroit in candy box colors. But it’s also inherent in the plot. The film treats a blind man as a monster while putting our sympathies with the two delinquents who didn’t think to bring a gun to a home invasion. When people keep getting taken out and bouncing back, it devolves into THE PERILS OF PAULINE with post-modern pretensions. I would appear to be in the minority. The film got great reviews and brought in enough at the box office to launch a franchise. At least that will keep the surviving actors, who do good work here and have done even better elsewhere, paying their bills. I should note that Detroit is mostly played by Hungary, and it sure warms the cockles of my heart to know the filmmakers saved lots of money by supporting a corrupt, homophobic dictatorship.

Olivia Bee
Olivia Bee or Boles is an American Photographer from Oregan. She was born in 1994 on April 5th making her 28. Her works is focused on portraits and frequently showcase celebrities like Kesha, Die Antwood, Katy Perry, Keke Palmer and many more. Her colours are can vary but in the pieces above its mostly warm yellows or golds with a cool toned background or elements. She also uses shutter speed incredibly well to create blurred/blurry elements of 'fuzzy' or haze lighting. "She is intrigued by the beauty of everyday life and how the beauty of memories (real or imagined) touches us." is a description from her website (http://oliviabee.com/contact/). Her composition changes between images but the main person/people is always the focus. At the young age of 14 her photography was used in a converse campaign. Her work was also used in Levi, Adidas, Nike and many more. "In 2011 she cited Ryan McGinley, Annie Leibovitz and Nan Goldin as influences, and attributed her inspiration to her younger brother, mother and father's musical and artistic talents." (wikipedia) "Nan Goldin is a major influence, but while Goldin's photographs portrayed the seamier side of sex and drugs and rock'n'roll, Bee finds a dreamlike, innocent colour in her friends' gently dissolute experimentation."(https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/feb/24/olivia-bee-interview-photographer-hermes). She has many influences that helped her become the photographer/director that she is now. She has said most of her work is done using a "Olympus OM-1 or OM-10" but some newer accounts say a "Contax T2 and G2", she likes these for the quality of their film. She uses nice bright lighting to keep her portraits in the limelight but in some of her personal photographs of herself and company she uses regular daylight. Olivia starred in a short film by Adam Beck and Paul Johnston called "A Kid From Somewhere: Olivia Bee" about her "photographic process". she also directed the music video for Olivia Rodrigo's song "Traitor" and Ingrid Address's music video for "Feel like this". I really enjoy the life she puts in all of her photography, she adds her own personal flair with the shutter speed effects or the lighting while keeping the models aesthetic untouched. Her photography seems very in the moment and not forces or posed and I like the sense of fluidity in these images.

Track 29 (Nicolas Roeg, 1988) Cast: Theresa Russell, Gary Oldman, Christopher Lloyd, Colleen Camp, Sandra Bernhard, Seymour Cassel, Leon Rippy. Screenplay: Dennis Potter. Cinematography: Alex Thomson. Production design: David Brockhurst, Curtis A. Schnell. Film editing: Tony Lawson. Music: Stanley Myers. With directors like Luis Buñuel and David Lynch, whose films regularly stray along the boundaries between logic and the irrational, between the waking world and dreams, between sanity and madness, you can always sense a central consciousness, a coherent vision, holding the film together. This isn't the case with Nicolas Roeg's Track 29, which falls apart as it drifts into weirdness for weirdness's sake. It centers on Linda, a neglected housewife, whose physician husband, Henry, spends most of his free time in the attic playing with his model trains, and at work is having an affair with his nurse, who spanks him while wearing rubber gloves. The doctor and nurse are played by one of the odder couples ever to be seen in a movie, Christopher Lloyd and Sandra Bernhard. One day, when Linda (Theresa Russell) is having lunch with her friend Arlanda (Colleen Camp), they're joined by a young man named Martin (Gary Oldman), whom we see at the start of the film hitchhiking along a country road and later being picked up by a trucker (Leon Rippy). Martin creepily admires the trucker's "Mom" tattoo, which sets us up for the even creepier assertion that he will make to Linda that he's really the son she gave up for adoption at birth. That Oldman and Russell are almost the same age should clue you in to the fact that nothing is going to make conventional sense in Track 29. Martin arouses more than maternal passion in Linda, but he may not even exist: Although Arlanda sees him in the cafe where he makes his acquaintance with Linda, in a later restaurant scene in which Martin plays on Linda's erotic obsession, we cut from the table where they're sitting to behind the bar and share the point of view of a waiter and bartender who see her sitting alone. Oh, there's much more, including a scene in which Henry addresses the attendees at a model train collectors' convention and stirs them to a frenzy with his speech. But you get the point: Track 29 is mostly an elaborate psychosexual fantasy, but it lacks a central vision to hold it together or carry it to any kind of satisfactory conclusion. It's never daring enough to explore sexual frustration and obsession in the many imaginative ways Buñuel does in Belle de Jour (1967). It could pass as satire if there were any larger point to its fleeting moments of insight or surprise, the way Lynch's Blue Velvet, made two years earlier, uncovered the seamier side of Reagan-era complacency. As it is, it's just, well, weird.

