Just a few more days until @nightshadetattoo books open up! Did you know Nightshade® started from the tattoo side of our business and the name actually came about because the tattooist is colorblind? Nightshade® Tattoo has been established in Seattle for over ten years now! It wasn’t until 2019 we added the plant shop side and the name began to have two meanings. Check out his work and get those ideas ready for October 1st! (at Nightshade Seattle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjDs_VALXGH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Biography
Asher and Juniper was at one of their relatives Christmas eve party in Phoenix, Arizona when Juni’s water broke, they all got excited that it was going to be either a Christmas eve or a Christmas baby. At the strike of midnight on December 25, Asher and Juniper Storm welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world, they named her Phoenix Akira Storm. They had a Christmas baby and she was definitely the best present they could ask for, that was honestly was their favorite Christmas for sure.
They didn’t even mind that they had to spend Christmas day in the hospital, they made the best of it and their family even decided to wait til they were able to leave to open presents. They ended up opening presents on New Years Eve that year, not that anyone minded it because they understood quite well and plus they all had gotten distracted with the new baby. They spent til the 14th of January in Phoenix with Asher’s parents then they spent rest of January with Juniper’s parents in Portland, Oregon.
When February 1st rolled around, the young couple made their way home to Seattle, Washington. Despite them no longer going to have help with raising Phoenix, they were thrilled to finally be home. In their honest opinion everything was just perfect and they were completely happy, their daughter was the apple of their eye and they didn’t need anything else but each other. At the age of three, her parents asked her what she wanted for her birthday and Phoenix asked her parents for a baby. At first they thought she meant a baby doll but when she said she wanted a baby like uncle Carson and auntie Sydney has, it surprised them but they kept it in mind. Shortly after she turned four, her parents welcomed a son into the mix - naming him Rhys Carter Storm. And she was happier than she could imagined since now she had a full time playmate, her parents were just happy that both of their kids were healthy and happy as can be.
At the age of six, she started to take an interest in art. It ranged from make up and nail art to tattoo art, she definitely enjoyed drawing. She’d making all sorts of pictures for all of her family, she made so much art the her family started making a scrap book of it just so they could look back on how far she processed over the years and to keep the memories. She loved going hiking, camping, sailing, and fishing with her father, however she didn’t like watching her father gut the fish since she found it disgusting. She quite enjoyed going swimming, ice skating, shopping, and to the movies with her mother. And she absolutely loved to play with her younger brother, even though sometimes he could annoy her. She also did like going to work with her father who was a marine biologist, he also owed a nightclub while her mother was a journalist and forensic scientist. She was quite interested in both of her parents careers, she wanted to take after them one day but she also wanted to do something art related. She was torn but her parents told her that she was still young and she had time to figure it out, til then she can just enjoy being a kid while she could.
Again everything was perfect til Phoenix was seven, at the age of seven her mother was diagnosed with Leukemia. She tried to be tough for her brother and mother but seeing her mother in so much pain broke her heart, she just couldn’t be strong when she was terrified of losing her mother. Her father did all he could do to cheer up his children, all while he tried to remain strong for his wife and children. It was hard but he managed to pull through, only breaking down when he was alone. Her father was extremely glad that his twin brother lived in Spokane and his twin sister lived in Bainbridge Island, especially during the times they came to stay for awhile to help him with the kids or when the kids would go stay with them for a bit. Phoenix and Rhys wasn’t happy about leaving their mother’s side but Phoenix understood why, unlike Rhys who was a bit too young to understand at the time.
When Phoenix was nine, her mother passed away due to complications with her Leukemia. It was the worst possible thing that could have happened to her, for a couple of weeks afterwards she didn’t want to do anything but cry. She was so angry at the world, so angry with god for taking her mother away from them. She was so angry that she stopped doing what she loved to do, she swore she would never be happy again. It took a month and a half before she stopped being so angry, but she was still grieving over her mothers death. Her father was worried about his children, especially her but his mother told him that it would be alright eventually. After her mother’s funeral, they went and stayed with their grandparents for awhile so their father could have help for a bit. Which they stayed in Portland til mid July, after that they went and stayed with their aunt in Bainbridge Island, WA so their father could return to work and still have help with raising them.
It wasn’t til Phoenix was ten that they finally moved back to Seattle, her father was ready to try raising them on his own. He was thankful for all the support he had and would continue to have, and if he needed anything they all said all he had to do is pick up the phone and give them a call then they’d be there as soon as they could. Phoenix was indeed lucky to have such an amazing family, she honestly hoped she wouldn’t lose any of them for awhile. She would say at all but she knew that death was just a normal part of life and she just had to accept it, it would hurt but it would be okay eventually. Plus even though they’d be out of sight, they’d never truly leave her. Ever since she moved back to Seattle, she missed seeing her friends she made every day but she knew that it wasn’t such a long drive if she ever wanted to visit them or they wanted to visit her. She eventually started doing the things she loved again, which made her father happy to see that his baby girl was finally enjoying life again.
Phoenix was twelve when her father started dating again, at first it made her upset because she thought her father has forgotten and was trying to replace her mother. She couldn’t help but to think how could he possibly do that to her? Didn’t he love her anymore? She started acting out due to it but when her father finally sat her down and had a talk with her, she finally understood everything that she needed to. And then it was completely weird since her father was now dating a male, she though maybe no other female would be enough for him after her mother. That thought alone made her smile, but at the end of the day she didn’t care who her father was seeing, just as long as he was happy.
At first she didn’t get along with her father’s boyfriend’s son, but Rhys had hit it off pretty well with him - she was sorta jealous but she figured it was because they were closer in age. Despite how much she couldn’t tolerate Ryker, she knew that Mateo made her father super happy so she tried her hardest to get along with him. When the clock his midnight on New Years day when she was thirteen, her father had gotten engaged to his boyfriend. It didn’t take long after that for Ryker and Mateo to move in with them, it was hectic at first but they eventually got used to it and by the end of July, she officially had a stepfather and stepbrother.
After that Ryker and her finally became close, but it was obvious that Rhys and Ryker were practically inseparable. However when they weren’t with their friends, the three of them could always be seen together doing something. It was like that til she turned sixteen, then she started spending more time with her new best friends; Jasper and Leilani but mostly Jasper. When she couldn’t hang with one of them, then she’d spend time with one of her other friends or her siblings. When Phoenix turned fifteen, she had began taking art classes during school and extra classes outside of school, her love for art kept increasing over the years and she knew that she wanted to something art related when she finally high school and college.
Phoenix had just finished high school, when her father announced he was getting an divorce. It came as such a shock to her at first but with all the fights they were having lately, she came to realize it was just a matter of time. The only thing that sucked about it was that she was practically losing another parent and a sibling, it broke her heart but not as bad as it broke Rhys heart to lose Ryker because they were best friends. She tried to make them both feel better by telling Rhys and Ryker that they’d still be best friends and be able to see one another, it helped some til the day came when they found out Ryker was moving away and it would probably be the last time they saw him. She had to spend that whole night comforting her brother, she knew how hard it was to have your best move away and not knowing if you’d ever see them again. It was painful so she felt his pain, their father apologized for the millionth time since he announced the divorce since the last thing he wanted was for his kids to be unhappy but things just happen beyond anyone’s control. Both of them knew that by now, they also knew it would eventually be okay - just not right away.
Once Phoenix turned nineteen, she decided to go to college for a few things but the arts being the main subject. She didn’t care if she spent longer in college just as long as she studied something that intrigued her, at first she was torn on what college to go to because she didn’t want to go too far away from her family but she wanted the best, eventually she decided to go to college in California. At least that way she wouldn’t be too far away from home and at one of the best colleges out there, she ended up doing six years of college but that’s alright because she wanted to be the best in what she was planning on doing. After she finished college she finally moved back home, though it was a bit different since her baby brother decided to go to college in Salt Lake City but she understood why, he was hoping that he’d run into Ryker once again. She couldn’t blame him since she knew how much he missed him, hell she missed him too. She could only hope that he was alright and that life had treated him well, just like she hoped her brother was finally reunited with his best friend.