READING - ‘COLLAGE -THE UNMONUMENTAL PICTURE’ :
I was lead to this book through reading ‘Unmomumental’, which focuses on materiality sculpture, but I have started to become more interested in collage, circling back to the domestic, femmage, practices.... thinking of the materiality of my work and my practice as a textile collage of sorts.....
Collage - The Unmonumental Picture’
New Museum Merrel
Preface by Lisa Phillips
Essays by Richard Flood, Laura Hopman, and Massimiloano Gioni.
Tumblr media
Notes/Quotes:
Accompanies the second chapter of the New Museum’s inaugural exhinbition Unmonumental
“Collage involves the simplest of acts, the pasting of torn or cut paper. It is humble and democratic in that anyone can do it.”
Tear Me Apart, One Letter at a Time- Richard Flood
“Collage has been kicking around for centuries. It has most often fallen into the category of anecdotal, perhaps as a sentimental billet-doux or maidenly remembrance,”
“In the early twentieth century, collage found a new life as something torn and cut from newspapers, magazines, cigarette packages…….the results were no less anecdotal, but the subject matter (whether abstract or figurative) became elevated as it served to liberate compositional formats (Picasso) and political realities (John Heartfield) 8.
“…collage gradually became identified with such artistic practices as cubism, Dada, and surrealism……..”
“…anyone can make it and most do” 8
“The future of collage seems secure. Newspapers and Web sites are filled with juxtaposing and extreme abutments that simmer with tension.” 8
Collage Now: The Seamier Side - Laura Hoptman
“Although it is not an intrinsic characteristic, collage has traditionally been the conduit through which elements of real life - … have interest into the language of contemporary art…” 9
“Since its very origin, collage has appeared as an art of crisis that has entertained a deep relationship with traumas and violations…” 12
“As it feeds odd magazines, television, and the Internet, in fact, contemporary collage reveals a complicated relationship with the realm of desire…” 13
“The representation of sex is almost a genre unto itself in the history of collage. Its origins are to be found in the morbidity of surrealist imagery, which, in turn, was infused with new energy and relevance by the countercultural and feminist movements of the sixties and seventies.” - 14
“..Many younger artists are connections to this eccentric legacy: Christian Holster’s work, for example, with it’s combination of decorative patterns and graphic love scenes, re-appropriates the excessive palette of psychedelia and recharges it with a new visor borrowed from today’s gay club culture…”15

Love Jacked (2018)
Tumblr media
What’s worse than paying to see a bad comedy like Love Jacked? Being alone in the theater with the one person who will laugh at ANY joke, no matter how tired, predictable or lame.
While vacationing in Africa, aspiring artist Maya (Amber Stevens West) meets Mtumbie (Demetrius Grosse). When he proposes after just three weeks, she says yes, much to the distraught of her overbearing father (Keith David). Then, Maya catches Mtumbie cheating on her. Heartbroken, she returns home but is determined not to let her father’s predictions about the relationship not lasting come true. Enter pool hustler Tyrell (Lyric Bent) who agrees to pretend to be her fiancé while hiding from his ex-partner in crime, Malcolm (Shamier Anderson).
You’re right. We have seen this scenario before… a thousand times… on TV! At least there, it concluded itself within a half hour. This picture lasts over and 100 minutes - those special kind of minutes who feel like hours on their own. This plot is so predictable you could set your watch to it, assuming it converts hours to “bad movie time”. The jokes are so limp they wriggle a bit before dying. You’d laugh at the pathetic effort, except the lineup of similar jokes stretches past the horizon. There’s nothing funny about an endurance test like this one unless you were my neighbor. He must’ve just escaped from a coma, or some kind dungeon because he never stopped chuckling! Even he must’ve known how cookie-cutter this is, as at one point, he got up to go to the washroom for at least five minutes (again, “bad movie time”; it might’ve been more, or less). When he returned, he didn’t skip a beat. He resumed laughing IMMEDIATELY, having to spend 0 seconds catching up to the thin plot.
The only surprises come when Love Jacked doesn’t indulge in cliches, which isn’t very often. This Canadian film is the kind of thing that would’ve been done in the U.S. 20 years ago and would’ve still been called embarrassing back then. The only amusement I got came from taking a step back and examining it. This farce is kicked off by a woman who hates her father so much she’d rather pretend to have a fake marriage than admit he was right. Paying for a wedding, getting her relatives invested in the relationship, going through with fake Mtumbie’s funeral, and then lying for the rest of her life… for what?
To be fair, Love Jacked is so forgettable it isn’t worthy of hatred. It sucks and you know it sucks from scene one. I doubt even the memories of sitting next to that hyena are going to stick with me down the line. If you decide to sit through it, however, there are a selection of bloopers which play during the end credits. (Theatrical version on the big screen, December 9, 2018)