It didn’t take her long after she gotten home for her to start doing what she loved to do as a career, even though she didn’t ask for his help, he helped her start her own business. She named her business Jupiter's Ink Stars as a dedication to her mother, plus since its basically a place she does make up, nails, and tattoos - it worked well for a name or at least she thought so. As a thank you for the help, she helped him out in his nightclub as a bartender. However he made her promise to focus more on her career as an artist than a bartender, which of course she promised and she kept that promise but it didn’t stop her from helping out on the weekends. She honestly hopes that she is making her mother proud of the woman she had became since that’s all she wants to do is make her parents proud of her. But he father tells her every time he sees her that her mother would be so proud of her, just let he is. So in the end she guessed that she was doing something right.

**************************************************************************************
Jimin owed a tattoo parlor in downtown Seattle. Everyone knows that he’s a werewolf because he’s not the only one. Some people are used to Werewolves roaming the street during the day and night, others are against it but Jimin could care less he considers himself a good guy.
And so fuck it if others think differently, what he is shouldn’t affect his work.
Jimin is finishing up with his 7th client when the bell rang signaling that a customer before he could say a word a strong scent of lavender and honey hits his nose.
“Hello?” A small voice yells out. “Give me a second!” Jimin yells out as he finishes the tattoo wiping away the blood and throwing the tissue away.
“Come pay upfront, Jackson,” Jimin says after quickly wrapping the tattoo.
Jackson follows behind Jimin and he walks out front to see You, admiring his work, “I will be right with you in a second.” His says hearing you mumble out an‘ okay.’
“Thanks, Jimin, the boys and I are having a party you should come by.” Jackson offered as Jimin gave him his Change.
“Jackson you know I got clients. But I’ll try.” Jimin says as he sees you looking at other drawings on the wall.
“Just come back in a week or so for some pictures.” Jimin says and Jackson gives him a quick nod before he leaves.
Now it was just you and him. Your scent cause a ruckus in Jimin’s head.
“What would you like?” Jimin spoke as he steps closer to you. “I-I was wondering if I could get that.” Jimin watches as you pointed at a drawing that had roses on the waist going down to the hip bone.
“You sure?” Jimin asked taking his hands out of his pockets to take the drawing down.
“Yes I’m Sure, why you ask?” You said turning to face him.
“Well The hip hurts like hell for most.” Jimin explained.
“Really?” You spoke shocked as you followed him towards the back.
“Yeah but after awhile it goes away.” Jimin spoke before signaling for you to sit on the table.
“Okay I’m going to need you to tuck your shirt into your bra and move your pants away from your hip.” Jimin says turning his back away from you.
You follow what he says as he steps out of the room.
You remove your pants and sat back down waiting quietly. Jimin came back to the room your scent stronger than ever.
He cleared his throat and you looked at him. “You can layback and I will place the sheet on you, an- and you can adjust it if you like.” Jimin says bring the paper toward your skin.
He places it down causing you to suck in a breath. He moves your underwear a little down to place the rest of the paper on your hip. “Sorry it’s a bit cold.” Jimin said breaking the silence. “N-No it’s fine.” I said as he pulls the paper off.
You looked down and you couldn’t peel your eyes away from the roses. “You like it?” He says raising a brow.
“Yeah.” You squealed causing him to laugh. “Let's get started, yeah?” Jimin says getting the needle.
Your only 13 minutes in and felt like forever pain. But for Jimin your scent is only getting worse, the only thing he can think of is making you scream his name.
His thoughts are only you, something like this NEVER happened to Jimin.
“How long have you been doing this?” You voice interrupted his thoughts.
“Oh ummm, about 4 years.” Jimin says as he wiped away the blood.
“Okay, I have a quick question.” You spoke and Jimin hummed in response.
“Is it hard… being different?” You spoke causing Jimin to stop.
“I’m sorry if I upset you!” You began but Jimin laughs.
“No you didn’t upset me, it’s just not a lot of people ask that question.” Jimin says before continuing.
“And yeah it is hard, full moon, controlling my temper and my pack.” Jimin spoke.
“Your pack?” Your brow furrowed with curiosity.
“Yeah I’m an alpha, I do a great job hiding it don’t I?” Jimin chuckled at your expression.
“Where’s you pack?” You spoke biting your lip as he goes over your hip bone.
“Their at our apartment. Probably fucking something up.” Jimin huffed as he thought of Taehyung and Jungkook bickering about a stupid video game.
“Do you do piercings?” You said changing the subject after noticing Jimin mood change.
“Yeah, thinking about getting one?” He said taking a quick glance at you.
“No not today umm.” You realize you don’t know his name.
“Jimin.”
“Jimin.” You repeated causing Jimin to low growl, which he was thankful you didn’t hear.
“What's your name?” Jimin says keeping the conversation going.
“Oh it’s _____.” You introduce.
Jimin kept the conversation flowing until he was wrapping up your tattoo.
“Make sure to put the ointment on an rewrap it once you take ur shower.” Jimin instructed and you pulled your pants on.
“Okay.” You spoke pulling your shirt down. Jimin leads you back to the front.
“Cash or card?” Jimin says going behind the counter typing on the tablet.
“Card.” You said handing him your card.
“Okay your set, in a week or so come back so I can update the pictures.” Jimins spoke handing you your card along with his business card.
“Sure thing Jimin, see you next week.” You spoke. Once you left Jimin collapsed on the ground, letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
Your scent was killing him, so much he can’t even think. Jimin quickly went to the back and began pouring bleach on other cleaning materials to get rid of your scent.
“Jimin I brought- Oh my god who did you murder?” Jin said cover his nose as he was walking in the back.
“Can you smell it?” Jimin says scattering around cleaning everything.
“I can smell the bleach and.. and lavender.” Jin said sitting in Jimin seat watching his leader scatter around like a psychopath.
Jimin smelt his shirt and let out a loud growl before taking it off.
“So who’s the girl?” Jin said causing Jimin to stop his tracks.
“The girl is a new client I dealt with today, nothing new.” Jimin grumbled.
“Yeah sure nothing new, it is something new if she got you pouring bleach all over the place.” Jin says and Jimin slides down the wall.
Jin tossed Jimin’s lunch “Tell me.” Jin said as Jimin tastes out his lunch.
“Don’t say a damn word.” Jimin snarled and Jin holds up his hands, In surrender.
“Her name is ______ she’s beautiful, she’s really sweet and I literally don’t know she just driving me crazy her scent is stronger than anyone else before.” Jimin spoke before taking a big bite out of his sandwich.
“Jimin your clueless aren’t you?” Jin said smiling. Causing Jimin to raise and eyebrow.
“What”
“You might’ve found the one, isn’t that what everyone else says these days.”
“Jin goodbye.”

Already pandemic memorial tattoos are on the rise: sound waves from the last voicemail before undergoing COVID-19 complications; a masked nurse like a god; “I survived a global pandemic and I just got this stupid tattoo.” But the coronavirus also changed how we’re getting tattooed in less obvious ways. A year of trauma has imprinted on us thoughts of solidarity and empathy, and shops and studios flooding in as customers – artists across America with doubling of inquiries and bookings compared to the summer of 2019 – have been a trauma-informed one. The approach is taking hold.
The country’s 20,000 tattoo shops close their doors for months, some all year. With the reopening, they are making up for lost income and postponed appointments. Clinical counselor and trauma therapist Jordan Pickel wasn’t surprised to hear that the Instagram bios of many tattoo artists read “Books Closed” for another reason. Not only did we experience a pandemic, but the global death toll continues to rise. Survivors’ guilt and surrounding anxiety are feelings that settle in the body and stay there, even if we don’t notice them. Covering the body with symbols to see is a form of resistance and an act of recovery after a crisis.
“When something traumatic happens, it can shatter a person’s sense of security or stability, the idea that the world is a just place. Tattoos communicate ‘I have changed’ or ‘my worldview has changed,'” ‘” says Jordan. “Healing from trauma is multi-layered and self-determined, which means you get to decide what your healing process looks like. Getting a tattoo can totally play a role in emotional transformation.”

“I protect myself by decorating myself. It’s armor,” says Alicia Chung, a 24-year-old art student and accountability facilitator in Vancouver, Canada. Since restrictions were eased last fall, he’s been getting new inks almost every week, often occupied by his growing network of friends in private tattoo studios who run a rotary machine. A lot of his pieces make no sense, and he thinks he might as well be stupid — a spider on his elbow, a mud gun with a halo, a sexy peanut, “fast and furious” above the crotch — but the point is Alicia Chosen them. “It’s my weird, twisted way of gaining autonomy.”
The sudden and complete absence of autonomy is the hallmark of the pandemic era. This is at the root of complaints from anti-mascars and anti-vaxxers. This seemed to be the central conflict – even more powerful than the disease – of the quarantine essays written from vacation homes. Our newfound autonomy in a now-reopened society is stressing us out, creating FOMO in some and a fear of being left out in others. Emphasis on self-determination has always been a reason for getting tattoos, but in the post-pandemic scenario it has taken on new meaning.
“When my studio reopened in August, I was worried that people wouldn’t come,” says Ocean Sing, an artist based in Brooklyn, New York. “But more people wanted tattoos than before the pandemic. I think there was a zest for practicing agency, and I ended up getting tattooed on a lot of designs that people said they wanted for years. “
Psychologically, periods of separation and pause can act as a value reset. “Many of us had never faced the reality of ‘life is short,’ which leads to ‘why not’ decisions,” Jordan explains. For those who had money left over from government stimulus checks after paying rent and debt, getting a tattoo was something exciting.
Part of why Alicia has been under the needle so often is that the restaurant they work at has temporarily closed, the school has gone virtual and parties have been cancelled. They had too much time and too little socialization. “That’s when I can take a little rest or allow myself to rest,” he says. “It got to a point where I didn’t mind spending the money to get them all” [tattoos] Because I’m paying for those four hours to be on the table and get professional service. We become intimate and vulnerable but it maintains this customer relationship because I am paying for their trust and interaction. And the isolated pain of a billion vibrations.”
As social beings, we have suffered the loss of non-pod contact. Ocean could still sketch in lockdown if he had the energy, but couldn’t tell Miyazaki to chat with a stranger about movies while by the bathroom. spirited Away on their back. (“I prefer customs these days because they’re so cooperative,” he explains.) We remembered our third-tier friends, the people we laid eyes on the subway from and the professionals we called expertise. was paid instead.

“Tattoos are an experience you’ll never forget,” says Detroit artist and shop owner Chrissy the Butcher, who’s engaged anytime in her 13-year career. “You’re nervous, the adrenaline rushing. People want that feeling again. i have designed [my shop] So that it’s so quiet, people can bring their friends… there’s a vibe to it.”
According to Jordan, physical intimacy is an important part of restoration even after trauma. “Being around other people is a way that we co-regulate, which means our bodies go back into a sense of groundedness and security. It’s not something we really do on our own. ” For artists who see themselves as healers, this understanding comes first.
Jude Le Tronick specializes in flora and fauna – as nature was “a major healer” in his life – and does freehand blackwork exclusively from private studios established in Seattle. “Freehanding is for me and for the client. I think it’s a respectful process to be fully present.” Judd, which provides free scar cover-up tattoo services to survivors of domestic or sexual violence, believes that tattooists are not therapists, but still have stories of inner pain emanating from their clients. There should be room for
In Tamara Santibanez’s phenomenal manifesto/guidebook/love letter Could this be magic? tattooing as emancipation, published in March and developed from discussion groups conducted during the pandemic, they claim that a tattoo shop has the potential to be a significant site of community building and change. Historically, that ability has been undermined by a masculine culture lacking tenderness. There’s a dispute between street shops and DIY private studios, between artists asking you for consent to shave and between artists who photograph your lower back while you’re oblivious. Lily, 20, knew that for a memorial tattoo of her cousin who died by suicide during the quarantine, she wanted to patronize a queer-led shop and get a tattoo done by a non-male artist. “When I was doing this I didn’t have to worry about anyone maybe attacking me,” she says.
We are in a unique moment of systemic change and the impact of the pandemic on the future of tattoo spaces is beginning to show. For many, this is taking a trauma-informed direction; For others, a selfish fight-or-flight. Pat Fish has been tattooing for 37 years, and she estimates that the dozen tattoo studios around the Santa Barbara Valley have shrunk to six since Covid hit. “I think everyone else is advertising on Craigslist that they’ll be visiting a house, a completely unwell condition. The major effect of the pandemic is that people realized ‘I’m going to have to inspect me once a year. Why should I pay $380 to the health department?’ They are not taking their responsibility as an agent of change seriously.”
“The old thing was you were grassroots because you want someone randomly walking to hear the sound, buzzzz, and to intrigue in the door,” Pat continues. “Now I think, ‘I don’t want you to move, who are you?’ If I’m going to have face-to-face contact with people, let it be that.
A safe space requires acknowledging the dynamic force between the tattooer and the client. When Ocean holds a stencil, for example, they tell the client it’s not a big deal to move or replace, they won’t go crazy. “When I was getting my first tattoo, I was afraid to ask for what I wanted. Even if you’re not traumatized, it’s a scary thing to be in a situation where a stranger might notice your presence. Changes forever.”
Getting a tattoo has always been scary for some people. Jade Bell is a Los Angeles tattoo artist and illustrator who grew up seeing her mother being deprived of shops for being a black woman. When they found an aspiring artist, they weren’t necessarily trained appropriately. “I literally saw a girl give my mom a keloid scar because she didn’t know how to work with darker skin tones,” Jade says.
America’s “plague years” included one of the largest protest movements in the country’s history, making it impossible to close the ongoing racial count. This resonated throughout the tattoo community, as Instagram infographics circulated resources for inking various skin pigments and white artists were singled out for a culturally appropriation flash.

“People started to realize they had no black art [tattoo] collection,” says Jade. “I asked my partner, ‘Hey, can you name five Blacks’ [tattoo] artist’s?’ we could not. ‘What about five famous tattoo models who are black?’ We couldn’t think of anyone at all.”
Luckily Jade is a Virgo, so she was fearless at the idea of changing the culture herself. “I like to represent myself in the things I love. I had never seen black women drawn in the portrayal style that I see other women drawn all the time. I’m four-eyed black girls.” I am developing my universe.”
Chrissy the Butcher lives and works in Detroit, America’s largest black-majority city. Over the past year, she has seen ideas about race and society make their way onto the body. “Tattoos help people heal from generational trauma. It causes you to research the imagery presented by our ancestors. I see people getting African symbols with the turn of 2021, and I’m getting that tattoo. I’m building what I love and know, anything that relates to the black female form.”
A common counterargument is ‘Why remind yourself of your hardship on your body?’ “I’m thinking about it anyway,” says Kansas City physician Jesse Lee. “My trauma defines a lot of who I am and I was offended by it. Now I’m really happy [for it] Because I love who I am now.”
In February, Jesse got a bicep tattoo of a plant blooming from a can of tomatoes. For years, she pointed to her “nonsense childhood” without actually addressing it. When someone described her trauma to her as a jar of rotten tomatoes that gained more and more pressure over time, until the lid burst and the juices spilled everywhere, Jesse summed it up in a poem. Changed. After a one-year hiatus, in which she finally stuck with therapy and did things she wouldn’t allow herself to do as a fat woman – like roller skating, wearing crop tops, and considering her body a canvas – She was ready to make it a permanent reminder.
“People have experienced more trauma in the last five or so years than I think we have ever experienced collectively. Just by going to the Internet we are constantly digesting other people’s traumas,” Jesse says. A tattoo becomes a positive part of your story.”
It is beautiful to see collective grief metamorphose when we heal individually. “So much healing from trauma involves humor, at least for me,” Alicia says. “People ask me what I’ll think of my sexy Peanuts tattoo in 30 years. Maybe I look back and say to myself, ‘You could probably love yourself a little more, apparently it’s yours’ There was a way to compete. I think it’s nice to have a mark of remembrance for being a wrinkled old woman with a portrait made during a crazy time in the world.”
